soldiers, who were killing all the Hebrew baby boys. For by grace Moses life was saved by his mother’s faith, and that not of herself, it was the gift of God, lest she ever boast. And what a gift God gave her! She not only had the peace of mind that Moses survived the Nile and Pharaoh’s soldiers, but she got hired by Pharaoh’s daughter to take Moses back home and nurse him until he was old enough to be weaned. Incredible!

When You’re Faced with the Impossible By Brooke Espinoza

* Moses when cornered, with the Israelites, at the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s army charging straight for them declared, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still." (Exodus 14:13-14) Moses confidence was not in himself, or the people of Israel, that any of them should boast. Rather, he placed the utmost confidence in the Lord, by His grace, to protect and deliver the Israelites—that would be a gift of God for sure! And were they ever saved through faith, and not of themselves, it was the gift of God, not of works, lest any of them should boast.

My favorite stories in the Bible are those that show people when faced with impossible odds, trusted God, and were blessed so mightily they knew it could have only been because of God—not of themselves, it was the gift of God. Though Ephesians 2:8-9 is referring to our eternal salvation, consider these great escapes, where people were saved by faith, not of themselves, but solely as a gift of God:

* Ezra when he refused a military escort to journey with him from Babylon to Jerusalem. Warren Wiersbe in his Old Testament Commentary, sums up the amazing faith of Ezra in traveling without a military escort:

* Noah and his family were saved from the worldwide flood merely because Noah took God at His Word, building the ark exactly as God commanded him—sparing no detail. (Genesis 7:5) Noah’s very life (and his families lives) hinged on his obedience to God. Had Noah compromised by making substitutions or taking shortcuts in building the ark, I truly believe his story would not have had a happy ending.

eternity with Him in heaven. How glorious it will be worshiping the Lord together forever! Next time you are faced with something that looks impossible, remember how God has already handled the most impossible odds you were up against-securing your eternal salvation. Trust in the Lord with whatever your facing and He will be faithful to work it out in His perfect way, so that you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was not of yourself, it was a gift of God. And when that happens, how your heart will beam with praise like David. "I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth." (Psalm 34:1)

For by grace Ezra was saved by faith, not of himself. It was the gift of God, and when Ezra would go to Jerusalem safe and sound, he couldn’t stop praising God! The only boasting Ezra was doing was boasting in the Lord! (Psalm 34:2) “Because God is gracious, therefore sinful men are forgiven, converted, purified and saved. It is not because of anything in them, or that ever can be in them, that they are saved; but because of the boundless love, goodness, pity, compassion, mercy and grace of God.”

Charles Haddon Spurgeon Lest Anyone Should Boast When God called Gideon to do battle against the Midianites, Gideon did not feel the least bit qualified. However, when he amassed an army of nearly ten thousand men, I’m sure Gideon’s mind was put more at ease. Yet, God told Gideon that was too many men. God whittled Gideon’s army down to a mere three hundred men! Pastor Chuck Smith explains, "Now what was the purpose of God? To keep the men from glorying or boasting in what God was going to do." Pastor Chuck Smith goes on to say: "You see, God knows the tendency of our old nature to want to receive glory. God knows that is a part of our nature, and therefore He placed salvation outside of our capacity, outside of our ability. He made our salvation on the basis of His grace, His work, His work through Jesus Christ and my believing that work. And then He gave me the faith to believe it." I am so glad our salvation is by grace though faith, that it is not of ourselves or else heaven would be full of people boasting of what they did to get there--if indeed anyone could bear the weight of securing their own eternal salvation. No doubt that is why Jesus came, because He knew that was a burden we could never bear, so He bore it for us on our behalf. When we, who’ve put our faith in Jesus, go to heaven we will all know it was not of ourselves, it was purely the gift of God and we will corporately praise and worship the Lord for all He’s done so we could spend 2

attaching our personal value to what we can perform. If we get our identity from the love and relationships of imperfect people, we will be disappointed and shaken when their love fails.

