Dear Colleague: With every step towards improved access to healthcare, we are learning that progress is not measured by how well we define our challenges, but by those whose needs are transformed into hope. For the past forty-six years, the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) has focused on advocacy, health disparities and the underrepresentation of minority leaders in healthcare management. NAHSE is a not-for-profit membership association of minority healthcare executives with a mission to elevate the quality of healthcare services rendered to minorities and underserved communities, and to promote the advancement and development of tomorrow’s minority healthcare leaders.

STUDENT CASE COMPETITION The National Association of Health Services Executives expanded its scholarship program in 1996 to include the Annual Everett V. Fox Student Case Analysis and Presentation Competition, known as the “Case Competition”. The Case Competition is a scholarship program that utilizes the case study methodology of teaching to provide graduate students with an educational experience that enhances their problem analysis and presentation skills. Graduate Programs in Health Administration, Business Administration and Public Health are invited to form a team of 1-3 students. Approximately 20-25 student teams will be given a unique case study and are charged with applying their creativity, knowledge and experience to analyze the diverse and real situations facing the healthcare organization featured in the case. The teams are given the specific facts and raw data related to the case, from which they are expected to reach decisions as outlined in the case assignment. Past cases have been modeled after organizations such as Kaiser Permanente, Mayo Clinic, Catholic Health Initiatives, Trinity Health System, University of Maryland Medical System, HCA, UnitedHealth Group, G. E. Healthcare, and most recently Catholic Health Partners. The teams present their case findings and recommendations before panels of judges representing leaders in the healthcare field, corporate sponsors and academia.

How does the Competition Work? • G raduate Programs in Health Administration and related fields form teams of one to three students. • Three weeks prior to the Competition each team receives the case study to analyze and form recommendations. • During the Competition, each team has twenty (20) minutes to present their analysis and recommendations, which is followed by a ten (10) minute questions and answer period. • Presentations are made before a panel of judges representing leaders in the health care field, corporate sponsors and academia.

The Three Doctors Drs. Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt and George Jenkins, fondly known as The Three Doctors are extraordinary role models for anyone who’s been through any kind of life challenge or major hardship. As teenage boys growing up on the tough inner-city streets of Newark, New Jersey these three kindred spirits made a pact: they would stick together-go to college-graduate-and become doctors. Surrounded by negative influences and having few positive role models made this a not so easy feat. Now many years later, these three men have overcome countless obstacles and proudly bear the subtitle of doctor, serving as the face of health and education for youth and families across our country. Growing up in the streets of Newark, the doctors know first hand the pressures and struggles of life in the inner city and how difficult it can be going at it alone. Determined not to become victims of their environment, the trio stood firm in their mission and together became one of the most remarkable success stories of inspiration, dedication and determination. Today, Dr. Hunt is a Board certified internist at University Medical Center at Princeton and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Jenkins serves as Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry at Columbia University. Dr. Davis is a Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician at several emergency departments in New Jersey. The doctors have additionally authored three inspiring books about their lives: The Pact, for adults, and We Beat the Streets, for children, as well as a third book The Bond, highlighting fatherhood relationships. Dr. Davis also released a new book, Living & Dying in Brick City which provides a rare, real-life glimpse into the inner workings of an urban emergency room, while offering practical health advice for our communities. Drs. Davis, Hunt and Jenkins also find time to give back to the community through their non-profit organization, The Three Doctors Foundation which in 2014 will celebrate its 14th year of offering free health, education and mentoring programs for youth and families in the NY/NJ area.

Hotel Information Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center • 400 Renaissance Drive • Detroit, MI 48243 • 313-568-8000 The Detroit Marriott has reserved a block of rooms at the group rate of $165 single/ double, plus 15% state/local taxes. Conference attendees must make book your reservation by September 17, 2014 to receive the group rate. For reservations, call 877-901-6632. Please request the group rate for NAHSE 2014 Annual Educational Conference. You may also make your reservations on-line at https://resweb.passkey.com/Resweb. do?mode=welcome_ei_new&eventID=11269016. Booking your reservation outside of the NAHSE block of rooms via Internet travel sites has a long-term negative impact on the NAHSE Annual Educational Conference. Hotels have begun to place financial penalties on organizations for each room not used within their negotiated block of rooms thus making it harder for us to negotiate lower rates for our attendees in the future. By filling the block of reduced rate rooms that NAHSE has negotiated, we are able to meet our contractual hotel obligations. We are then able to use this data as a strong negotiation tool to keep our rates for attendees low year after year. We appreciate your support of NAHSE by booking hotel rooms within our official block.

CASE COMPETITION STUDENT RATES A limited room block is available at a special room rate of $100, plus 15% state/local taxes per room (single through quad occupancy) for Case Competition participants ONLY! Case Competition participants should reserve rooms at the student rate directly with Brian Parker at [email protected] or 407-297-8936, the hotel will not honor the discounted rate if you contact them directly.

8

CUT-OFF DATE/DEPOSIT NAHSE’S group rate is available until Wednesday, September 17, 2014 or until the NAHSE room block is filled, whichever comes first. We strongly recommend making your reservations early. All reservations must be guaranteed with a major credit card. Credit cards at the time of reservation are to only to hold the reservation not for a deposit.

CANCELLATION POLICY All reservations not cancelled by 6:00 p.m. EST the day of arrival, will be charged a no show fee of one night room and tax to the individual credit card given at the time of reservation.
