SYNOPSIS

BRIEF DESCRIPTION Acquire knowledge about the functioning of main International Economic Organizations and analyze, from a theoretical and practical perspective, the implications and effects of their actions, decisions and policies on various countries and the international economy as a whole.
PRE-REQUISITES Knowledge of World and International Economics as contained in the Study Plan of previous semesters.
OBJECTIVES The main objective of the course on International Economic Organization is the study and analysis of the international economy and its institutional organization. The main blocs of activity of the course are the study of International Monetary and Financial Institutions, institutions whose main focus is trade, development, international cooperation and the regional economic integration areas. The international economy is continuously evolving and students must keep track of changes taking place since it is precisely the economic space where international organizations and economic agents develop their activities.

LEARNING METHODOLOGY A mixed methodology of teaching and learning will be used in all educational activities with the aim of encouraging students to develop a collaborative and cooperative attitude in the pursuit of knowledge.

MÓDULE I. METHODOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK AND HISTORICAL ORIGINS Theme 1. International Economic Organization (IEO): Objective, research and methodology of study. Theme 2. International economic relations before the II World War. Theme 3. International economic relations after the II World War: the United Nations System and the origin of international economic organizations.
MODULE II. INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC ORGANISATIONS Theme 4. The International Monetary Fund. Main characteristics and evolution of the international monetary and financial system. Theme 5. The World Bank Group, Regional Banks and multilateral development financing.
Faculty of Economics and Business Theme 6. The international trading system: From GATT to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Theme 7. The Organization for economic Cooperation and Development, international cooperation and development aid. Theme 8. Agents and processes in the world economy: multinational corporations and financiarization. Regulatory challenges.
MODULE III. ECONOMIC INTEGRATION PROCESSES Theme 9. International economic integration: characteristics and main integration areas in the world. Theme 10. European economic integration: Main ideas, institutions and European Union policies. Results.
MODULE IV. PRESENT WORLD ECONOMY REGULATION Theme 11. The globalization process and its regulation: economic, political, social and environmental dimensions. Theme 12. Future challenges and proposals for International Economic Organization. A new institutional architecture.

Research papers, debates participation, etc,: 15% of the final Grade. Active participation in classes and seminars: 10% of the final grade Final assessment will only be possible with a minimum of 80% attendance in classes
EVALUATION CRITERIA It is necessary to obtain 3 over 10 points at least in each of the parts above in order to be considered for the weighted average that will lead to the final reslt of the assessment. Around 15 evaluation criteria will make-up the assessment of “other activities” undertaken during this course through the use of Social network platform of the web 2.0/3.0 GNOSS. The final exam will be assessed under specific criteria which will be announced in due course. Continuous assessment in the extraordinary examination: in case one student has failed the ordinary examination, having attended the final exam and participated in the continuous assessment, the mark to be considered as continuous assessment for that extraordinary examination will be the final mark obtained in the ordinary examination.