Titus 2 Corner Saints: Saved and Called to a Holy Calling By Sarah Renner Becoming a mother is a wonderful and awe inspiring experience. The depths of the love you feel for your children when you first see their faces. The wonder of their form as you look over their tiny bodies. The amazement of their growth and development. Their laughter which should be bottled up for sale when people need a pick-me-up. The wonder of the persons they are becoming. All great moments of motherhood we experience, we want to cherish forever and never forget.

We must gain our value and purpose from God’s view of things; the importance He assigns to our calling and the great love He has for us. This is an unshakable foundation that will not fail us. This is the eternal gift of God that will not stop giving. This allows God to work through us with His power and perseverance, and gives our hearts peace and rest in the love of Jesus. Let’s look at who we are in Christ and before God. God has always desired to have a special people that are His own treasured possession.

But motherhood is also filled with many difficult things that wouldn’t be put on a Mother’s Day card. The moments of fear, after labor and delivery, when the nurse hands you a beautiful tiny person and you think, “Wow, I don’t know how to take care of you.” The exhaustion of the early months when four hours of sleep starts to sound like a good night.

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,

looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special (treasured) people, zealous for good works. Titus 2:11-14 (NKJV)

The mountain of decisions to make and the massive variation of opinions begin immediately with: feeding them, training them, educating them, teaching them about God, and guiding them in their friendships. The difficulty of knowing how to address the needs of your children while also giving time to God, time to your husband, time to serve in the household of God, time to yourself and on and on it goes down through the years. The wonder of motherhood can become swallowed up in the sea of responsibilities.

Special here means beyond costly, treasured. God’s love for us is so deep that He has paid a price that was beyond costly to be with us. We are so treasured by God that He redeemed us through the death of His only Son to make a pure and holy people for Himself. He makes His treasured people into His family, the household of God. As a good father, God provides for, leads, and puts us to work in the family business. He is holy and makes us into a holy people who reflect His likeness. Just as our children are in our image and often look like us, talk like us, and live like us, so also God desires His children to look like Him, talk like Him, and live like Him. God is holy, holy, holy and His children are to be holy.

I am not going to address directly any of these concerns or decisions, but instead I feel the Lord has led me to present the two things that guide our ship through every season and storm. The approach we take to cherishing the sweet moments as well as how we carry out our calling must come from a deep well of understanding which is rooted first in our identity in Christ and second in the purpose of our calling.

“Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”” 1 Peter 1:13–16, ESV

The grace and perseverance we need has to come from a reliance on God that anchors the soul, an understanding of His greatness that dwarfs our inadequacies, and a dependence on forgiveness and restoration that can mend any mistakes that we make. Without these things, we would quickly run out of the joy that comes from the sweet moments and fall into confusion, despair, and anxiety about raising our children.

I want to speak about holiness as God views it. God calls us saints, which means “holy ones”; this is at the core of our identity. Our tendency is to see holiness or sanctification as something we must do and accomplish. We think we must live godly lives in order to become holy or that we can’t really be “saints” only “forgiven sinners”.

Our true identity does not lie in being a wife, mother, or friend, or in the activities and service we do but in Christ alone. This is so important because if we get our identity from things we do or from our service then we are

3

hearts and wouldn’t release Israel but the 1st born of Israel were passed over by the destroyer. God dedicated them to Himself when they were saved from death. They became holy unto the Lord not because they were extra pure in actions but because they had been saved. As a substitute for each family’s 1st born son, the tribe of Levi was set apart for special service to God.

If we are not rooted in our identity in Christ we will adopt our service, circumstance, or relationships as the source of our identity instead of our relationship to God. It is imperative to know that Christ is the source of our identity as God’s chosen, holy, and beloved children whom he has placed into service as mothers. What is holiness?

