January 4/5, 2014 Matthew 28:16-20
FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) Jesus glorified the Father by accomplishing His mission (John 17:3). 2) The reason Jesus allows His church to remain on earth is to seek and to save the lost. 3) 28:16 The eleven disciples missed the blessing of seeing Jesus in the garden at His resurrection because they were not there, they were not available. Now the eleven were where Jesus wanted them; consequently, they received His Great Commission and His great promise. 4) 28:16 Faithful discipleship always begins with simply being available, putting all your preconceptions aside. 5) 28:17 Matthew’s straightforward honesty testifies to the integrity of God’s Word. 6) 28:18 In that moment, all uncertainty was erased…they were in the presence of the living God.
12) 28:19-20a Three specific requirements Jesus gave for making disciples: 1. Go 2. Baptize 3. Teach 13) 28:20a Every Christian is not gifted as a teacher, but every Christian must be committed to promoting the ministry of teaching God’s Word. 14) 28:20b Were it not for this encouragement, no one possessing reason would presume to undertake the task given. GREEK WORDS Exousia (ex-oo-see'-ah)—privilege, force, capacity, freedom, or [concrete] magistrate, potentate :- authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength Mathēteuō (math-ayt-yoo'-o)—to become a pupil; transitive to disciple, enroll as scholar :- be disciple Idou—(behold/lo); interjection frequently used in New Testament something of special importance Egō eimi—(I am); emphatic form: “I Myself am,” calls special attention to a fact
7) 28:18 The sovereign authority of Jesus is not only absolute, it is universal. 8) 28:18 Jesus established His absolute authority first; otherwise what came next would have seemed impossible for followers of Christ to fulfill. 9) 28:19 Many treat this command as optional or think it only applies to people in occupational ministry. 10) 28:19 The clear term Jesus uses is to “make disciples:” • The true follower of Jesus is a disciple, a person who has submitted himself whatever that may mean or demand. • The supreme command is for those who are His disciples to become His instruments for making disciples. 11)
