Teach students the basics of 3D modeling Teach students the importance of research before trying to solve a problem Help students to visualize solutions Optional: If the school has a 3D printer — kids learn that everything they can imagine, can be made into reality

3DC.io app installed on iOS/Android tablets or smartphones or opened up on a web browser (such as Google Chrome) on any PC. https://3dc.io Introduction to a variety of problems in the local municipality and problems caused by urbanization globally Optional: 3D printer
Course of the Class LESSON 1 The class starts with a teacher run group discussion on how the world will change in the coming next 30 years. Students may be divided into groups. (approx. 30 minutes) Guiding questions: ● How does their future city look like? ● What will be different from today? ● What will be the most pressing issues in the local community? ● What are the new exciting opportunities? ● How to make their living environment better? After the class/group has reached a consensus on what are the biggest problems or opportunities, the teacher reminds the class that the students themselves have to solve those problems or seize the opportunities as no one else will do it for them — after defining 1
the problem students are instructed to come up with realistic and unrealistic solutions to the discussed problems — collaboration on brainstorming solutions should be encouraged. (approx. 15 minutes) HOMEWORK Students refine their ideas and gather feedback from family and friends. LESSON 2 The teacher introduces 3DC.io app and it’s basic toolset preferably using a data projector and showing how the tools work while students can play around with the app at the same time. (approx. 10 minutes) Students create 3D models of a building or other applicable solutions of how to make their future city better. (approx. 35 minutes) HOMEWORK Students continue work on their models submit their final models to the teacher (for 3D printing). LESSON 3 Optional: Before the start of lesson 3, the teacher 3D prints all future city models created by the class. Every student shows their model and describes his/her view of what the future will bring and how he/she would like to use the opportunities it brings. (approx. 40 minutes) The teacher sums up what the class has built and combines the created designs to a single future city scene. (approx. 5 minutes)

3DC.io Basic Toolset Introduction ● ● ● ● ● ●
3DC.io is all about combining different basic shapes together to come up with complex designs by moving, scaling and rotating them. You can add new shapes by clicking on the bottom left button “Add” and selecting a shape from there (e.g. a “Cube”). You can select and deselect object by clicking on them. Actions only apply to objects that have been selected. Tools “Move”, “Stretch” and “Rotate” can be selected from the bottom right. The “Move” tool is preselected by default. Apply the tool by pulling the arrows that appear along the three axis of the selected object(s). The camera can be moved around by swiping the screen with your finger or moving the mouse holding down the left mouse button when using the desktop web browser 3
version. You can zoom in the camera by pinching your fingers on the screen or using the scroll button on your mouse. To change the camera’s focus, swipe the screen with three fingers or hold down the right mouse button while moving the mouse.

Selected objects’ color can be changed by clicking on the second bottom left button by either taking a color from the “Swatch” or selecting a custom color under “Wheel”. To type in 3D text, select “Text” button from under the “Add” button. Then type in the text and click “Make”. To make a duplicate object of the selected one, click on the third bottom left button “Edit” and then press “Clone”. To deselect all selected objects, click “Deselect” under “Edit” button. If several objects are selected, you can group them by clicking the “Group” button under “Edit”. This means that you can click on any object in the group and all of the group objects will be selected or deselected. If items are already grouped, you can click on the “Ungroup” button under the “Edit”. The “Menu” button is located in the top left corner. You can save and load projects, export in .obj or .stl format from under it and also find various settings there. The top right button takes you to the Gallery where you can see what 3D models other users have made and upload your own. Every model in the gallery can be downloaded, edited and reuploaded.
