Pote’s Notes Now that I’ve had time to sit and think … well, not really. These first two months have been a whirlwind of activities with the installation of Kena’s 2017 Divan and the Unit and Club Officers, along with individual unit and club installation ceremonies that were requested … Wow!

Lady Sandy and I would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and many thanks to Illustrious Myke and Lady Donna. They invested numerous hours and quite a few late nights into a very successful year for Kena Shriners. I would also like to thank all who imparted their wisdom and experiences – all of value. As we prepare for our impending move to a presently unknown location, I would remind the units and clubs to preserve our historical memorabilia. With proper examination of what we have and what is significant, we should be able to accomplish this relocation without losing or misplacing anything of value to our history.

If you have not been to Alaska before, consider joining the Potentate’s Trip. We’ll be traveling up the coast from Vancouver to Seward, stopping at some beautiful locations along the way. Then land travel to the Denali. The wilderness around Denali is virtually unspoiled and is such a magnificent experience. Then rail travel to Anchorage where we’ll catch our flight back to Dulles. The 2017 Potentate’s Ball, Southern Nights, will be held on Saturday, April 22. Music will be by The Southern Velocity Band. Come out and join us for a good time.

Imperial Session in Daytona Beach is right around the corner. Begin making your preparations now!! Sincerely and fraternally,

Ronnie Mullins “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” ~Edith Wharton

A Message from the High Priest & Prophet

Geoffrey D. Lyster

Greetings. I would like to start by thanking the Nobility for electing me to serve as your High Priest and Prophet (HP&P) for 2017. It truly is an honor to serve. Theresa and I are looking forward to meeting with as many Nobles and their Ladies as possible in the coming year. As a brief recap, I want to relay that Breakfast With Santa was a smashing success! Due to the generosity of our Santa Supporters and guests, we raised nearly $4,000.00 (after expenses)! I would like to add my personal thanks to the myriad of people who helped to make this year’s Santa event very memorable for all of our children . As your HP&P I am working on several issues this year. First, I am chairing the Building & Grounds Committee. If you have any suggestions regarding facilities management, the sale of the building, or purchase of a new facility, please let me know . This year, I will also be helping out with the Potentate’s Ball (Southern Nights – April 22); the Sweetheart’s Luncheon (December 3) and I will be coordinating the 2017 Shriners Hospital Pilgrimage to Philadelphia, PA. I hope you choose to come out and join us for these fun events. I thoroughly enjoyed the “Installation Season” and the opportunity to visit several Units and Clubs. It looks like we have a sterling group of new Unit/Club leaders to lead Kena. Additionally, I continue to actively participate with the Divan, the Legion of Honor, Yacht Club and Shepherds. Along my journey, I notice that Shriners are a diverse lot. Some like to be out in front gregarious and extroverted; while others like to work hard behind the scenes ensuring event success for the greater good. As an organization, we need to value each of these contributions, since each is integral to our success. And of course, I find all our Shriners have the desire to help children while contributing to the World’s Greatest Philanthropy. While you are out and about, in the workplace and in your neighborhoods, continue to be mindful of our need to bring in new members. The best way to ensure the perpetual success of Kena and the Shriners is to bring in new members and get them involved, especially in their first couple of months . My concluding thought is that while I am serving as your HP&P, I want to be a communication conduit. If you have any ideas, or want to discuss something, just pull me aside or drop me a line ([email protected]). I will strive to carry your ideas forward for discussion and possibly get them incorporated into our temple processes. I look forward to seeing you around! .

PLEASE NOTE We Need Your Help

When you are ill or facing hospitalization, we want to know. If one of your fellow NOBLES dies, we need to know. Call the Shrine office at 703-573-4202 and talk to the Recorder, Noble Nick Nichols, or the staff. They will make sure everyone is notified properly.

Units and Club Leaders: email [email protected] You may think that your particular unit or club has had no newsworthy activities, events or other happenings within the past two months – or plans for any in the immediate future. All bets are that such a thought is simply NOT TRUE. There are many individuals who anxiously await reading about what those within your group -- or even the group as a whole—has done or has planned for doing in the near future. Composing an article for each and every edition of the Kenagram should be an action item on your monthly agenda.

Late Winter? Or Early Spring?!

Either way, your Kena Shrine Band is ready to play!

