Dear Parents and Foothill Students: The Foothill Staff is committed to providing students with a rich and challenging middle school experience. Foothill courses offer a wide range of interesting, relevant learning opportunities. This booklet contains a listing and description of courses that may be offered to 7th and 8 th graders. Students will choose either 2-year long elective classes or 1-year long elective & 2semester elective classes or 4-semester elective classes. We strongly encourage decision making together as a family. Elective course offerings are based on student sign up, teacher availability and teacher credentialing. Courses may change in duration (i.e. yearlong to semester) or be cancelled based on student interest and staffing. Please take the time to read through the course descriptions and to plan your choices with care. ART DEPARTMENT 3D ART Semester (Posted as Art II 004135) Students will create three dimensional art and sculpture using mediums including ceramic clay, papiermâché or celluclay, and other materials. Sculptural issues such as stability and strength will be explored. Students will learn about depth, space, volume, and surface treatment. Previous experience in art such as Rotation Art in 6th grade or Art class in 7th grade and perspective drawing are essential for student success in this course. Without previous experience, students must have teacher approval. A donation is appreciated to help fund art supplies.

Semester (004110) No prior art experience is necessary. Students will learn basic drawing and painting, using a variety of subjects for inspiration. They will work with a variety of media including pencil, paint, linoleum block print, and papier-mâché. A donation is appreciated to help fund art supplies

DRAMA DEPARTMENT DRAMA I Semester (000510) This is an intermediate drama class for students who like to act or do sound and lighting. Students will be performing two classroom plays for parents during school hours. In the first quarter students will perform the tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. In the second quarter students will perform the comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Students will be introduced to Shakespeare in a fun and new way using cartoon, musical, modern day, as well as Renaissance versions of these plays in film form. There will not be any after school or evening rehearsals or performances. A donation is appreciated to help fund costumes, props and scripts.

IMPROVISATIONAL THEATRE Semester (posted Drama Improv 000515) This is an acting class without dialogue memorization. Students will learn how to create a character using mime and voice (action and speaking). They will also learn how to build a scene without a script or rehearsal. Students will perform an Italian improv style of acting called Commedia del’arte, an American style of acting called melodrama, and a modern style of acting called sketch comedy. A donation is appreciated to help fund costumes and props.

Foreign Language is a communication-based course in which students use listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to begin to develop fluency in French or Spanish. Students learn to use these skills while exploring a variety of themes or topics. They begin to recognize similarities and differences between target culture(s) and American culture. Students will meet the expectations of communicative functions within the context of familiar vocabulary and structures. Phonological and grammatical errors are frequent and are addressed in a way which promotes communication and student confidence. This is an ACADEMIC elective geared toward students with little or no background in the target language. Homework is assigned regularly, with frequent quizzes and tests, both oral and written.

Requirements for 1A: Minimum grade of a “C” in 6th or 7th grade English. *Prerequisite for 1B: The 7th grade course of the same language with a “C” or better.

Students who successfully complete two years of a foreign language in grades 7 and 8 may be recommended for second year foreign language placement at the high school level in 9th grade.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT ORCHESTRA 6th, 7th, and 8th Yearlong (posted as Band/Orchestra 004480) Orchestra is a course in orchestral music of different styles and periods. Students must possess the ability to perform on their instrument. This class will teach students to continue developing proficiency on a stringed instrument for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and to study string orchestra literature of appropriate difficulty as well as the fundamentals of music. A number of concerts will be performed each year at music festivals and for the general public. Events may include but are not limited to; winter and spring concerts, CMEA Festival, CMEA Solo/Ensemble Festival, and combined concert with other orchestras in our school district. Events are an important part of the program. A donation is appreciated to offset the expense of items such as sheet music, instruments, and travel.

