Young Professionals in Foreign Policy Position Description President Young Professionals in Foreign Policy (YPFP) is recruiting its next President to begin Fall 2017. YPFP is a dynamic organization providing a platform for a new generation of internationally-minded leaders to tackle the most pressing global challenges. The organization is at a critical inflection point for growth and innovation and primed for a motivated, creative leader who is excited to champion transformational change. Founded in 2004, YPFP has grown from a small startup to a global nonprofit 501(c)3 registered and headquartered in Washington, DC of more than 17,000 young people with branches in New York, London, Brussels, and an expanding global presence. Over the past year, YPFP has undergone a substantial transition to leverage its extensive membership and become the preeminent platform helping to get NextGen voices heard on critical international issues. Shared experiences have shaped common attitudes, perceptions, and approaches to solving problems among NextGen leaders. In a nonpartisan manner, YPFP seeks to maximize NextGen influence around the globe. Reinvigorated with an updated impact mission, YPFP’s new President will be responsible for introducing the rebranded organization to the world and defining the next phase of YPFP’s growth. YPFP’s President oversees the vitality of the organization, marshalling the financial and human resources to deliver on its mission. The President reports to the YPFP Board of Directors. I) Key Responsibilities ●​ ​Lead the ​implementation ​of YPFP’s transformation as the premier global platform amplifying NextGen voices on critical international issues, including ​fundraising​ and building partnerships to deliver on the mission. A passionate champion for YPFP’s work, lead members, staff, and partners in activities to build critical resources and infrastructure to amplifying NextGen views. Oversee nonpartisan effort to increase NextGen impact and to disrupt the status quo.

Serve as the primary public face of YPFP, representing the organization to the foreign policy and international affairs community. This includes presenting at conferences, cultivating donors and partners, and participating in a wide range of meetings and events that advance YPFP’s strategic goals Create, cultivate, and steward YPFP’s critical ​relationships with donors, supporters, and partners ​that allow YPFP to achieve its goals.

●​ ​Communicate the ​vision and mission ​of YPFP to staff, members, partners, donors, and members of the foreign policy community ●​ ​Chart and oversee the ​strategic direction​ of YPFP, ensuring our goals, objectives, actions, and activities are aligned with our mission and values; proactively generates ​original and innovative ideas​ that enable YPFP to achieve its mission and goals ●​ ​Provide ​top-line management​ of YPFP; ensure YPFP is meeting its performance targets--fundraising and programming-- and reports on progress, challenges, and opportunities to the Board of Directors ●​ ​Lead the YPFP staff​, a group of approximately 90 volunteers in Washington DC and more than 100 around the world, and occasional paid staff; directly manages a senior leadership team of two senior vice presidents and three vice presidents; leads the YPFP finance team; provides ​coaching, mentoring, and feedback​ to paid staff and volunteers; holds staff accountable for performance and impact ●​ ​Ensure YPFP has the ​financial, technological, physical, and human resources necessary to thrive and grow; oversees the YPFP budget ●​ ​Support and enable the ​growth of YPFP’s global presence​ by establishing and implementing appropriate financial and governance policies ●​ M ​ anage YPFP’s ​risk exposure​ (financial, operational, reputational). II) Skills and Attributes Commitment and Dedication​. YPFP’s President must be willing to commit time, energy, and emotion to the job. The President will be the organization’s leader day and night, flexing with our members schedules. S/he cannot step away when things become difficult. S/he must have deep motivation and purpose, and voluminous stamina. An unrelenting belief in the mission and people of YPFP is critical to sustaining commitment over time. Self-Starter​. YPFP’s President must be able to motivate her/himself every day. No-one is forcing the President to do anything; s/he must be willing and eager to produce work and outcomes for the organization on his or her own. This often means finding motivation to work

late nights, early mornings, and on weekends. Moreover, being a self-starter means being willing and able to proactively generate ideas and proposals that force the organization to do hard things. YPFP must have a President who is willing to push the boundaries of what we can accomplish. Management Skills​. YPFP’s President must be a disciplined and empowering manager. S/he should understand and/or demonstrate a willingness and ability to learn: project management, performance measurement and metrics, budgeting and organizational financial management, and the management of programs and initiatives that cut across different parts of YPFP. Ability to Prioritize​. YPFP’s President must be able to set and follow priorities – for him/herself and for the organization. The volume of work and diversity of time demands can seem all consuming; the President must be able to determine and follow through on the topics that are most important at a given moment and know where s/he can uniquely add value. S/he must also be willing and able to adjust organizational priorities and realign resources to them. Sound Judgment and Decision-Making. ​YPFP’s President must have superb judgment. S/he will be asked to resolve a bewildering array of issues, challenges, and questions, often with limited time and incomplete information. S/he must be comfortable making decisions, and the organization must have trust that those judgments are sound. Interpersonal Skills & Internal Communication Acumen​. YPFP’s President needs to possess interpersonal skills that give people – especially staff and members – confidence that they are being heard and understood. S/he must be an excellent communicator with staff, displaying the right range of confidence, empathy, humility, and decisiveness. S/he must also be capable of initiating and following through on tough conversations, especially on staff performance. Stage Presence, Charisma, and Ability to Inspire.​ YPFP’s President should have a distinct stage presence - an ability to capture people’s attention and get them excited about our mission and programs. S/he must be comfortable interacting with a wide range of stakeholders, from our volunteer staff to senior government officials, business leaders, prospective donors, new members, and beyond. Willingness to Learn - from Everyone​. YPFP’s President needs to be open to new ideas from staff, the Board of Directors, and members. S/he must relish feedback. S/he should promote good ideas no matter the source, and recognize that the role of President is as much about learning as it is imparting knowledge. Coachability and humility are key. Professional Understanding of Global Affairs​. YPFP’s President should have a sophisticated professional understanding of global affairs. While direct “foreign policy” experience is not required, the President should have personal experience and/or credibility that allow him/her to stand out in international affairs. He/she should be an active and engaged member of global affairs professionals in Washington DC.

Vision​. YPFP’s President should be able to affect YPFP’s vision and communicate the vision of the organization in a clear, cogent, inspirational, and authentic voice. While YPFP is not seeking a new vision, the next President should have the faculties to be able to chart a vision for the organization if one is needed. S/he must also be able to adjust the direction of the organization based on changes to, or around, YPFP. II) Core Requirements ● Based in Washington DC ● Ability to perform 40 hours per week on YPFP initiatives with availability to conduct regular meetings in the evening and on weekends, ● Impeccable professional reputation; well-regarded among colleagues across the international affairs community, and ● Commitment to modeling and upholding YPFP’s values. ● Travel less than 10%
