"When conceptualising the trophy for Best Field Study of the MBA program, as well as the Leadership Award of the BML program presented by the University of the Free State, we tried to create something that had weight and significance while simultaneously demonstrating craftmanship and the latest manufacturing technologies." Introduction The University of the Free State Business School recognises outstanding achievement across its programmes once a year. Z2A Village designed a trophy to acknowledge the student with the best MBA field study as well as the student demonstrating the best leadership qualities during the BML programme.
CLIENT University of the Free State Business School
Objectives Our goal was to create a trophy that signified a longterm achievement, something with weight and significance while simultaneously demonstrating craftmanship and the latest manufacturing technologies.
PROJECT MBA and BML trophies
CATEGORY Design and manufacturing
Concept We decided to manufacture a trophy consisting of a solid aluminium cube, 85mm (MBA) and 70mm (BML) resting on a 3D printed base so that the top and bottom points of the cube are exactly vertically aligned.
Process Firstly, the aluminium cube was manufactured using waterjet technology, cutting a large piece of aluminium into the exact cubes required. Secondly, we drafted a concept base for the trophy that was converted into a CAD representation by the Product Development Technology Station at CUT. Satisfied with the design, the trophy base was printed using graphene - a nylon that's treated after manufacturing to represent graphite. Results The University of the Free State Business School received the trophies positively and is now permanently displaying them in their foyer area. The first receivers of the respective awards were extremely impressed with the weight of the solid aluminium cubes and the impression holding the trophies made on them while receiving their awards during the school's prize giving.
