Priority of Geranoaetus Kaup, 1844 over Tachytriorchis Kaup, 1844 (Aves: Accipitridae) based on the first reviser principle FÁBIO RAPOSO DO AMARAL1,5, FREDERICK H. The generic name Geranoaetus Kaup, 1844 (type species: Falco aguia Temminck = Spizaetus melanoleucus Vieillot) generally has been applied only to its type species, G. melanoleucus, although inclusion of fossil species in the genus has been suggested (Wetmore 1933; Amadon 1963). Although Geranoaetus is still recognized by some authors (e.g., Thiollay 1994; Remsen et al. 2010), others consider it a junior synonym of the genus Buteo Lacépedè, 1799, because of similarities to some species in that genus (e.g., Wetmore 1933; Hellmayr & Conover 1949; Clark 2006). Recent studies of the molecular phylogenetics of buteonine hawks (Riesing et al. 2003; Lerner et al. 2008; Amaral et al. 2006, 2009) unanimously agree on the lack of monophyly of three buteonine genera, namely Buteo, Leucopternis Kaup, 1847 and Buteogallus Lesson, 1830, as currently recognized (Remsen et al. 2010). To align the classification with evolutionary history, a reorganization of the generic nomenclature of the buteonines was proposed by Amaral et al. (2009). Among the proposed modifications was the inclusion of Buteo albicaudatus, Buteo polyosoma and G. melanoleucus in a genus apart from Buteo. This decision was based on the monophyly of these three species, a closer relationship of most species of Buteo to some species currently included in the genus Leucopternis than to these three species (Lerner, et al., 2008; Amaral et al. 2009), and shared ecological and morphological characteristics (Thiollay 1994; Ferguson-Lees & Christie 2001). However, the name Tachytriorchis Kaup, 1844 (type species Falco pterocles Temminck = Buteo albicaudatus Vieillot), which was erected in the same work in which the name Geranoaetus was first presented, could also be applied to this clade. As first revisers, Amaral et al. (2009) assigned the species to Geranoaetus instead of Tachytriorchis in their online supplemental materials. However, according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1999), that assignment of Geranoaetus was not valid because it was published in an online appendix rather than in print. For this reason, we are correcting the problem by acting, in print, as first revisers (article 24.2 and recommendation 24A of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature) and designating the priority of Geranoaetus Kaup, 1844 (Class. der Säuge. und Vögel, page 122) over Tachytriorchis Kaup, 1844 (Class. der Säuge. und Vögel, page 123). Thus, as in Amaral et al. (2009), we propose that the genus Geranoaetus should be expanded to include Geranoaetus albicaudatus (Vieillot) comb. nov. and Geranoaetus polyosoma (Quoy & Gaimard) comb. nov., in addition to Geranoaetus melanoleucus.

Acknowledgments Special thanks to Richard C. Banks for pointing out the need to present the first reviser act in print. Vitor Piacentini, two anonymous reviewers and subject area editor Terry Chesser contributed insightful comments and corrections.
