New 2016-2017 Staff 6

A word from our Superintendent.... With 2016 coming to a close, the 2016-2017 school year is well underway! Every year is filled with challenges, opportunities, growth and new ways of doing things. When one pauses to look at the world we live in today, it is very clear that what we must do to prepare learners for the world of tomorrow, is far different than what we have done in the past. Preparing students in 21st Century schools is both exciting and daunting all at the same time. With any system, change over time is necessary to enable the system to remain current, relevant, effective, productive and efficient. As is the case in any system, there are always areas of strength tempered by areas requiring improvement. In the Belle Plaine Public Schools we have been examining practices and looking for areas we can improve our practice to ensure we are preparing our students for the world they will be entering. We are excited to build off the great foundation here in the Belle Plaine Public Schools by bolstering, refining, and expanding in these five areas: Individualized/Personalized Learning, Student Involvement in Activities & Programs, Academic Performance, Early Learning Initiatives, and Quality Instructional Practice. In each of the areas, we are constantly studying and evaluating to ensure we are meeting the needs of our learners to give them an advantage as they compete in a 21st Century world.

Thank you, Dr. Ryan Laager Superintendent

ECFE

Early Childhood Family Education

Belle Plaine ECFE Office 952-873-2415 x5 330 South Market Street, Belle Plaine Welcome to Early Childhood Family Education

Early years are learning years and family involvement makes a difference so Early Childhood Family Education wants to help provide these opportunities!

What can Early Childhood Family Education provide?

• ECFE provides educational opportunities! Our licensed teachers create age appropriate activities that use play based teaching to provide hands-on learning experiences for the children. We provide parents with ideas and strategies to carry learning into the home and begin to form a positive school-home partnership. Classes are at various times and meet weekly, monthly or just one day throughout the year to meet the demanding schedules of today’s parents. • ECFE promotes family involvement! Family involvement makes a difference in a child’s education and we create opportunities to make it easy for parents to get involved. Besides the classes and events, we also offer take home activity bags and a Parent Advisory Council that makes suggestions for programming. • ECFE shares community resource opportunities! We educate parents about the support networks, community resources and educational services that are available to them. We support parents by listening, providing options, supporting strong family communication and positive parenting as well as opportunities for friendships. • ECFE offers tuition assistance and sibling care! We have a sliding fee scale and sibling care for many of our classes! We won’t turn any early childhood family away and will offer child care for the children that do not meet age requirements for the class.

To learn more about ECFE go to www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us, “Like” us on Facebook or contact the ECFE office at (952) 873-2415 x5.

ECFE

Early Childhood Family Education Where is ECFE located?

We are located at Chatfield Elementary, 330 South Market Street, Belle Plaine. We are across the street from the Belle Plaine Jr/Sr High School.

What does a typical class look like?

Parent Child Time: Parents and children spend time creating, playing and talking in the learning stations created by your teacher. This cooperative time is spent with your children by guiding and encouraging them as they learn new skills. Circle Time: Everyone joins in for this large group activity. You will notice a regular pattern each week that includes interactive songs, stories and movement activities. Sometimes it might be a challenge for some at first, but with a little guidance from the teacher and your help modeling the desired behavior they will pick it up quickly. Parent Discussion: Discussion is led by a licensed staff whose role is to provide resources and lead the group towards helpful parenting discussions. During parent discussion time parents will have a chance to connect with other parents, learn about various resources and discuss a variety of topics that focus on parent child and family development. Teacher Time: While parents are at discussion time, children will have some independent play time in the classroom with other children and the teacher. This not only gives children a first “school” experience, but it will also be a way to address the separation issues. Children are under the care of the classroom teacher and a class assistant where social interaction and free play is the main focus.

How do I register for classes?

Early Childhood Developmental Screening: The early childhood years from birth to the start of kindergarten are an important time of rapid learning and growth. Early Childhood Screening is a free, quick and easy check of how your child is growing, developing and learning. Between the ages of 3 and 4, Early Childhood Screening can detect possible health or learning concerns, so that children can get help before they start school. At your child’s screening, a trained professional will play games with your child to check: * Vision * Hearing * Height and weight * Large and fine muscle skills * Thinking, language and communication skills * Social and emotional development * Immunization status All of the information from your child’s Early Childhood Developmental Screening is important to his/her success. After the screening, you will know how your child is growing, developing and learning. To schedule your child’s FREE Early Childhood Developmental Screening visit, www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us and click on Early Learning Services. Then click on Early Childhood Developmental Screening. Please read the information, fill out the scheduling form and then submit the scheduling form. If you have any questions, please contact Carolina Stiemke, Early Childhood Screening Coordinator at [email protected] or call at 952-378-2454.
