2018  SPRING  TRY-­‐OUTS  &  FREQUENTLY  ASKED  QUESTIONS    

What  kind  of  paper  work  is  required?                                            

1    .    CURRENT  PHYSICAL  ON  FILE:    In  compliance  with  VHSL  rules,  before  any  student  can  try   out  or  participate  in  conditioning  or  any  sports  team,  they  MUST  have  a  CURRENT  ATHLETIC   PHYSICAL  on  file  dated  since  May  1,  2017.    Physical  forms  can  be  downloaded  from  our   website  or  picked-­‐up  from  the  Athletic  Office.      

2.    REGISTER  ON-­‐LINE  AS  AN  ATHLETE:    albemarleathletics.com                                                                           Completing  this  on-­‐line  registration  process  minimizes  parents/students  from  having  to  fill   out  duplicate  &  multiple  layers  of  paper  work.    Since  this  information  provides  important   emergency  &  medical  info,  it  is  key  that  you  are  specific  with  which  sport  you  are  trying-­‐out.     For  example,  Spring  coaches  can  not  obtain  information  if  a  student  only  registered  as  a  Fall   Football  player  but  is  now  trying  out  for  Baseball.   3.    ACADEMICALLY  ELIGIBILITY:    The  VHSL  requires  that  in  order  for  an  athlete  to  be   academically  eligible,  they  MUST  HAVE  PASSED  5  CLASSES  FOR  CREDIT  in  the  previous   semester.    For  Spring  sports,  this  would  be  1ST  SEMESTER!    INCOMPLETES  DO  NOT  COUNT  AS   CREDIT.    In  order  for  an  INCOMPLETE  to  count  towards  your  VHSL  eligibility,  MISSED  WORK   must  be  completed  with  a  grade  in  the  computer  by  FRIDAY,  MARCH  2  -­‐  2  wks  after  Try-­‐outs     DO  NOT  PROCRASTINATE  –  get  it  done!  

AT  THIS  TIME,  there  are  NO  ACPS  student  on  Monday,  2/19.    However,  optional  practices  will   still  start.  This  will  be  the  first  day  of    evaluations  that  will  continue  until  the  final  team   selections  are  made.  It  is  the  responsibility  of  each  athlete  to  be  prepared  to  start  Monday,   February  19  otherwise,  you  must  contact  your  coach  directly  to  notify  them  of  your  absence.     Each  athlete  should  come  prepared  with  weather  and  sport  appropriate  clothing  and   equipment  (cleats,  gloves,  etc).    It  is  also  imperative  that  you  bring  your  own  LOCK  to  secure   your  personal  valuables.    If  there  is  an  unavoidable  conflict  that  prevents  your  attendance,                           it  is  your  responsibility  to  contact  the  coach  PRIOR  to  you  missing  practice.  

 

HOW  DO  TRY-­‐OUTS  WORK?                                                              

Depending  on  the  number  of  students,  sport  or  weather,  “try-­‐outs”  could  take  3  days  or                 2  weeks.    During  this  evaluation  period,  a  variety  of  tests,  drills,  tools  and  game-­‐like   situations  are  used  to  measure  each  athlete’s  performance  ability  in  the  most  objective  and   measureable  manner  possible.      Each  athlete  will  have  a  minimum  of  2  days  of  try-­‐outs,   provided  they  have  their  physical  and  are  ready  to  go  on  the  1st  day.    No  athlete  is   guaranteed  a  try-­‐out  if  they  fail  to  get  a  physical  and  are  late  trying  out.     If  there  is  an  unavoidable  conflict  that  prevents  your  attendance  on  the  1st  day  of  try-­‐outs,  It   is  your  responsibility  to  contact  the  coach  PRIOR  to  you  missing  practice.      

WHEN  &  WHERE  DO  PRACTICES  TAKE  PLACE?                              

Practices  are  held  Monday-­‐Friday  (occasionally  on  Saturdays)  and  run  from  3:50-­‐ 6:15pm.    The  practice  times  may  vary  based  upon  coach's  discretion.    Sport  specific  questions   and  information  should  be  directed  to  the  coach  below.    MORE  INFO  albemarleathletics.com.

Can  8th  graders  try-­‐out?                                                                      

An  8th  grader  can  only  make  a  JV  team  if  a  9th  or  10th  grader  has  not  been  cut.  

Due  to  try  out  numbers,  not  all  sports  are  able  to  take  8th  graders.    Please  check  with  your   coach  before  you  pay  for  a  physical  or  plan  to  try-­‐out.    Any  8th  grader  that  is  on  a  JV  team   must  be  prepared  to  provide  their  own  transportation  from  their  middle  school  to  AHS  for   practice  away  games  where  an  early  dismissal  is  required.    

When  a  sport  also  offers  a  9TH  grade  team  (B/G  Basketball  &  Football):                                                                 An  8th  grader  can  only  make  the  9th  grade  team  if  a  9th  grader  has  not  been  cut.                                 NOTE:    Since  10th  graders  are  not  eligible  for  a  9th  grade  team,  cutting  a  10th  grader  does  not   impact  keeping  an  8th  grader  on  a  9th  grade  team.
