August 15, 2017 Dear WDE Parent/Guardian (s): The safety of your child is our top priority at WDE. In consultation with the traffic division officers of the Sumter Police Department, we have significantly revised our arrival and dismissal procedures that we will believe improve the overall level of efficiency and safety of our students. In the safety interests of all students, we are asking that everyone go through the car drop-off/pick-up area where quality supervision is provided as outlined below. With significantly increased supervision in our three arrival/dismissal areas, these revised procedures will be in effect on the first day of school.
Walkers are asked to enter in the mornings and exit in the afternoons through the Willow Drive designated crossing guard points. Bus riders will enter and exit campus from the Miller Road parking loop. It is against state law for any other traffic to utilize the same location as buses do. All PK, K, 1st, and 2nd grade students and siblings of those students should be dropped off and picked up by entering the side drive-thru by turning left only from Bynum to Willow Drive. Please do not attempt to enter the drive-thru by turning right from Willow Drive. Supervising staff members will escort students to their car. Please do not get out of your car. All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students should be dropped off and picked up alongside the current Willow Drive street-side parking, which is being converted to a side drive-thru. Cars should only enter this drive-thru by turning right off of Broad Street onto Willow Drive. When entering, pull all the way forward to the first white bumper without blocking the parking lot exit. If you are arriving at the exit point, please form a double-stacked lane. Kindly follow the cones and adhere to the barricades. Supervising staff members will escort students to their car. Please do not get out of your car. If you need to enter the building, there are reserved visitor parking spots in the front parking lot. Any student arriving at or after 7:30 am must be escorted into the building by a parent/guardian and signed in with our attendance clerk. Officers with the Sumter Police Department will be on-site for the first two weeks of school to assist in the strict implementation of these procedures.
On the reverse side, you will find a map that explains the above procedures. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation as we continually aim to make the school environment a safer place for all. We welcome your feedback – please do not hesitate to contact me via phone (774-5796, ext. 107), email (

Trevor T. Ivey, NBCT; Principal
