July 18, 2010 5:00 P.M. Worship in the Park

IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH AMBOY, ILLINOIS 61310 WORSHIP: 5:00 P.M. PHONE: 857-2225 EMAIL: [email protected] Pastor Vicki Sauter A CHURCH THAT WELCOMES ALL VISITORS AND CHILDREN! July 18, 2010 8th Weekend after Pentecost WELCOME TO WORSHIP! AND A SPECIAL WELCOME TO OUR GUESTS & VISITORS! PRELUDE: “Morning Has Broken,” Rodriguez WELCOME ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. P: We begin our worship in the name of the God our Creator, Jesus our Savior, and the Holy Spirit, our comforter. C: Amen P: We gather in the presence of our God to celebrate the blessings of life. C: We gather to respond to the call of God and share our common faith which binds us together as the body of Christ. P: Let us worship and give praise to God who calls us to commitment. C: God of love, we thank you for the gift of life and the beauty of creation. We worship you. We praise you. We give thanks to you! GATHERING MUSIC: Hymn: #141 (W&P) Hymn: #22 (W&P) BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: God, we hear you call to “go” and “tell the world,” but we do not respond. Forgive our lack of courage and commitment. We hear you saying to us, “Be full of love for others, following the example of Christ who loved you,” but we even find it difficult to love ourselves. Today we confess that we are not worthy of your love and ask you to forgive the sin of every area of our life. We desire a new sensitivity to the larger world around us. Open our hearts so we may hear their voices. Open our eyes so we may see their agony. Open our minds so we may understand their needs. Open our hearts so we may become involved. Our God is a great God and has forgiven our sin to set us free. Out of God’s great love for us, Jesus died on the cross and rose on the third day so the gap between us and God could be closed. Our great love for us, God provides for our everyneed in daily life. Out of great love for us, God gives us the power to respond to the needs of those around us by giving us a new desire to serve. Out of great love for us, our sin is forgiven. We are free. C: Thanks be to God.

GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you

SHARING OF THE PEACE OF CHRIST P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. P: Please share the peace of Christ with one another. PRAYER OF THE DAY: Eternal God, you draw near to us in Christ, and you make yourself our guest. Amid the cares of our lives, make us attentive to your presence, that we may treasure your word above all else, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Hymn: #779 (ELW) WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. SCRIPTURE 1 Kings 19:15 - 16, 19-21 (NRSV) 15Then the LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. 16Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. 19So he set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was plowing. There were twelve yoke of oxen ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. 20He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” Then Elijah said to him, “Go back again; for what have I done to you?” 21He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his servant. SCRIPTURE Galatians 5:1, 13-25 (NRSV) 5:1For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. 13 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. 14For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. 16Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 9:51 - 62 (NRSV) 51When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; 53but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55But he turned and rebuked them. 56Then they went on to another village. 57As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first

let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61Another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” C: Thanks be to God.

L: The Word of the Lord. Hymn: #789 (ELW) SERMON

Hymn: #595 (ELW) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: I believe God, who has created all life and continues to create new life within me. I believe in Jesus, son of God, son of man, the Savior of the world. By his life, his death and his resurrection from grave, I can know the true depth of human possibility and experience the true joy of abundant life. I believe the Holy Spirit is present now and always, calling me to faith, giving me gifts, and empowering me for service. I believe the church is the community of faith called to experience the fullness of life through God’s Word made flesh in Jesus Christ. Amen. Hymn: #638 (ELW) PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH… P: Lord in your mercy… C: Hear our prayer. MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. OFFERING OFFERTORY: “Amazing Grace,” Dengler OFFERING PRAYER: God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. Amen COMMUNION LITANY P: Welcome to the celebration! God supplies for our every need and gives us this meal to share. C: God, we thank you for the bread of eternal life. P: We come to the table, acknowledging our shortcomings and our need to experience your presence in bread and wine. C: God, we thank you for the bread of eternal life. P: And Jesus took the bread, blessed it, and broke it. He said to his friends, “Take, eat, this is my body.” Also, he took a cup, filled with fruit of the vine. After thanks, he gave it to them saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant.” P: Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the

glory are yours, now and forever. Amen INVITATION TO COMMUNION: P: Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” DISTRIBUTION OF THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION: Receive the wafer; hold it in your hand; then, dip it into the cup of wine. As the ministers give the bread and wine, they say: “The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you.” Those receiving may say: “Amen”. All those who are baptized and who believe that Christ is present in the bread and in the wine are welcome to receive the Sacrament. Those children who have not received instruction are welcome at the altar and will receive a blessing from the pastor.

COMMUNION MUSIC: Hymn: #608 (ELW) POST COMMUNION PRAYER: Gracious God, in this meal you have rained down the true bread from heaven, the body and blood of your beloved son. So by his promise, bring us to abide him, and he in us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen.
