Shall we visit Ooty? Law makers should not be law breakers. Would you please help me? No man can call back yesterday. A good teacher can/could make even boring lessons interesting. May God bless you! I wish you might tell me the truth. Eve teasers should/must be punished severely. In the army the soldiers should obey their officers. The sky is overcast. It may rain but I don‘t think it would. The patient is critical but who knows he may recover. The world should avoid war. I can smell something burning in the kitchen. It may be the meat. May I come in? Yes you may. During my teens, I would always sit for hours together before the TV. Don‘t worry. This may happen to anyone. If you worked hard, you would pass. Soldiers sacrifice their lives that others may be happy. Caesar‘s wife must be above suspicion. People who live in glass house should not throw stones. Give me a fish I can live for a day. Teach me to fish I can live for life. God cannot be everywhere, so he made mothers. He who pays the piper can call the tune. By this, I do not imply hippies and drop-outs or any one of that band of unhappy people for who modern society is too sick and uncivilized to bear. No, I mean those quiet, orderly people, living apparently blameless lives, who enrich their humdrum existence by adopting odd quirks and passions, and likely routines or harmless manias for useless objects. Like the secretary I had, who collected earwigs, though what she did with them I never knew. I believe that she love them because there were small and thin like herself and had a way of scuttling about in very much the same way she did. Life, I am sure, would be very much poorer without such people in it. Sometimes, I feel I am lacking in personality, since I have none of these strange habits, unless you count the fact that I never eat eggs unless they are boiled in milk. QUESTIONS: 44. What attracted the author? Ans: The unusual habits of people 45. According to the author, who are the people who have unusual habit? Ans: Quiet orderly people. Living apparently blames less lives. 46. What did the author‘s secretary collect? Ans: she collected earwigs 47. Why did she love them, according to the author? Ans: Because it was small and thin like herself. 48. Do you think that the author has any strange habit? Of so what is it? Ans: Yes, the author had a strange habit. He eats eggs only if they are boiled in milk.

Julius Caesar returns to Rome after defeating the sons of Pompey Brutus and his men became jealous. They conspired and killed Caesar Brutus‟ speech:
Brutus tells his countrymen that he loved Caesar dearly. But his love for
the country was greater. If Caesar was alive they would all be slaves. Brutus says that Caesar was ambitious and so he killed him. Antony‟s speech:
Antony says that he has come to bury Caesar and not to praise him. But
he goes on to speak of the good deeds of Caesar. Caesar had filled the state treasury with the ransom for his captives. He had wept for the poor. He had refused the crown offered to him three times. By repeatedly calling Brutus and his men ―honourable men‖ Antony proves them to be dishonourable. Brutus‟s Reasoning: The Speech of Brutus is a piece of reasoning. It is argumentative and logical. Brutus says that he killed Caesar for the sake of his country. He does not offer any proof. Antony‟s Emotion: Antony appeals to the emotions of the people. He uses irony and repetition to disprove Brutus. He shows the dead body of Caesar and makes the people shed tears. He works on their feelings and slowly wins them over to his side. Conclusion: Brutus speech is logical and Antony‘s speech is emotional

Gandhi as a crusader: Gandhi fought for women‘s equality. He was a ceaseless crusader. He had a number of women followers. They took part in all his movements. His views on women:
Gandhi believed in education for women. Gandhi told that the
wife is not a man‘s slave but his companion and help mate. A woman is superior to man in moral strength. So it is wrong to call her ―the weaker sex‖. His fight against superstition : Gandhi did not follow tradition blindly. He fought against superstition. He tried to banish untouchability, child marriage and child widow-hood. He stood for truth which is godliness. Women and Ahimsa : According to Gandhi ‗Satyagraha ‗means‖ ‗soul force‖ Ahimsa means infinite love. It also means the ability to bear pain. Woman is a symbol of suffering Sita, Savitri, Damayanti and Draupadi were his ancient models. They had these virtues. These virtues are needed for Satyagraha. Gandhi‟s hope in women:
According to Gandhi the power of non-violence was lying
dormant in women. Women are endowed with the qualities of love and forgiveness. They occupy their proud position as ‗mother, maker and silent leader. They can play an important role in bringing in peace. He wished that women should come together to spread the gospel of non-violence. Conclusion: According to Gandhi, women are the embodiment of sacrifice humility, faith, non-violence, and knowledge.

MARKS 1X5=5 A PSALM OF LIFE H.W.LONG FELLOW
The poet advises the youth to have a positive outlook towards life. Death is not the goal life. Our soul is deathless . Our heart beats are like drum beats played during the funeral march. ‗Art is long life is short‘. The world is like a battle field. Life is like a temporary camp made by the soldiers in the battlefield. We should act like heroes and not be silent like cattle. We must act in the living present. Great men have left their foot prints for the people to follow. Footprints of great men give us hope and courage. The poet advises the readers to learn to work. Our duty is to work hard and leave the rest to God.
WOMENS RIGHT ANNIE LOUISA WALKER Annie Louisa walker expresses her views on women strongly and clearly in this poem. Women have rights and men cannot rob them. A woman‘s mission is to make her home bright. Women want to live within the four walls of their house and away from unpleasant sounds. They do not waste their time in laziness or in useless thought. They are like humble plants. The road side plants collect rain water and bring forth flowers and fragrance. Women also fill their homes with brightness and love. Women are unknown beyond their family circle but are happy and have the privilege to make their home happy. They live in seclusion, spread happiness and die unknown.
A NOISELESS, PATIENT SPIDER WALT WHITMAN
The poet saw a spider standing alone on an elevated place. It tried to build a web. It sent out filament endlessly from its mouth. It tried to connect the space around. It worked noiselessly and patiently. Like the spider, the human soul stands in isolation. The soul tries to connect with God. It searches for the bridge of hope or delicate thread of hope to connect itself with God. The human heart wishes to unite the entire universe by the thread of love.

ENGLISH WORDS V. K. GOKAK
V.K. Gokak, a famous novelist, poet in Kannada and professor of English, wrote poetry in English. This poem is addressed to the English words. He brings out the efficacy of English words. English words crossed the seas and reached the foreign lands. Leech craft is an art that removes impure blood by means of leech. Like this, English language cleansed the impurities in the soul. The forest fire burns down the unwanted plants. Like the fire. English words destroyed the ignoble thoughts. They removed the darkness of ignorance. The poet says that in the beginning there was word; in the middle there is word. Finally the word is with God in man. Here is an allusion to the Bible.
SNAKE D.H. LAWRENCE Snake, wonderful poem, speaks about the poet‘s feelings towards the snake. On a hot summer day a snake came to his water trough to drink water. The poet had to wait for his turn. The snake was golden in colour. His knowledge of education cautioned him that it was a poisonous snake. His inner voice urged him to kill the snake. He took a log and threw at the snake. The snake was unhurt, but it was shocked and ran into its hole. Now the poet felt guilty. The snake did not harm him. But he harmed the snake. It was like a guest that came to his house. He insulted his guest. He was so sorry for his mean act.
THE MAN HE KILLED THOMAS HARDY This poem brings out the ugly face of war. The poet was in the battlefield. He shot at his enemy and killed him on the spot. Now a thought crossed the mind of the poet. Why should he kill a person who had done him no harm? Was there any personal enmity between the poet and his so-called enemy? The meaningless war made them meaningless enemies. The poet and his enemy joined the army because he was unemployed. Actually they were not patriots. They were soldiers made out of poverty. It was only the situation that forced them to be cruel to each other. If these two had met in an inn, they would have become friends and bought a drink to each other. The poet blames the war for this tragic event.