KENA SHRINE BAND By Roland A. Hassebrock

As Noble Jack Whisler informed you in his last article for the January & February Kenagram, our new slate of officers and all of our musicians are off to a very aggressive start for the New Year! Our performance at the 2017 Installation of Officers (pictured on the left) received numerous complimentary feedback; like: “do you have a CD that we can buy?” And “will you be playing for one of the Shrine Dances?” Unfortunately the answer to both was NO; however, we too were very pleased with the sound of our band as we were able to enhance our sound with the support from some of our friends in the Redskins Marching Band. From this “big” band (16 person) to our normal size (9-10 person) band (pictured left) we did not reduce the quality of the performance.

This assessment was verified by the most favorable comments from our first 2017 outside audience at the CATON Merchant House Assisted Living in Manassas, VA. The most pleasing comment was “we hope you come back to play for us again”. It doesn’t get much better than that! From this concert on 12 January, the Band performed another concert, this time on 2 February 2017 at the Willow Oaks Assisted Living in Manassas, VA. We in the KENA Shrine Band provide Musical Entertainment/Therapy to our many audiences in the different Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities, and Senior Centers but our audiences make all of us in the Band “Feel Good” as we see them (see picture of people in the audience dancing) receive enjoyment from our concert. We have many in our Band going through some major issues either with their own medical condition or that of their spouses – please keep each of our KENA Shrine Band members in your prayers. We know it will be difficult to keep our performance schedule but we also know how much our audiences appreciate our music, so we will continue to try our best to show everyone how much the KENA Shrine Band loves them and you. We have 3 more scheduled concerts during the time frame of this KENAGRAM: on February 16th we will have played at Brookdale Assisted Living in Manassas, on March 14th we will be at Birmingham Green Nursing Home in Manassas, on March 28th the Insight Memory Care Facility in Fairfax, on April 6th we will be at Brookdale and on April 20th we will be at Oaks of Wellington. Our rehearsals are 3/7,3/28, 4/11, 4/25, 5/9, 5/23, 6/13, and 6/27

First Lady’s Corner

These first two months of 2017 have absolutely flown by on jet wings. There are a number of people to whom thanks are owed. I feel sincerely blessed with the team supporting me this year, and send each one a very big THANK YOU! Chief Aide, Lady Lan Wiles; Personal Aide, Lady Beverly Soutter; Decorations Chair, Lady Junelea Alexander, and Hospitality Chair, Lady Sue Kidwell. They have all been there each and every time to answer questions, help with events and, in general, just be there for anything I needed, even before I asked. It is early in the year, but I wanted to thank them now, and all the other kind Ladies and Nobles who have been so very helpful with support and advice, because without them things simply would not get done or be as much fun. A big thank you as well to the Patriot Shrine Club, who donated more than $6,000 to my First Lady’s Project for the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital. Thank you also to all the Ladies who came out in January and made suggestions on programs they would like to have during the coming year. Lady Jean Marie King did a superb job of educating more than twenty of us on how to “Downsize, Declutter, and Organize” during the February Ladies Night. She gave us a lot of food for thought and an easy plan of action to make a difficult task much more enjoyable. Ladies Night on March 13 will be “Coloring, Conversation, and Cocktails,” using the mandala adult books. This should be a relaxing evening for all of us. A health practitioner will visit us for the April Ladies’ Night to talk about women’s health issues. A “New To You” dress sale will be held at Kena on Saturday, April 29th from 10 AM to 2 PM. If you have any formal gowns, dressy tops, skirts or handbags you would like to donate (in the spirit of downsizing), please contact me at 703-209-3239. New dresses with the tags still on them have been donated already, as well as gently used gowns. The funds raised from this sale will go toward the First Lady’s Fundraiser for 2017 as mentioned during the Installation. More information on the sale will be sent out on the ladies list serve closer to the date. The theme for the Potentate’s Ball on April 22 is “Southern Nights.” Think romantic summer evenings, flowers, the moon and stars in the Kena ballroom with your Noble. See the flier (p.15) in the Kenagram for more information. The Southern Velocity Band will be playing our favorite music and we may have a surprise visitor. In the meantime, Celebrate the Shrine and enjoy getting out to activities with your Noble as well as those just for the ladies! Fondly,

Lady Sandy
