What is the CMDB? ● The Configuration Management Database (CMDB) is a collection of Configuration Items (CIs) that comprise a service offering.
Improve CMDB Data Quality and Depth Mapping ITS Services to Supporting Infrastructure
● The CMDB also stores relationship and dependency data to show connections between CIs.
● The CMDB provides a common reference for IT staff across teams and departments as well as business stakeholders.
● Improve data accuracy ○ Establish CI age threshold ○ Increase discovery frequency ● Increase level of detail ○ Import support group and owner for server CIs ○ Include data source for federated data ● Define data ownership roles ○ Review data maintenance expectations with owners ● Implement scheduled audits ○ Verify CMDB data when discovery thresholds are breached
Why use a CMDB? ● A detailed and accurate inventory of infrastructure components and their relationships supports the Service Management processes of Incident, Problem, and Change.
