7 September 2016 Tena tatou katoa e te whanau Dobar dahn, Nabad, Hola, Ciao, Ni hao, Namaste, Talofa, Bonjour, Χαιρετίσματα, Gruß, Zdravím, Приветствия, สวัสดี, Sawasdee, Konnichiwa, Pozdrowenia, Selamlar Mantra of Innovative Learning Learning anytime, anywhere, any how As reported last week, a group of board members and staff viewed the movie Most Likely to Succeed with board and staff from Thorndon school. The start of thinking about redefining, repurposing, reframing our learning and teaching approach with innovative learning (aka modern learning): “Learning anytime, anywhere, any how.” We’re looking forward to this joint project with Pipitea Thorndon (term 4 2016—term 1 2018). School Visits Learning anytime, anywhere, any how On that note, the Y5-8 teachers are out today observing sound teaching practice at Island Bay and Raroa Intermediate. A litmus test is always students articulating learning, evidence of their independence, student voice and self assessment not to mention testing for student engagement. Collaboration between teams of teachers is critical to the success of any programme, with innovative learning, it’s at the core. This being the case, teacher analysis at the end of observations must inform practice. The junior team Y1-4 is looking forward to their observations at Worser Bay Tuesday 13. Today Ngaio team has observers in their whanau from Houghton Bay. As I walked through Ngaio, one of the students was assisting in a workshop on fractions. From the responses to his questions, it was easy to determine who’d grasped the concept and what misconceptions needed to be sorted.
Rimu Y7-8 Mathematics was the operative word in Rimu as well. Students are Taking Action and lots of it’s on sustainability. Figure 1 below charts the school’s power bills. Five months are projected bills shown with dotted lines. Sean Wipatene noted $808.16 difference between January and February and speculated as to the reason. Seraphine Ruch looked at the average temperature and kilowatts per hour for the first six months and used the results to project usage till the end of the year. Are their assertions and predictions correct? Figure 2 Figure 1

Seraphine’s Fundraising for Sustainability Trust Seraphine Ruch, Year 8, has the following fundraising opportunity that she would like to share with the CQS community. She writes: I am placing a collection box in the office. I am collecting these donations for the Sustainability Trust which will then be spent insulating homes in need of insulation. These are usually homes rented by people living in poverty or people on low income. These houses are filled with mould and this results in cold, damp homes. These houses are also usually over crowded because people can’t afford to rent a whole house so they are forced to share with more people. These people are living in cold, damp overcrowded homes and people living in them are catching colds and are sick. This spreads through the homes quickly which means all the kids get sick and have to go to hospital because they can’t afford any other doctor care. Insulating these homes will keep many families warm through the cold winter months it will also limit the amount of kids being sent to hospital with a cold that could have been stopped if they lived in drier warmer homes. Insulating these homes is the most effective way families can keep their homes warm, save energy and save money. Donations for insulation will keep these families warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
The enviro group and the gardening girls would like to thank Oscar Dawson from Harakeke and his family for donating to the school 10 amazing swan plants! They will make a huge contribution to revamping the CQS gardens.
We have already planted them in the butterfly garden outside the PE shed and they look awesome! Thank you for donating these to regenerate our butterfly garden. The Green Team had already planted seeds from last year’s plants and are currently waiting for them to sprout in the greenhouse, so this donation is very timely! If any kids want to visit them and check to see any butterflies we have planted them by the front gate next to the senior Rimu class.
Thanks again, from Mia Murdoch, Meggy Shepherd and the Garden Girls Inquiry Team in Simu.
