Yesterday, the Israelites celebrated the first Yom Kippur also known as the Day of Atonement. This is to be a yearly holiday. Unlike the other holidays, the LORD has given us, this is to be a day of sorrow as we remember the sins we have committed this year. Aaron, the high priest, took off his ornate, colorful outer garments. Then he took a bull and offered it on the bronze altar for the sins of himself and his family. After collecting the bull’s blood in a bowl, Aaron entered the Most Holy Place. There he sprinkled the bull’s blood seven times in front of the Ark of the Covenant.

Then Aaron returned to the courtyard. There his sons had two live goats. He offered one of the goats on the bronze altar. Like he did with the bull, Aaron saved Aaron, the High Priest sprinkling blood in front of the Ark of the Covenant the blood of the goat. What is in the Ark of the Covenant? The Ark of the Covenant is a gold covered wooden box. The lid with two angels on top is called the mercy seat. The LORD told Moses to put three things in the Ark of the Covenant. The stone tables that list the ten commandments were
placed here. This is to remind the Israelites of their agreement with God to follow these rules. Moses also placed a jar of manna. This is to remind us of God’s provision through out our journey in
the wilderness. The third item is Aaron’s rod. This is to remind us to respect God’s leaders.

The High Priest Clothing
Over the white linen trouse rs, coat, belt and cap worn by all priests, the high priest wore a long blue coat. Around its hem was a border of alternating pomegranates and bells. Ov er the blue coat was the colorful ephod. It was made of royal colors (blue, purple and scarlet) and sew ed with gold thread. The breastplate was worn ove r the ephod. There were 12 precious stones on the breastplate: one stone for each of the 12 tri bes attached to the shoulders wit of Israel. It was h gold chains. It was attached to the waist with a blue cord. The high priest wore a turban with a gold plate attached to it. “Holiness to the Lord” wa s engraved on the golden plate.
