4 – 10 December 2016 Celebrating & Protecting Human Rights 4 – 10 December

www.nihrf.com

Welcome to the Northern Ireland Human Rights Festival. 2016 hasn’t exactly gone to plan with regards the protection of human rights locally or globally. Challenges like the continuing crisis in the Middle East, Brexit and the election of Donald Trump in the US have focussed our minds on threats. But we hope that in some small way the range of events and issues in this year’s programme can help us consider more positive and constructive approaches to human rights concerns. The Human Rights Consortium took the decision five years ago to establish this festival with the primary aim of providing a gateway to human rights for the people of Northern Ireland. A vehicle by which we could unapologetically use any artistic mediums we could get our hands on, to increase exposure, immersion and hopefully understanding of human rights in Northern Ireland. We knew from our own work and from that of our members that human rights were not just the stuff of academic debate in law lectures or courts (as much as we love those), but were also rooted in the daily struggles by individual people trying to lead lives of dignity, seek justice and ensure proper protection for them and their loved ones. So we wanted to expose people to that and open up the conversation about what human rights are and how they apply to our lives. We felt that by doing so we could help increase support for human rights. By beginning that conversation we also exposed ourselves to risk. We didn’t sit back and only have cosy conversations in our own echo chambers, with the people who agreed with us. We engaged new audiences and new voices. Often from people who may not have traditionally seen themselves, or been seen by others as being rooted in support for the principles of human rights.

One of the ongoing challenges for human rights is that different individuals and groups can often interpret and employ human rights arguments to suit their own position, regardless of whether that view enjoys popular support or has an uncontested legal grounding. Human Rights are universal yes, but they are also at many levels an imperfect tool that can sometimes hinge on the requirement for us as humans to agree and implement what those rights mean in different political and social contexts. Northern Ireland is no different in that regard. This year’s programme presents a range of perspectives on a number of rights issues that are both emotive and contested. From Brexit, the Human Rights Act, the important issue of access to abortion and many others. This festival was always about getting those arguments, perspectives and interpretations out in the open and on table for discussion so that they can be critiqued, challenged and tested. To do any less, to avoid the difficult issues and conversations, would be a failure to reflect the reality of human rights as they exist in the world today. As usual the festival is jam packed with events and activities that are bound to provide entertainment, education and exposure to human rights issues no matter what your tastes. We have a range of wonderful events such as an exhibition by the talented cartoonist Ian Knox, who is also the artist in residence for this year’s festival. Finally, if you only get to one event during the festival then please show your support for the Stand Up For Your Rights comedy fundraiser that will be helping us raise funds to hopefully continue the festival into the future. We hope you enjoy the events in this year’s programme and we look forward to seeing you during the festival.
