11 April 2016 Dear Primary School Parents, I am writing to you about the plans for the continued development of the curriculum at Island School. As you may know we have been continually developing our curriculum for the last 10 years, and this letter is to keep you informed of the next steps. In common with all ESF schools we have adopted a joint decision to implement the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in the Lower School. For us this means years 7 and 8. We see this as a further step in making the transition from the primary schools following the IB Primary Years Progamme (PYP) into secondary education. This means that we will retain the range of different subjects that all students follow in years 7 and 8, but enhance the links between them and the skills that are common to them. We will look at learning with more of an emphasis on understanding the concepts behind the ideas as well as the ideas themselves. For example we will be keen to spread the literacy skills learned in English, so they are practiced and used in all subject areas using a more common language to describe them. For Island School the changes in years 7 and 8 are not so great, as they align with changes we have already made. However due to our impending relocation, we do not expect to see the school applying for IB authorisation for the MYP before the 2018/2019 school year. For Island School this curriculum development applies to the first 2 years of secondary education only. Although the full MYP is a 5year programme, the Foundation is not looking to end iGCSE examinations. We believe the IBO are very happy to accommodate this situation and to consider ESF Schools for accreditation as a 2 year programme only. Note that other schools will be applying for authorisation for 3 years, but due to the nature of our relocation, we will start with 2 years only. Once these changes have been embedded in all ESF schools, we will organise a consultation process to examine its success before making any decisions about any further steps. We will have information sessions at Island School and at our partner Primary Schools as we move forward with this project. Yours faithfully,
