Emma, who came highly recommended by teachers and administrators, is in the eighth grade at Newport Middle School. She was selected for this honor based on her efforts to serve and support others with her unique gifts and talents. Emma participates in student leadership, sports, choir and Gear Up. Additionally, she demonstrates grit and determination while showing compassion and friendship to all. Based on these attributes and the numerous letters of recommend that accompanied her nomination, the selection committee unanimously chose Emma for this distinction. This is the fifth year that OATAG has provided the Young Scholars Award (YSA) to TAG students who have demonstrated exemplary ability while using their abilities to help others. Funded by private donations, the program is open to students in grades 4 through 8 who have achieved excellence in one of the following areas: leadership, visual/performing arts, or academic achievement. A student may be recommended by a teacher, parent, or community leader. In addition to the award certificate and trophy, Emma will receive a scholarship for up to $500 toward the summer camp or academic program of her choice. Two runners up were also selected. Addyson Lynn of Hazeldale Elementary received the first runner-up award and Luke Donaldson of Coquille Junior High School received the second runner-up award. All of the applicants for this year’s award were highly regarded by their teachers, parents and peers and stand as examples for others.
