Student Biographies Isaiah Albert-Stein

piano Isaiah is a 9th grade student at William Allen High School. He has been studying piano at CMS with Dr. David Saturen for seven years and trumpet with Matthew Nieznay for three years. He was previously a member of the Impressions Jazz and Top 40 Ensembles at CMS, and is a member of the William Allen High School Marching Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Band. Isaiah is also a member of Allen’s stage crew and varsity swim team.

Aidan Arakkal

piano Aidan is 10 years old and in 4th grade at Willow Lane Elementary. He has been studying piano for one and a half years and is excited that he has learned to play this beautiful music with his teacher, Dr. Holly Roadfeldt. He enjoys spending time with his brother, sister, mom, and dad.

Madison Betancourt

piano Madison is a freshman instrumental major at Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts. She has been studying with Rebekah Ruth at CMS for about two and a half years. Aside from piano, she enjoys learning to play the bass and ukulele on her own. Outside of music, she enjoys watching films and learning about science and history.

Carolyn Boulay soprano

Carolyn is a senior at Salisbury High School and next year will attend New York University to study classical voice and opera. She has studied voice at CMS for over six years, and “with the help of my wonderful teacher (Rebekah Graver), (I) have been afforded many opportunities to perform both at CMS and throughout the Valley.” Carolyn’s other interests include reading, traveling, knitting, and theatre. She credits her fantastic support system for helping her accomplish so much, including: National Honors Society, National Merit Commendation, Vocal Merit Scholarships, leading roles in SHS musicals, and SHS Debate. “I am so grateful for my time at CMS, and believe I have been well prepared to go into the world and achieve my goals.”

Community Music School - Gala Recital 2016 Jacob Brown

saxophone Jacob is a freshman at Emmaus High School. He has been playing saxophone for five years and has been studying for three years with Cliff Tracy at CMS. He also has been playing clarinet for three years and piano for five years. He plays saxophone in the Emmaus High School Jazz Band, and has enjoyed playing in the Lower Macungie Middle School pit orchestra for the past four years.

Jeremy Budihardjo

piano Jeremy is 11 years old and in 5th grade. He has played piano for about three years and cello for two years. He currently studies at CMS with Carole Houghton. One of his recent accomplishments is being selected to play in the PMEA All Stars Orchestra. He also likes to play soccer.

Shriya Chitta

violin Shriya is 8 years old and in 3rd grade at Hopewell Elementary School in the Southern Lehigh School District. She has been studying violin at CMS with Linda Kistler for one and a half years. She is a Brownie in Girl Scouts and enjoys going on trips with her troop. She recently became a blue belt in karate and enjoys biking, tennis, swimming, and participating in triathlons. She also enjoys reading. Her favorite books are Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Kane Chronicles, and Physics and Chemistry books. In her free time, she enjoys photography, flying kites, watching TV, doing word searches and puzzles, and squishing her little brother’s cheeks.

Nicholas Golovanov

clarinet Nicholas is 12 years old and attends middle school in the Parkland School District. This is only his third year at CMS - yet with all the progress he has made with his excellent teacher (Cliff Tracy), he feels as though he has been here much longer. Other than studying clarinet, he has been playing the piano for almost seven years. In the future, he hopes to be a successful musician, architect, or even a politician. His other hobbies include playing tennis, running, playing basketball, writing, following the news and politics, and traveling.

Student Biographies Julianna Hahn

piano Julianna is 11 years old and in 5th grade at St. Joseph the Worker School in Orefield. She has been studying piano for six years at CMS with Rebekah Ruth. She is also a Girl Scout, plays softball, and dances. She enjoys reading, art, music, math, and playing with her younger brother, Charlie.

Talitha Harry

piano Talitha is a student at Commonwealth Connections Academy. She has been on the Honor Roll several times and enjoys studying English and Math. She has studied piano for nine years and has been a student at CMS with Dr. Holly Roadfeldt since May of 2015. She enjoys baking, drawing, reading, and playing the piano.

Prathysha Kothare

piano Prathysha is in 7th grade at Orefield Middle School (OMS) and has been studying piano since she was three years old. She currently studies piano with Rebekah Ruth at CMS. Besides piano, she also plays alto saxophone with the OMS 7th/8th Grade Band and Jazz Band. She also sings and plays piano with the OMS 7th Grade Chorus. Her academic accomplishments this year include first place at the Delaware Science Fair competition, one of six regional Exploravision Science competition winning teams (out of 5,000 projects in North America), and a nomination to Broadcom Masters. Prathysha aspires to be a doctor, and to continue pursuing her love of music as a lifelong hobby.

Valmiki Kothare piano

Valmiki is in 9th grade at Parkland High School. He has been studying piano since he was four years old, first at home with his dad, and then at CMS, where he now studies with Rebekah Ruth. Besides piano, he also plays alto saxophone in the PHS Band. In addition to music, Valmiki enjoys playing soccer. In school, his favorite subjects are Math and Science. In 2016, he took his first engineering courses and was reassured of his desire to become an engineer, and to continue pursuing his love of music and soccer as lifelong hobbies.

Community Music School - Gala Recital 2016 Nandini Kulkarni

piano Nandini is 14 years old and in 8th grade at Springhouse Middle School in the Parkland School District. She has studied piano with Rebekah Ruth at CMS for three years and performed in the 2015 Gala Recital. She also enjoys hip-hop dance and has studied with Patricia Bostick for three years. In her free time, she loves to listen to music and spend time with her friends.

Nathania Lopez

violin Nathania is a 5th grade student and lives in Bethlehem. She has been studying violin with Shane Barker at CMS for one year. This is her first appearance in the Gala Recital. Congratulations!

