Create a personal (not our school email) email account (preferably a gmail account with an adult/professional sounding name) that you will check EVERY DAY. Missing deadlines due to not checking email is not an excuse colleges tolerate.

Private schools and out of state schools have very different deadlines and expectations so check those specific school websites for information regarding the process to apply to those schools.

You Need to Sell Yourself!!! 

Mistakes on your application are UNACCEPTABLE! This is a professional document.



Make sure you explain what exactly YOU did, not just a summary of the group/organization.



Spend time getting help on editing your personal statements and continue to rewrite until they are great!



Make sure your personal insight responses explain who YOU are…another person or event may have a huge influence on you and that is okay to share…briefly…but then return the focus to YOU and make sure they get to know YOU and why they should let YOU in to their school.



SHOCKING!!! 1. UC San Diego and San Diego State are TOP NOTCH schools – don’t take them for granted! 2. Diversify your applications – don’t put all your eggs in one basket (or just two or three). 3. Don’t accept admission to a school without visiting it – what if it is not a good fit?!?! 4. Don’t accept admission to a school that doesn’t have a major you are interested in! 5. Your CSU/UC GPA is NOT listed on your transcript – you must calculate it using only A-G 10th & 11th grade class grades (including summer school after 9th, 10th and 11th grades). 6. Mistakes on your application can result in rejection or cancellation after admission! We have students rejected each year because they don’t fill it all out correctly. 7. Appeal rates are terrible! Last year UCSD changed decisions on only 18 of 585 appeals.

Trade/Technical Schools Explore all options!!!   

These are often private schools, but there are public school options.

Many of the programs offered at these schools are offered at community colleges as well.

Check with professionals in the industry for honest recommendations/evaluations of programs.

Senior Brag Packet – Due September 30!!! 1. This is a graduation requirement for ALL students. 2. It needs to be submitted to the WHHS Counseling Google Classroom – access code: 52fjau 3. The authorization signature page (handed out in class) is due by September 30 as well.

Letters of Recommendation 

Always make your request for a letter of recommendation in person (not via email).



Always ask at least 2 weeks in advance.



Be wise as to whom you ask to write you a letter of recommendation.

Counselors will also require: 1. Brag Packet to be complete first 2. Your FERPA rights to be waived ***The Common App requires a counselor rec!

Financial Aid ***Do NOT complete the FAFSA before October 1, 2016!!!*** We will be in Senior classes on September 22/23 to present more information regarding Financial Aid.
