Program Itinerary

Dear Students,

Saturday, June 9 Depart Austin to Granada

¡Bienvenidos a España! Surrounded by the Sierra Nevada mountains, revered for its stunning Alhambra palace, and enshrined in medieval history, Granada will be your home for three weeks in Spain. Whether experiencing the passion of a Flamenco performance or relaxing in Arabic baths, the learning that you will gain from this experience is unlike any that you will get elsewhere. A typical day will consist of attending class for two hours, and breaking for lunch and siesta. Excursions will serve as our lab for “Conversational Spanish”, as well as enable you to learn about the rich history and cultural evolution of the Andalusian region. Classroom time will serve as your lab and preparation for excursions during which you’ll use the Spanish you learn daily. You will have ample study time in the afternoon, evening, or both. In conversations with other university students during the “Globe Language Exchange”, and in daily conversations, what you have learned in the classroom will be brought to life. A day trip to Málaga, on the Mediterranean coast, to visit the Picasso Museum, going to Nerja beach and eating paella, enjoying the Music and Dance Festival, learning about Spanish cuisine, eating tapas at a Flamenco performance in white-washed caves, sipping tea in an Arabic tea house and touring the Alhambra Palace and gardens, will immerse you in Spanish culture and history. Assignments that are woven into daily activities, will not only deepen your linguistic and cultural knowledge, but also broaden your worldview. This expanded worldview will change you in a way that you will appreciate for the rest of your life! Thank you for considering the program. I look forward to learning with you!
