Community Education Spring 2017

Welcome Welcome to Winter 2017! What a joy it was for my family and I to experience our first holiday season in the Brainerd Lakes Area. It was a delight to meet so many students, families and community members at all the different concerts, performances and competitions. Now that we have turned the calendar to a new year, we at Brainerd Public Schools are transitioning to a new semester. Our students and staff are hard at work on the second half of the school year’s learning, growing and changing. I invite each of you to join us in this educational journey, whether it’s volunteering in a classroom, cheering for our Warrior teams, serving on a committee, or participating in one of the Community Education activities here. Your presence in and support of our schools is invaluable and so very appreciated. I wish you a season full of cozy sweaters, hot drinks and warm memory-making! Laine D. Larson Superintendent of Schools Brainerd Public Schools

Lear, meet, get inspired!

Welcome to the Brainerd Community Education winter guide!

There are three times of year in my job that I especially love: fall guide time, winter guide time and spring guide time. The office is a flurry of activity as staff are working with instructors and coaches to confirm all the details for all the activities. It is so fun for me to flip through the pages and see all the opportunities they have worked so hard to plan. An additional bonus is that I get a sneak peek at what I want to sign up for when registration opens! There are always so many activities that would interest some member of the Reynolds family. Our Instagram-loving teenagers would love Photography classes (p. 4) so they can get their selfies juuuust right. My husband the amatuer chef would be fascinated to know how to make Prairie Bay’s delicious bruschetta sampler (p. 6). The financial class for parents and grandparents is of particular interest to me after the embarrassment of riches our children were showered with over the holidays (p. 8). I also have my eye on the new Painting Barn Quilts class (p. 5) to actually do some of those Pinterest projects I love to pin. Our little kids will be so excited about all the Specialty ECFE classes (p. 27). Then there is the gymnastics (p. 13), soccer and tennis (p. 38) this spring. We are also excited to be attending kindergarten round-up this year (p. 40). It looks like we have a busy winter ahead of us. I hope you and all the members of your family find something fun and fascinating to do in these pages. In partnership for lifelong education, Cori Reynolds Director of Community Education

Amish Braid Rug

Instructor: JoAnne Flom Turn your old blue jeans into a beautiful piece of art for your floor. This rug looks braided but is stronger and less work because a strand of fabric is used to join it together as you go. Rug can be made round or rectangle. Materials needed: it will take about five pair of jeans and about one old shirt or blouse for a rug about 36 in size. You do not need the entire amount of the material ready for the first class but about half would be sufficient. All material can be recycled. Cut strips one inch wide by the length of the legs of the jeans. These will be sewn together into not more than three leg lengths in each strip. You will be using six of those at one time. Cut shirt into strips about 2 inches wide and they can be sewn together into approximately three yards long also. You will use two of those at a time for contrast. You will need eight medium sized safety pins, scissors, thread and needle for the class. Class size is limited. Class # 3005B FMS 2421 2 sessions $15 02/07 & 02/21/T 6-8:00 pm

Twined Rug

Instructor: JoAnne Flom This rectangular rug, made of recycled jeans and fabric, is an Indian weave and extremely durable. It has a woven effect but uses material for warp instead of thread. You will be provided with a flat wood loom which can be used for various sized rugs or placemats up to 48 by 27 inches. It can be taken apart for storage. In preparation for class: cut one old bed sheet into 2 wide strips and sew the entire sheet into one length. You will need approximately eight pair of jeans cut into strips 1 inches by the length of the leg and sewn into three lengths. If you have about 15 of these ready for the first class, that will be ample. Cut cotton fabric into 2 inch wide strips sewn together into about three yard lengths and 15 of those will be ample for the

Community Education Spring 2017

Driver Education Brainerd Public Schools Community Education Driver Education Summer 2017

Registration now available online.

Offered throughout the school year and summer by Brainerd Public Schools Community Education. Taught by college–trained Department of Education certified instructors. Let our Brainerd teachers help you meet the State Driver Education requirements! Special Note: we have updated our classroom curriculum — textbooks are out — computer lab is now part of your 30 hour classroom course. Sessions run Monday through Friday; note sessions begin on Tues. The classroom portion of the program will meet for three hours each day for the first 10 days. On the last day, a State Examiner from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety will administer the written test required for a drivers permit. Students must be 15 years of age (age exceptions must be discussed when registering), and provide the examiner with the following: a certified copy of their birth certificate (obtained from the Brainerd court house), and a secondary form of identification, such as a social security card, a certified copy of a school transcript, or a valid passport. Other secondary forms will be explained in class. The next five sessions will be on the simulator. All simulator classes are 1-1/2 hours except the last class which is two hours long. *Missed simulation classes result in the need for extra driving time to meet state requirements. If one class is missed, the student must pay for 1/2 hour of extra on street driving at the cost of $22 in order to meet the requirements. Any remaining balance or additional charges incurred after the first date of class must be paid in cash; no checks will be accepted. Students will be allowed to register for behind the wheel dates at the end of simulation or drive at a later date. To ensure that this driver’s education program is safe and appropriate, please indicate on the registration form whether the student has any special needs or requires any accommodations to be successful in this program.

Early Childhood Family Education All 3 and 4 year olds!! Required Early Childhood Screening & Kindergarten Registration Brainerd Public Schools regularly offers early childhood screening clinics during the school year for all children between the ages of 3 and 5 years. The state of Minnesota recommends this at age 3 and requires this for kindergarten entrance. Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how your child is learning and growing. The screening includes a developmental assessment, vision and hearing tests, height and weight measurement and an immunization and health history review. The purpose of this FREE screening is to identify children who may need additional time and experiences to be ready for school. The sooner we get started, the more likely your child will begin school with the necessary skills to succeed. Here’s what screening does for you: -Helps you find out how your child is doing and answers parenting questions -Connects you to early childhood programs and other community services -Registers your child for kindergarten Appointments are available throughout the school year.

Three reasons to screen at age 3: 1. 2. 3.

Screening can assist your child to be ready for school. Any health or developmental concerns can be found earlier and help can be provided sooner. Because screening is free, it’s easy and it’s good for your child!

*Kids going to Kindergarten Fall 2017...Please take the time to

have screening complete by Jan 2017!

WHO ARE WE?

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

is an opportunity for local citizens and community schools, agencies and institutions to become active partners in addressing education and community concerns.

WHAT DO WE DO?

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

brings community members together to identify and link community needs and resources in a manner that helps people to help themselves improve the quality of life in their communities.

HOW DOES T HE COMMUNIT Y BENEFIT?

COMMUNITY EDUCATION is a unique education concept that enhances these beliefs: *Education is a lifelong process; everyone in the community-individuals, business, public and private agencies-shares responsibility for the mission of educating all members of the community; and *Citizens have a right and a responsibility to be involved in determining community needs, identifying community resources and linking these needs and resources to improve their community.

WHAT DO WE ACCOMPLISH? COMMUNITY EDUCATION

results in: • A responsive education system and an improved learning climate in the schools; • Efficient and cost-effective ways of delivering education and community services; • Broad-based community support for schools and other community agencies; • An emphasis on special populations, such as at-risk youth and minorities; and • Collective action among all educational and community agencies to address quality of life issues.