6

“Take the Levites from among the sons of Israel and cleanse them. 14 “Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the sons of Israel, and the Levites shall be Mine.” Then after that the Levites may go in to serve the tent of meeting. But you shall cleanse them and present them as a wave offering; for they are wholly given to Me from among the sons of Israel. I have taken them for Myself instead of every first issue of the womb, the firstborn of all the sons of Israel. “For every firstborn among the sons of Israel is Mine, among the men and among the animals; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for Myself. “But I have taken the Levites instead of every firstborn among the sons of Israel. Numbers 8:6, 14-18 (NASB95)

As exemplified in the Old Testament, someone or something became holy by being cleansed through a blood sacrifice and then dedicated to God’s service. Once dedicated to God someone that was holy did not live an ordinary or normal life. A holy people lived an extraordinary life because they were dedicated by God to Himself. Here are a few examples. Israel as a Nation: As a nation Israel was chosen by God for the special purpose of receiving the commands of God and passing them on to other nations. They were also chosen to have Messiah, God Himself, born through their lineage. Israel was not a holy nation because they lived extra pure lives or were strong in themselves. They were set apart by God for a special purpose because of His love for them.

After being sanctified to the Lord the Levites did not live an ordinary life. They were not given land to work for food. They worked totally in the service of God in the temple. All their families’ food came from the offerings made in the temple. Serving God was an honor but it also required them to live a life that was totally different from the rest of Israel. God declared the tribe of Levi to be “wholly given to God” and said, “They are Mine.”

“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession (or special treasure) out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. “The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the LORD loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the LORD brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.” Deuteronomy 7:6–8 (NAS)

God makes us holy when we are saved. When God passed over us because the blood of Christ and did not give us the punishment of death we deserved, we were sanctified, or made holy, for God’s own possession. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Jesus, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— Colossians 1:19–22 (NASB95)

When God redeemed and saved Israel from slavery in Egypt He declared them to be a holy nation with a special purpose. God said to them, “You are Mine!” (Leviticus 20:22, 24-26) ...you are to be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine. (Leviticus 20:26 (NASB95)

Temple:

They were saved from slavery then declared to be a holy nation. They were not to live like other nations but were to be an uncommon people. God said, “You are Mine.”

God is holy and the place He resides is made holy by His presence. When God spoke to Moses from the burning bush He told Him, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5 (NASB95).

Levites: As a tribe, they were set apart for special service to God as substitutes for the first born of Israel. The 1st born of Israel were saved from death during the Exodus. God struck down the 1st born of Egypt because they hardened their

Likewise, the temple was holy because the glory of God dwelt within it. Believers have been washed, purified, and indwelt by the Holy Spirit, which demonstrates that they also have been made holy.

4

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16–17 (ESV)

holiness by giving us His Holy Spirit. What God has made clean do not call common! Our lives are to be wholly the Lords and are to be dedicated to His service. God says to us, “You are Mine.”

Profane

When God sets apart people for service to Him, He doesn’t want to share them with anything else. He is not looking for vessels that are used partly for the common or ordinary and partly for service to Him. He doesn’t want something pure to have a little sin mixed in. He wants total devotion and an uncommon life.

The opposite of holy is not “evil” but profane. The word profane means “common” or “polluted, defiled”, it comes from Hebrew words ḥālal (2490) and ḥōl (2455), and is always used in opposition to holy. The idea behind it is that the common state of the world and humanity under sin is defiled. If we take what is purified and consecrated for God’s use and make it common, we will be introducing it to impure and defiling effects. When God sets us apart as a holy people He has removed from us our uncleanness and defilement. As a result, we are to live uncommon and undefiled lives.

We are set apart to an extra-ordinary life, one that is abundant and wonderful. We cannot live an extraordinary life if we live like the people around us. We must give up the goal of living a “normal” life. God saved you to be holy unto Him. Just as God declared the Levites to be “fully given to God” and said, “they are mine.”, so also God has said to us, “You are mine.” We must respond, “I am yours and mean it.”

