Student Success With Guided Pathways
Presenter: Estrella Barrera Josh Beach
Express concerns about how the new model is going to be implemented. New students entering the college will benefit from Guided Pathways but previous students will not benefit. What does the college have lined up for existing students? Members suggest ACC look into getting a shuttle bus to transport students to other campus. 70 % of students attend community college do not graduate, transfer, etc.. Faculty Development implements new training for advisors and counselors. How we work with students that are here and move them forward when they lack college skills. There is no one keeping track for students. Member suggest more proactive in the student career and referring them to appropriate department for counseling. Hiring additional license clinical/professions not sure if it would be a center or campus models. Executive Deans will be over a group of counselors who are clinical license professional. Discussion and Feedback
Presenter: Dr. B.W.McClendon Dr. Ben Ferrell
Leander Campus has been named “San Gabriel Campus” Austin Metrorail will build a pedestrian crosswalk for the students to get to Leander Suggestion was put forth to have the Board of Trustees look into getting the Member asked if the new emergency alert system will also be incorporated into the portables and the response was that there is a new contract in place to replace all of the BRG’s in all the rooms. The new system will be installed in the new campuses and then retrofit all the other campuses and the ones that don’t have any. Dr. Webb shared information regarding an sustainability innovate Green Grant that Garza High school received for the last 18 year in the amount $10.000. Invited SGA students to stop by and getting involved. Dr. Ferrell stated to all of us that if we want to get involved in sustainability to contact Andy Kim and join the committee.
SGA: The professors at ACC are certainly qualified to teach. Many professors can improve in the ways in which they communicate information to students. SGA: Requesting more departmental collaboration and communication SGA: While ACC continues to expand, we must not forget the human factor, especially at the community college level. We need to consider where a student is coming for before determining where they are headed. Suggestion: Tools such as the Meyers-Briggs Type indicator and the greater availability and advertisement of mental health and counseling services would certainly help propel ACC to great new heights. SGA: Students did not receive proper advising related to certain courses that would have benefitted from taking as a freshman at ACC. Student was not aware that all first-year students with fewer than 12 hours of college credit are required to take the EDUC 1300 class which provides students with “essential learning skills for college success”. Students would benefit from an option to tour the ACC facilities face-to-face and get to interact with others with similar interests and majors.
