Pacesetters Athletic Club Issue #13: January 2016
Foreword by President 2015 Reflections & Moving Forward in 2016 Today is New Year’s Day and I woke up at my usual time of 5.30am. I usually start working on my emails each morning at 6.00am but I decided to reflect on PAC after leading the club for 18 months, during which time I went through some re-learning on the job and discovered realistic expectations from my team and the members. My conclusion is that we need to go back to basics on why this club was formed. Our club charges an annual membership of RM36 for ordinary members and RM18 for senior members (over 60) and youth members (under 18). Today RM36 will not enable you to register for any 10km race! The last increase was in 2000 (from RM24 to RM36). I was the president then and one member told me that it is a 50% increase! He was arithmetically correct. The good news is we have no intention to propose any increase in membership fees as we don’t need to. We have in the last one year culled all our major recurring overheads, namely office rental and related utilities and salaries which were almost RM4,000 per month when I took charge in April 2014. The club has managed to operate without an office, only a storeroom for our items with a monthly rental of RM200. Needless to say, the Exco have to share in the administrative work. We have a virtual office that leverages on modern communications like Whatsapp group. This savings are major and the immediate benefit is that club does not need to seek out third party events to pay its overheads. We can now focus on members’ activities. A case in point is the recent trip to Sekinchan cum breakfast run. We paid for the breakfast for our members and the guests paid a token sum of RM5 each. Such activities are affordable, easy for the EXCO to manage and enjoyable for members. This is important given the upward pressure in the cost of living that we have faced last year and which will be even stronger in 2016. We are targeting to organize 4 to 6 breakfast runs in a year, hopefully with 3 outside of Kuala Lumpur. The next confirmed event is a trip to Sungei Lembing (near Kuantan) organized jointly by our Kuantan Area Group and the Exco. Please see details in this issue and join us. Our Allianz Pacesetters 4 x 3km held on 17 October 2015 was reasonably successful, meeting most of the objectives set out. We raised RM51,000 for the Kiwanis Down Syndrome 1|Page
Issue #13: January 2016 Foundation in a difficult year. A total of 175 teams took part. We are working towards having the event earlier this year. After a long development stage and moth-balling the project for a few months, we finally turned on the members’ portal on 22 December 2015. This is a significant milestone for the club as we are the first running club in the country with an online members’ portal. Please see details in a separate article in this issue. After one week, so far so good and hopefully we can cruise through with minimum teething problems. One member actually thought it was a scam when he received the notice to make payments online! This portal will take care of our back office administration processes that the club has struggled on for several years, when our membership increased significantly. It will eliminate the need to manually receive cash which no one wishes to handle. This portal was jointly developed with Hivelocity Events Sdn Bhd. We foresee other clubs implementing their own portals in due course. We like to thank our former treasurer, Mr Chong Ting Chow who spearheaded this initiative. It took about 7 months to firm up all the nitty gritty of the programing. Another development is on the club’s revised constitution. The amendments have been approved by the Sports Commissioner and final document should be approved in due course. It should be ready for our next AGM, tentatively scheduled on 23 April 2016. VP1, Munning has done a lot of work on this. This year, we have also resolved the three long outstanding event accounts with WOS World of Sports (M) Sdn Bhd that went back to 2012. With this settlement, our balance sheet is now cleaned up with no material amounts owing to any third parties. We will give a more detailed report on this at the coming AGM. We have more or less completed our transformation, put our house in order and put the club back on the path we believe it should be, focused on members’ activities. We aim to organise more members’ activities in 2016 and we look forward to your support, both in participation and also helping out one way or the other. We will rebuild the spirit of the club and set the pace in the recreational running scene.

Club’s Breakfast Run among Paddy Fields – by Michael Gan Our members took their families for a fun run cum holiday in Sekinchan last Sunday. The club wishes to thank the headmaster of SRJK (C) Yoke Kuan, Mr Lee, for graciously allowing us to have our breakfast in the school canteen. Blue Cap Abbvie Relay Run for Prostate Cancer – by Goh Jing Jing On 29 November 2015, Blue Cap Movement held its first annual Blue Cap Relay Run and Health Carnival at University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. The main purpose of the run was to promote men's health and to raise funds in support of prostate cancer treatment. There were six categories in the 3 x 3 km relay run which were Open, Mixed Women, Mixed 55, The 50s, Cancer survivor and Family Run. Our club sent two teams and both did very well to get on the podium. The Men Open team emerged as 1st runner up while the Mixed Team emerged as Champion. Congratulations! Special thanks to Ronnie See, the club's Racing Team Men's Captain for selecting and organising the teams.

