The programme offers ASEAN students a unique opportunity to study and expose to Japan’s modernisation, its history, culture, heritage, as well as the development of the society specifically through a wide range of corporations and industries.

To provide a venue for networking and building a friendship among the future leaders of the ASEAN region The programme is developed by employing a variety of learning components including lecture, field exposures, group seminar, self-reflection, group reflection and learning journal. The study and visit programme includes the following itineraries: Chiba, Tamachi, Onarimon, Yokohama, Tokyo, Gotemba, Izu Peninsula, Kamakura and Yokosuka.

ASEAN University Network Established in November 1995 in response to the 4th ASEAN Summit’s call to deepen regional identity and build human resources through strengthening the existing network of universities and institutions of higher learning, the ASEAN University Network (AUN) is an integral component of the ASEAN Community-building. The AUN Charter and the Memorandum of Agreement on the Establishment of the AUN spells out its role and responsibilities to: (i) promote cooperation among ASEAN scholars, academicians and scientists in the region; (ii) develop academic and professional human resources in the region; and (iii) to promote information dissemination among the ASEAN academic community. 1

Through collaborative activities addressing these priorities, the AUN contributes to deepening awareness of regional identity among the young people of the region. The AUN today is widely recognised for its vital role in building a regional pool of expertise that actively contributes to the ASEAN-Community-building through Youth Mobility programmes and exchanges, Academic Collaboration, Standards, Mechanisms, Systems and Policies of Higher Education Collaboration, Course Programme Development and Regional and Global Policy Platforms. In more than a decade of it strategic and operational work, AUN’s role has evolved from self-initiated, cost-sharing efforts to empowerment through expanded membership and outward-looking partnerships with institutions and networks of higher learning in several of ASEAN’s Dialogue Partner countries. Through these partnerships, ASEAN’s Dialogue Partners have developed an appreciation for a sense of shared commitment to the AUN’s mission, values, resources and communities. AUN today stands an integral part of ASEAN Community-building, with a clear role to play in the ASEAN Socio-Cultural community process, through its many partnerships for human resource development though higher education.

Chiba University Chiba University was founded in 1949, unifying several regional former national colleges and schools such as Chiba Medical College and Chiba Normal School. Its fundamental mission since then has been, as encapsulated by the inscription on the University Bell, ad altiora semper (always toward the higher), to equip students with the ability to make mature and informed judgments while nurturing and guiding their creativity. Pursuing these goals of excellence has resulted in Chiba University becoming one of the leading academic research centers of Japan. Chiba University undertakes teaching and research to maintain, disseminate and advance knowledge. In its teaching Chiba University will seek to meet the interests of students and the needs of the community, and to foster generally the exploration and discovery of ideas and knowledge. The university has achieved national acclaim and has grown to become a world-class university that has contributed significantly to the society. Chiba University has links with leading universities in all over the world. With 10 faculties, 11 graduate schools, one of the largest university hospitals in Japan, and 21 research centers in four beautiful campuses, Chiba University is achieving its goal to become a world-leading institution by working closely with students, researchers, faculty, administration, our local community, our country, and people all over the world. Chiba University is also among the Six Universities Network/International Education and Research System, Japan (SUN/SixERS), a consortium of six Japanese national universities—Chiba University, Kanazawa University, Kumamoto University, Nagasaki University, Niigata University and Okayama University—has its aim to create a center for world-class innovative research, develop highly trained graduates for leadership in a 2

globalising world, contribute to local communities and promote international activities, through various forms of collaboration based on each university’s respective strengths and traditions. The partnership agreement between AUN and SUN/SixERS was officially established in April 2013 to explore the possibility of collaborative framework on student mobility, student placement and internship. Exchanges with overseas partner universities, thus, are among SUN/SixERS’ current initiatives and are keys to encourage a dynamic development and to achieve the anticipated milestone.