What God has made clean, do not call common

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:9-10 (NIV)

When the church was beginning in Acts the Lord gave a vision to Peter to reveal to him that God was making holy the Gentiles who had previously been common. But Peter began and explained it to them in order: “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I said, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But the voice answered a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’ This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. And behold, at that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. And the Spirit told me to go with them ,making no distinction. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter; he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’ As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying,“ Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.” Acts 11:4– 18 (ESV)

We do not walk in holiness in order to gain a position of holiness before God but because we are already God’s holy people. God is holy and He is abiding in us and us in Him. He is at work in our lives to continually purify us from sin and empower us to live abundant and uncommon lives. Understanding that we are a special people, treasured by God should set us free from trying to meet the world’s expectations about motherhood. Many moms feel overwhelmed with the thought of motherhood, not because of the awesomeness of their calling before God but because of comparison with others and unrealistic expectations of perfection. We are God’s holy people and we are to please Him in our service. He loves us more than life and He will empower us to mother of our children rightly. Our lives and the lives of our children are to be uncommon by design. This mindset must be the starting point in our service to God as mothers. As we understand our set apart and consecrated position then our minds are prepared to receive God’s plans and the ways in which He wants us to mother our children. We are freed from the accusations and expectations of the world, and guided, and at times even convicted, by the loving Father who shepherds our souls.

The Gentiles were no longer to be called common now that God had demonstrated that He made no distinction between Jew and Gentile. The indwelling Holy Spirit confirmed that these Gentiles were made clean and holy before God. God has called us holy and demonstrated our

I pulled on my late-Daddy’s cowboy boots, in honor of him, and served on the maintenance team and also, along with my amazing nephews, on the "Secret Mystery Crew’ (a.k.a. secret activity # 4), a clown rodeo on bouncy balls. It was hilarious and intensely exhausting! We played right alongside the kids; racing, playing soccer, kickball and tag all while bouncing on balls. I had a total blast cheering the kids on and being a big sis to all those precious souls the Lord was wooing to Himself, despite the spiritual battles!

Missions in our own Backyard Shared from the perspective of a youth pastor's wife... by Robin Anderson

What a privilege to have been part of this unique project! What an incredible blessing to have a child ask for help during a craft, or to watch another walk around on the playing field offering to give out free hugs, or to be tagged by lots of kids during a crazy huge game of field tag, or to watch children’s guards come down over dinner as they shared parts of their little hearts and how they were so happy to be at camp. Those kids stole my heart, and it broke for them. These and so many more moments are now ingrained in me, and will be remembered always with great fondness.

I looked up in the sky right before the campers arrived and saw the perfect little horseshoe formed in the clouds!! God's perfect sign His hand was all over this camp! Thank you Jesus!

Dust. Rock climbing. Primed horses. Campfires. S'mores. Archery. Rodeo clowns. Tag. Ropes and rock courses. Carriage rides. Amazing camp food & endless cups of coffee for staff. Leaps of faith. Prayer. Worship. Teaching. Heart walls broken down. Hurting hearts receiving Jesus. Baptism.

The games and activities also served as amazing team builders and encouragement for the children; fears diminished and goals were accomplished. Kids were taught how to groom and care for horses. They also learned, through basic horse training and challenging obstacles, lessons about their own relationship with God and what it means to trust Him through the scary and unsettling trials in their own lives. On the last activity day, they had the joy of a lengthy ride through a rustic mountain trail; the highlight of nearly every camper!

In the blazing temperatures of mid-July, the third year of Camp Calvary sprang into action at Stone Cellar Campground, located near Loon Lake in our very own beautiful county of El Dorado. Eighty plus volunteers from Calvary Chapel and A Ranch of Light, a local equestrian youth outreach, formed into teams to set up a fully functioning, free horse camp for thirty-one atrisk, middle school, kids from all over the county.

Kevin Green, from Calvary Chapel Fort Bragg, led worship and taught from the Word around the campfire each night. He really engaged the kids with his sense of humor and down to earth experiences. They were encouraged to share and do devotionals in the cabins with their counselors before bed. One evening all the volunteers did a "prayer walk". We held hands in one chain, and walked silently through the camp, encircling each cabin and praying over the kids. I heard later that one of the campers knew what we were doing and thanked us. It made her feel safe and peaceful before bed!

