Battle Ready, Part 2

Judges 6-7

February 4/5, 2012

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) Gideon, who considered himself the least, now had the power of God landing on him. Why? Because he took the action to clean up his own life first. Now he is about to go to war for God! 2) 6:34 “…the Spirit of the LORD came upon…” literally means the Spirit "clothed" Gideon. (Luke 24:49) 3) 6:36-40 If a "fleece" consists of a careful observation and interpretation of God's leading through circumstances, it can be a healthy one. 4) God is abounding in mercy and is slow to anger. God does not rebuke Gideon. He will not rebuke you when you ask for His comfort. He wants you to know that He will be with you. 5) 6:33-35 Note that Gideon assembled the army to fight before he put out the fleece. He is looking for reassurance because he is nervous and scared. 6) Why does God allow times of weakness, even overwhelming odds? It is so that we will be more reliant upon Him. Through that He can show us more of Himself and of His work on our behalf. His strength is made perfect in our weakness.

11) 7:16 By spreading out around the Midianites and by giving each soldier a trumpet, Gideon's troops would create the impression of being a much larger army. 12) You are the fragile clay jar; Jesus is the light within that jar; and your testimony to His greatness is the trumpet call you are asked to sound!   13) This ‘all-surpassing power’ placed within jars of clay speaks of us! We are the fragile human beings which contain the life and light of God! But how does this light shine forth? God’s light and power are seen in us as cracks appear in the body of the jar. Just as Gideon and his army broke their jars to expose the light, so there are times of weakness which cause a ‘cracking’ of our normal strength allowing His greater strength to shine through us. 14) It was prayer that conquered — Gideon, with humility of spirit, sought God. We are told that “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16).

SOME INSTRUCTIONS - ‘NOTHINGS’ o

7) 7:4 God knows our hearts better than we do...The human heart loves to claim credit for any victory. The battle forces will be 450 to1.

o

8) 7:4 God tests us, looking for hearts that are ready. These tests come in the ordinary events of our daily lives, often without our knowing.    9) The 300 may have displayed a greater alertness on their feet, but were probably no more courageous than the 9,700 others who returned home.

o

10) 7:10-12 Encouragement from your God...This passage shows the loving-kindness of God in bringing encouragement when His people are placed in a position of utter weakness. He still does this today!

o

Undertake nothing in our own strength—God addressed Gideon as “a mighty man of valor.” Gideon did not presume that was enough. Draw back from nothing to which we are called—When Gideon was sure that God had called him to the work, he addressed himself to the performance of it. Doubt of nothing where God promises His aid—You have the Promise of God’s presence. God has said, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God: I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.” Take the glory of nothing which God does through you - God is a jealous God, and the ground of his reducing Gideon’s army to three hundred men was to give all the glory to God.
