MATERIAL SCIENCE (Common to Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering and Mechatronics) Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70 Answer any Five questions All question carry equal marks --1.a) Discuss various types of binding forces that exist in crystalline structures. b) Show that the packing fraction in FCC lattice is 0.74. c) Describe the characteristics of metallic bond. Define Burger’s vector and illustrate it on the sketch of edge dislocations. Draw neat sketches and illustrate edge and screw dislocations. Explain the significance of dislocations in the plastic deformation of metals.

Describe the mechanism involved in slip, twinning and fracture with the help of neat sketches in single crystals. Compare and contrast cold working and hot working.

Describe creep phenomena. How does the temperature affect the creep? How do you improve the creep resistance. Explain the salient features of fatigue fracture. Draw S-N curve for steel and Aluminum. Explain the effect of metallurgical variables on fatigue.
