Dear Parents/Guardians: In the 2016-2017 school year, students in grades 3-11 will be administered the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exams. NEISD students will take the STAAR exam for which they are eligible. Listed on the following page are the District testing dates. The state’s Student Success Initiative (SSI), passed by the 76th Legislature in 1999, requires students in grades 5 and 8 to pass both the math and reading STAAR exams in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Students in grades 5 and 8 who do not pass the first administration of the math and/or reading STAAR exams will be provided additional retesting opportunities. Under STAAR, first time 9th grade students in 2011-2012 and thereafter are required to take End-ofCourse (EOC) exams for courses they will complete this spring. To graduate under STAAR, students will take exams for English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology and U.S. History. North East Independent School District is committed to providing every child, every day with the knowledge and skills to be successful on the STAAR exams.
