ROMANS – PART 55 Romans 8:24-27 Mark Kring, Senior Pastor January 13 & 14, 2018
1. 8:26-27 This description of the Holy Spirit’s role is one of the most intimate glimpses we have of the inner workings of the Godhead. 2. 8:26 Suffering can and does leave us confused about the purposes of God and leaves us groaning for God’s ultimate day of restoration. 3. 8:26 It is not that the Spirit helps occasionally when Christians are weak; our constant state is one of weakness, so the Spirit continually helps us. 4. 8:26 Paul does not say that the Spirit removes our weakness; it is still there, and we live our whole life in conditions of weakness. 5. 8:26 Weakness is not sin. 6. 8:26 Because of our imperfect views, our finite minds, and our spiritual limitations, we often pray for what we want, based on circumstance (Luke 9:54). 7. 8:26 The need to pray for the will of God in the midst of the circumstance is preeminent. 8. 8:26 Even if we do not know what God’s will is, the Holy Spirit intercedes and brings the issue before the Father, even if we pray about it unwisely. 9. 8:26 Common reasons we do not go to God in prayer: We think He is not interested. We are afraid of what the answer might be. We struggle with giving consistent attention to the need. We are aware of our own sin.
10. 8:27 The Spirit’s will and the Father’s will are identical, because God is one. 11. 8:27 This is a remarkable statement about the omniscience and the intimacy within the Trinity: Jesus continually intercedes for us in God’s presence (Hebrews 7:25). The Holy Spirit continually intercedes on our behalf; He know our needs before we even know them. 12. 8:27 The Spirit does more than groan; He prays for the will of God to be accomplished (1 Corinthians 2:11). 13. 8:26-27 God the Spirit prays to God the Father for you, in accordance with the will of God.