This was the first time I was able to attend. The last couple of years I was wholeheartedly devoted to caring for my terminally ill Dad, dealing with my own personal health issues, including surgeries, and grieving the loss of many loved ones. This year God had called me, and stirred my heart to serve all 7 days. My mother-in-law flew all the way from Texas to take care of our son. What a gift! My heart overflowed with happiness at being able to serve on the frontlines alongside my husband, Edde, after such a long hiatus. 6

Never in my twenty plus years of serving the Lord had I experienced such devotion of unity in the Body. We worked as one cohesive unit, each using his or her gifts wholeheartedly, and sharing the love of Jesus. Before the week’s end, there were several professions of faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord! On the last day, many came forward to be baptized in the cold swimming hole, including a few staff who felt the Lord tugging on their heart.

exercise. As I thought about it, I was stuck by the symbolism of me plummeting face first to the ground, and of the many who huddled around me with such compassion and deep concern. That very merciful act alone made me choke up, and took me back to a moment in time, almost 4 years ago, when we suddenly lost our son to a terrible disease at birth. The church Body surrounded my husband and me with such an overwhelming and abiding presence of kindness, help and compassion that I will never forget. It was an extension of the Lord’s hand reaching out to us through our family in Christ that has bonded us for life.

At the baptism, so many kids came forward and they just kept coming! One boy had waited all year because he was too nervous to do it last year. And he was the first one baptized! To God be the glory! Then it was time for the kids to load into the vans and head back down the mountain. There was not a dry eye around as we cheered and waved goodbye through the dust. What an uplifting day, let alone week! I was reeling with joy for weeks after!

I am so grateful for the brothers and sisters He has placed in our lives. When one of us falls, and is unable to walk, the Body draws near and helps bind our wounds. Ultimately, He carries us in His arms when we are completely paralyzed in body and heart. We are held peacefully!

One amazing perk of ministering in your own backyard is the follow up. We've been able to nurture friendships with these kids while they are being discipled and plugged in at church. Plus, an after school horse program at A Ranch of Light is in the works for next month!

I remember sensing His deep, abiding, and comforting presence so strongly during that time. I was standing on Holy Ground, and a work of the Holy Spirit was going on beyond all I knew. I experienced the same at Camp Calvary. There was such a close knit work going on with His people, such a work of the Spirit. Bonds were broken, children set free, and lost little sheep born again into a new life in Christ!

On a personal note, we had a few days of set up and fellowship at the camp before the campers arrived. We did a "handicap walk" as a team building experience for the volunteers. Some of us "lost our eyesight", others like myself, lost the use of our legs. I was carried on another precious (and strong!) sister’s back, up a rough and woody, dusty trail. At one point, I slid off her back in order to readjust my position. As I jumped back on, she lost footing and tumbled forward down the slope with me nose-diving right over her, then face-planting myself in a perfect, soft and dusty dirt pile, surrounded by rocks, sticks, and stumps, just plain old forest earth floor!

Thank you for all your prayers and support for this special camp. It was definitely felt! Please pray for God to continue the miracles in these precious lives. There are so many amazing and powerfully moving stories the counselors shared over the campfire after the kids left. My note here is only one tiny perspective. God has His merciful hand on the lives of these kids, and we pray they will follow and grow deeply in Him always until His work is complete! But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— (Ephesians 2:4-5)

I was immediately surrounded by others desperate to know if I was ok. I spit out pine needles and dirt, then waited for pain to set in that never did. I was ok! The camp nurse accessed me and wiped a thick layer of dirt from my face and neck. I could have been hurt so much worse, but thankfully, God had provided the perfect little dirt pillow for my landing.

Fun Camp Fact: Our dear brother, Ray Kaufman, killed a huge rattle snake in camp near the campers’ cabins. Of course the skin was preserved in salt and the meat was BBQ'd for the staff and campers-fun for kids to lay claim to eating snake at camp!

At the campfire that night, we were encouraged to share what we learned through this team building 7