7th CONCERT BAND Yearlong (posted as Band/Concert 004425) Concert Band is open to students in 7th grade. Students will learn proper instrumental techniques and rehearse and perform instrumental music of different styles, cultures, and periods. The band will give a number of performances at music festivals and for the general public. Events may include but are not limited to; winter and spring concerts, assemblies and CMEA Solo/Ensemble Festival). Events are an important part of the program. This class is designed for all students with some previous experience in instrumental music and can prepare students for more advanced classes. A donation is appreciated to offset the expense of items such as sheet music, instruments, and travel.

8th SYMPHONIC BAND Yearlong (posted as Band/Symphonic 004445) Symphonic Band is an advanced instrumental music class open to students in 8 th grade. Students must be able to play their instrument with a high degree of skill. The class will continue developing proficiencies on a band instrument at an advanced level, study concert band literature of appropriate difficulty and continue to study the fundamentals of music. The band will give a number of performances at music festivals and for the general public. Events may include but are not limited to; winter and spring concerts, assemblies, Northgate High School Band Festival, CMEA Band Festival, and CMEA Solo/Ensemble Festival. Yearlong and by audition only (posted as Band/Jazz 004430) Jazz Band is an advanced course in jazz. Students must be able to play their instrument with a high degree of skill. The music will consist of a variety of styles within the jazz idiom. Students will be expected to improvise with some skill and to know and understand the harmonic structure of the music that is played. The jazz band will perform on many occasions at concerts, festivals, and community events. A donation is appreciated to offset the expense of items such as sheet music, instruments, and travel. Requirements: Audition and advisor approval. This class may meet before school.

Hands-On Applied Elective Classes COMPUTERS I/ AUTOMATION AND ROBOTICS Semester (posted as Computers I 006810) Using project based learning; students are introduced to 21st century skills by exploring technology. In this course, students build a knowledge base of computer applications, information systems, Internet safety, and trace the history and development of automation and robotics. They learn about structures, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Students acquire knowledge and skills in engineering problem solving and exploring the world of technology & engineering. A donation is appreciated to offset expenses for materials.

COMPUTERS TECH Yearlong (006008) Computers Tech is for students with previous experience who enjoy finding solutions to technology and computer questions. Students in this class will become members of the Mouse Squad. Students will help with the technical support at Foothill. Mouse Squad draws upon the motivation, skills, and abilities of any school’s greatest resources – its students, to provide basic level of computer troubleshooting and maintenance support needed to assist teachers in their work to integrate technology into teaching and learning. Mouse Squad also provides students the opportunity to develop 21st century skills and apply them as they solve technical problems faced by their schools. The program, modeled on industry-standard help desks in business and industry, prepares and supports participants in the cultivation of technical and leadership skills needed for success in all work environments. In this course, students continue to build a knowledge base of computer applications, information systems, 21st century skills, networking, programming, and Internet safety through independent projects. A donation is appreciated to offset consumable materials and software. Requirements: Computers I, PLTW course work, OR advisor approval.

DESIGN AND MODELING Semester (posted as Design/Mod 007712) Under the Design and Modeling class, this Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Gateway to Technology (GTT) program features a project-based curriculum designed to challenge and engage the natural curiosity and imagination of middle school students. They envision, design and test their ideas with the same advanced modeling software used by companies like Lockheed Martin, Intel and Sprint. Throughout GTT, students acquire knowledge and skills in problem solving, teamwork and innovation as well as exploring Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers. This is an introductory class for those that might be interested in the Northgate PLTW program or who enjoy STEM classes. A donation is appreciated to offset consumable materials and software.

Semester (posted as Energy/Environ 007714) In this Project Lead the Way (PLTW) class, students investigate the impact of energy on our lives and the environment. In this hands-on project-based class, they design and model alternative energy sources and participate in an energy expo to demonstrate energy concepts and innovative ideas. Students evaluate ways to reduce energy consumption through energy efficiency and sustainability. A donation is appreciated to offset consumable materials and software.

