! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OATAG Announces 2014 Young Scholars Award
! Beaverton, Oregon — The Oregon Association for Talented and Gifted (OATAG) is pleased to recognize Daniel Wenger of Vale, Oregon as the recipient of the 2014 OATAG Young Scholars Award. Daniel, who is currently in the eighth grade at Vale Middle School, was selected for this honor due to his strong academic and intellectual ability as well as his values of service, leadership, and citizenship. The OATAG Young Scholars Award (YSA) replaces the now-defunct NAGC-Nicholas Green Award in seeking to identify talented and gifted (TAG) students who have demonstrated exemplary ability. Funded by private donations and administered by the Oregon Association for Talented and Gifted, the YSA focuses on TAG students who use their abilities to help others.
Daniel exceeds in all areas.
As a child, he participated in a
dual-language immersion program, which helped him become fluent in Spanish.
In addition, he scored at or above the 98th or 99th
percentile in all areas of math, reading, and intellectual ability.
He serves his school as webmaster for the school’s
athletics program, where he is an active participant in various sports, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
In his spare time, Daniel
volunteers at Head Start, coordinates various assemblies and athletic programs for his school, is a gifted actor and a star player for his basketball team. Daniel was nominated by his teacher, Angela Lattin, of Vale Middle School.
According to her, “Daniel is a model talented
and gifted student that has challenged my inner core as an educator; his abilities far surpass that of any TAG student I have had the pleasure of teaching….
Daniel is a stand-out
candidate for the OATAG Young Scholars Award.” As the recipient of this award, Daniel will receive up to a $500 scholarship toward the summer program of his choice.
He and his
parents will also receive complimentary admission to the 2014 OATAG Conference, where he can choose to participate in a Paths to Scholarship™ Workshop for teens or two workshops provided in collaboration with Saturday Academy. In addition, Daniel will
receive a one-year Gold-level membership to the Oregon Association for Talented and Gifted. Two runners-up were also selected.
Neha Mishra of Portland,
Oregon and Jessica Bedolla-Yépez of Salem, Oregon were chosen as runners-up due to their academic and intellectual ability, as well as their service to others.
Both Neha and Jessica will
receive complimentary admission to the 2014 Conference, where they can also choose between Paths to Scholarship™ or Saturday Academy Workshops. OATAG wishes to extend its admiration and appreciation to all of the students who were nominated for this year’s award.
Surely
the nominees’ high level of ability demonstrates the strength of Oregon’s talented and gifted students.