Abigail Manwiller

soprano Abigail is a recent graduate of Muhlenberg High School and has been studying at CMS Reading with Dail Richie since March 2015. She also enjoys playing piano, xylophone, and bass guitar. She sings in her school choirs, including Mixed Chorus, Concert Chorus, and Camerata. She recently played Cosette in her high school’s production of Les Misérables and plans to further her education as a theatre major at DeSales University in the fall.

Liam Murray

piano Liam is a 16 year old sophomore at Liberty High School in Bethlehem. He moved to Bethlehem from West Virginia when he was six years old and began taking piano lessons shortly thereafter. He has been studying piano with Dr. David Saturen at CMS for four years. In addition to piano, he enjoys fencing.

Student Biographies Sanaiya O’Neal

piano Sanaiya is currently a 4th grade student at Wescosville Elementary School. She has been studying the piano for five years, since November 2015 with Rachel Hosterman at CMS, and has participated in numerous recitals. She has participated in the Achievement Awards Auditions at Lehigh Valley Music Teachers Association in 2014, the National Piano Playing auditions in 2015, and is a member of the National Fraternity of Student Musicians of the American College of Musicians. She has also studied dance for five years, including ballet, tap, and jazz and is also enrolled in ARMETTA School for Gymnastics. She likes to ride her bike, play Monopoly, play with her dolls, color, listen and learn different genres of music, and loves to swim.

Nicole Powers mezzo-soprano

Nicole is a mezzo-soprano entering her junior year in Fleetwood Area High School in the fall. She studies voice at CMS Reading with Dail Richie and is a member of the Berks Youth Chorus Mastersingers. Besides singing, Nicole plays several instruments, including the piano. Nicole also studies composition and has written for string quartet, chorus, and solo piano.

Nicholas Rode

saxophone Nicholas is 13 years old and is in the 8th grade at Springhouse Middle School, where he plays with both the concert & jazz bands. Nick started playing saxophone in the 4th grade and has been in CMS Impressions for three years. This year, Nicholas was selected to go to the PMEA District Band, and he won Best Reed Soloist at the Broughal Middle School Jazz Festival. Nick is an active Boy Scout, and this summer he will be working as a counselor at Camp Trexler in the Poconos. Nicholas is also an avid runner and is a member of Springhouse’s Cross Country Team.

Julie Sizer

piano Julie is in 8th grade at Salisbury Middle School and has studied piano at CMS with Ruth Maletz for eight years. She is also involved in music at school, where she plays mallets in both concert band and marching band, keyboard in jazz band, and sings in the chorus.

Community Music School - Gala Recital 2016 Michael Smith piano

Michael is a 9th grade student at Whitehall High School and has studied piano with Rebekah Ruth at CMS for five years. He participates in the WHS concert band, jazz band, and sometimes accompanies the WHS choir or smaller choral groups. He is also in two bands outside school - the rock band Solid Water and the praise band At the Cross. Some of his other hobbies include Tae Kwon Do, as well as building computers and video games.

Hanae Takahashi

violin Hanae is 10 years old and is a 4th grade student at Cetronia Elementary School. She has studied violin at CMS for two years, currently with Shane Barker. She also enjoys drawing, singing, and studying Japanese.

Hanae is visiting Japan for the summer, so she is not able to perfrom in today’s recital; however, we still congratulate her on a job well done!

Megumi Takahashi

flute Megumi is in 8th grade and has been studying flute for two years. She studies with Cliff Tracy at CMS and is also a member of CMS Impressions Jazz Ensemble. She is grateful to be a part of CMS. Other than music, some of her hobbies include drawing, painting, and writing.

Isabel Torres-Hernandez

piano Isabel is 9 years old and in 3rd grade at St. John Vianney School. She studies with Rebekah Ruth at CMS. Other than music, she enjoys arts and spending time with her pets - a guinea pig named Violet, and two birds named Sally and Dan.

Mualla Ulas

piano Mualla (Mia) is a junior at Whitehall High School. She was born in Istanbul, where she took piano lessons from a member of the Kent Orchestra for two years. When she moved to the U.S. at the age of nine, she continued practicing piano and came to CMS in September of 2015. She studies jazz piano with Dr. David Saturen; she credits him with introducing her to jazz and teaching her how to compose her own jazz piece entitled “Spring Hop.” Since the age of seven, she has performed in a total of four recitals and plays at community gatherings, weddings, and at a senior home, where she volunteers. Music has always been a form of expression, confidence, and inspiration for her. She is also interested in poetry and has written poetic arrangements since the time she could hold a pen. Her recent poem, “The Waters of Bosporus Lie in Childhood,” was selected as First Place recipient by the Lehigh Valley Press in April. “I see language, whether it is musical or linguistic, as a big part of me and I appreciate those who helped me acquire it. The Gala Recital is a perfect opportunity for sharing such creativity, and I thank everyone for making such a wonderful opportunity possible.”

Chloe Wilcox

violin Chloe is in 9th grade at Liberty High School, where she plays violin and flute/piccolo in the orchestra and band. She has studied violin with Linda Kistler at CMS for four years. This is her second appearance in a Gala Recital.

Stephen Wroge

violin Stephen is in 10th grade at Allentown Central Catholic High School, where he has been on the honor roll both semesters this year. He has been playing the violin for five years and studying at CMS with Linda Kistler for two years. He also participates in soccer, wrestling, and lacrosse.

Julia Young

piano & trumpet Julia is in 9th grade at Parkland High School. She is an honors student and participates in concert band, marching band, and jazz band. Julia has been taking lessons at CMS for four years. She currently studies piano with Dr. Holly Roadfeldt and trumpet with Matthew Nieznay. She is an avid reader and also enjoys drawing and creative writing.
