Self Defence and martial arts are not enough as the real solutions for sexual harassment and sexual abuse against women especially by known people. The mindset of the people should change. It happens only in India that glaring and brutal gang rapes occur frequently in a state, headed by a woman Chief Minister. For example, in West Bengal 30,942 cases of crime against women were reported, leading the rest of the states in the country. India, known as the fourth most dangerous country in the world for women has other instances of violence against women with astonishing and grim variety to it acid attack, domestic violence, rape, harassment and a cluster of others. Women in the country feel happy to depict that they are well protected and pampered by their husbands without realizing that they are making themselves helpless. The women’s economic literacy is so low that they cannot play any role in family’s decision making process. Women should remember that they are also rational, intelligent and thinking human beings and that they shouldn’t be ashamed of being women. Unlike the other self defence classes, Franklin Joseph a.k.a. ‘Dr. Safety’ tries to bring this change in the mindset of people through his ‘StopCrimeonWomen.in’ workshops specially designed for women groups, NGO, school & colleges. The week ended with an empowering session for the women from the WOW (Women of the World), Bangalore Trekking Club. Several women working in different sectors participated in the StopCrimeonWomen.in’ workshop led by Joseph Franklin on February 21 at Cubbon Park. The women learnt a few BadAzz Krav Maga Israeli Military Self Defence tactics to combat crime by unknown attackers and psychological empowerment against known attackers especially in sexual abuse & harassment cases. The workshop which will be completed in two to three sessions on Saturdays at Cubbon Park aims to make the women realise about their inner strength. Franklin Joseph who has worked with Kailash Satyarthi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner says, “My workshop is at par with the new threats, women are facing with more known attackers. Selfdefence and martial arts are overrated whenever we think of women self defence. Punches and kick are not effective especially with sexual abuse and sexual harassment within home or office. The workshop starts from a crime point of view what, where, how & who does these crime and how we need new strategy to combat it eradicating the threat before it grows into real danger. About the workshop today, my interest would be to know the women’s experiences, opinions and views about it, so I can improve and learn”. Bharathi Das, a management consultant at Pioneer Services says, “It was wonderful. The techniques used are so simple and good. I will take more time for getting the crux of it.” Sreemoyee Malakar, BTC WOW Head & Organizer of the workshop says, “It was a great session. We are planning to do ‘StopCrimeonWomen.in’ workshops once in every two months and if possible, we would like to have such workshops every month.” Franklin Joseph postulates the theory that the crime against women has spread like cancer and only if the society acknowledges that this problem is internal more than external; people would get the right solution and eradicate it. Women are not weak, they do not need tricks; they need our proactive belief, our educated support. Our Indian culture has sprouted various warrior queens in our past and we need to empower them with right knowledge and right strength so that new warrior princesses and queens are born again.
