OUR COMMUNITY: One of the most picturesque towns in Rutland County, Proctor is uniquely situated along a north-south valley of the Otter Creek. Our vast marble deposits, the proximity to the “Great Falls” of Otter Creek, and the rail lines are among the primary reasons Redfield Proctor, Sr. formed the Vermont Marble Company here in 1880. Six years later, the settlement of Sutherland Falls was recognized as the Town of Proctor by the Vermont State Legislature. Our legacy as the former center of the global marble industry forms the basis for the cultural experience of Proctor today. We are home to the Fletcher Proctor Memorial Bridge, the Vermont Marble Museum, and the Wilson Castle.
OUR VISION: “The PHS graduate is a well-rounded, creatively innovative thinker, possessing the intellectual, emotional, and technological skills necessary to thrive as a member of everchanging local and global communities.”
OUR LEARNING MODEL: Designed to create self-directed learners, Proctor’s Learner-Centered model of education is built upon a foundation of proficiencies—knowledge, concepts, and skills that students acquire before graduating to ensure their success in life. Students work toward meeting a set of content proficiencies for each discipline, and a set of transferable skills across disciplines. These are broken down into performance indicators, each of which a student must meet in order to meet the larger proficiency or transferable skill. In order to accurately report out on what students know and are able to do, teachers score students in a separate Habits of Work (HOW) category. Project Based Learning opportunities provide authentic, interdisciplinary experiences for students. With the intent of cultivating self-direction, teachers empower each student to be able to identify where they are in their learning, where they’re going, and how to get there. Each student has a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) through which they set academic and long-term goals, identify steps they’ll take toward meeting the proficiencies (through extended learning opportunities, internships, online learning, dual enrollment, early college, and conventional coursework), monitor their own progress through the proficiencies, upload evidence of success, and reflect on their learning. REPORTING: Progress in the proficiencies, transferable skills, and habits of work is reported as either beginning (BP), approaching (AP), meeting (MP), or exceeding (EP) proficiency. Exceptional academic performance is recognized via the Latin Honors system: Summa Cum Laude—exceeds proficiency in 80% of coursework, meets in 20%; Magna Cum Laude—exceeds proficiency in 50% of coursework, meets in 50%; Cum Laude—exceeds proficiency in 30% of coursework, meets in 70%.