Newbie Column – Welcome to PAC! Monica Tan, Mid 30s, Johor Bahru I started running about 2 years ago. I did my first 10k at Great Eastern run in Johor Bahru in Dec 2013 and my first half marathon in May 2014 at the Sundown Singapore. I was coaxed into doing my full Marathon, the Penang Bridge International Marathon, and the same year by a friend who told me “the registration fee was only an additional RM10 & I get an extra finishing T-Shirt”. The gullible me bought the rational and did my first full marathon in excruciating 7 hours. Nevertheless I enjoyed the experience. I always loved swimming and was introduced to open water swimming last year. I joined the Kapas Marang Swimathon which is a 6.5km swim from Pulau Kapas to Marang, Terenganu to challenge myself. I thought to myself, "If I could already run and swim, why not cycle as well?" Hence I bought my bicycle in Oct 2014 but only started cycling regularly in the middle of this year. Swimming, cycling and running helps me to relax and be more positive towards life. It is a great way to make new friends. I knew very few people in KL as I just relocated here in June this year. These activities have made me new friends like the runners from Saturday Beginners Group. Losing weight doing all these activities is also a bonus. I have lost about 13kgs and I’m a lot leaner since I started 2 years ago, so I feel less guilty eating my favourite spicy foods & mee rebus Johor. I get a sense of euphoria when I cross the finishing line. The feeling is more intense in tougher events, like a full marathon or half ironman. I am not a fast runner nor cyclist so I cannot compete on speed. Instead, I like to do endurance sports because this is where mental power overcomes everything. In sports, my inspiration is Sister Madonna Buder. She is currently the record holder for the oldest woman to complete a full Ironman race. She is a late starter, started running only at the age of 48 and triathlon at the age of 52. Despite many challenges, she was persistent & never gave up pursuing her dream. She is a classic example of 'never too old & never too late' to start something.

PAC Membership Portal– By Chan Kin Hou After months of delay due to technical reasons, the PAC Membership Portal finally went live on 22 December 2015. In the past, managing the membership roster of a thousand members has been a manual and laborious task between the secretariat and the treasury, sending out reminders, keeping track of payments into our bank account, updating members’ records, etc. There were also two membership renewal cycles each year, one at the end of June and the other end of December. Hence the manual renewal process was done twice a year. In 2014, the PAC Exco decided to take the plunge into the age of IT, and created an online portal for members to self-manage their membership and fees payment. This is an initiative from the Strategic Plan 2014-19. Mr. Chong Ting Chow, the treasurer at the time, together with the appointed software developer did a fine job building the portal. It was designed with simplicity in mind for the members, so that one does not have to be an IT expert to use it. We do, however, require members to have an email address and a credit card – two things you should already have if you regularly participate in run events. The portal is hosted on myraceonline.com server. The Exco also decided to consolidate the two annual renewal cycles into one at the end of every December. Hence for those whose membership expires in June, your renewal fees calculated by the portal will include an additional six months of fees so that your expiry will now be re-aligned to the end of December. With the launch of the membership portal, a major administrative activity is now being automated. The Exco can now focus more time and energy into organising meaningful activities for our members. We hope members will continue to support and participate in these activities and bring friends and family along. The membership portal can be accessed at http://pacesetters.myraceonline.com using your PAC no. as ID and the last four digits of your IC/Passport no. as Password. You should verify your particulars immediately and change your password after the first time login. Should you need any assistance, please email to
[email protected] with the following Subject line: “[PAC Portal] – Your subject title” (without quotes) The portal allows you to view and edit your profile, check your membership status, change login password and renew your membership via online payment. For more information on the portal, please download the User’s Guide at http://bit.ly/PAC-PortalUG.