FLIGHT AND SPACE Semester (posted as Hands on Tech 006881) The exciting world of aerospace comes alive through Flight and Space. Students explore the science behind aeronautics and use their knowledge to design, build, and test an airfoil. Custom-built simulation software allows students to experience space travel. A donation is appreciated to offset expenses for materials.

GENERAL SHOP I Semester (007150) Introduction to basic wood, metal, plastics, and leather working. The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of hand and power tool operation, appreciate safe working practices, use materials with understanding and conservation and explore occupational and vocational interests. In addition, students will gain a working knowledge of measurement, planning, and applicable mathematical calculation, demonstrate and appreciate good design, craftsmanship, and construction techniques, and become an informed consumer of wood, wood by-products, metal, plastics and leather materials. A donation is appreciated to offset the expense of materials.

GENERAL SHOP II Yearlong 8TH GRADE ONLY (007160) Students must have taken Wood I during 2015-2016 to qualify for this class. Introduction to advance woodworking, metal, plastics, and leather working will allow students to produce intricate projects and may also include metal inlay. Students may also learn related technical skills related to common industrial trades. A donation is appreciated to offset the expense of materials. Requirements: An “A” or better in Woodshop I or advisor approval.

INTRO TO HORTICULTURE Semester (posted as Auto Learner 009128) Introduction to Horticulture is a class to create and sustain an organic garden and landscape while integrating into the school's curriculum and offers students an opportunity to go deeper into science topics related to the environment. Students will be planting, maintaining and experimenting in our “outdoor classroom” which also includes planting beds. The garden is designed and maintained, using sound ecological practices using all aspects of farming the garden, from the way food is grown and harvested to the recycling of waste back into the earth. This class is designed to awaken children's senses and to encourage awareness and appreciation of the transformative values of nourishment, community, and stewardship of the land. A donation is appreciated to offset expenses such as garden equipment, seeds, plants recycling equipment, and other materials.

Semester (posted as PLTW Med Detect 007711) Medical Detectives students participate and train as hands on CSI investigations. Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they analyze genetic testing results to diagnose disease and study DNA evidence found at a “crime scene.” They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, investigate how to measure and interpret vital signs, and learn how the systems of the human body work together to maintain health. A donation is appreciated to offset expenses for materials.

Life Skills ON YOUR OWN Semester Class (008426) (If you have taken OYO as a 7th grader you are not eligible for OYO in 8th grade)

This course will focus on many different areas of life that students need to know in order to live successfully On Your Own (OYO). We will discuss maintaining a healthy body and mind, nutrition, money management, career choices, practice interviews, stress management, how to handle peer pressure, babysitting, and more. The class format includes role playing, discussions, small groups and some lectures. A donation is appreciated to offset materials.

Application Only Classes (*AOC) For those who applied and were accepted to an Application Only Class (AOC), you will only need to select your second elective: a 1-year class or 2-semester classes.

ART-ADVANCED (*AOC) Yearlong 8th GRADE ONLY Application and advisor approval (004120) This course builds on what students have learned in Art I and 6 th grade Rotation Art. 3-D art; sculpting, clay, or papier-mâché will be explored. Students will continue to learn about basic drawing and painting in a yearlong class. A donation is appreciated to help fund art supplies. Requirement: Minimum grade of an “A” or better in a previous art class or advisor approval.

DRAMA II (*AOC) Yearlong by application and/or interview (000520) This is an advanced drama class for students who like to act or like to do tech work, including film making. Tech work includes lights, sound, filming, film editing, publicity, props, sets, costumes, and makeup. Students will do a play for our student body in the fall and an evening play open to the public in the spring. After our spring play, students will participate in doing a film: some students will act and others will do the tech work for the film. There will be two field trips during school hours to see a play and visit the backstage area of a theater. Drama II students must participate in two after-school rehearsals for our fall assemblies and two-after school rehearsals for our spring play. Students must participate in two evening performances of the spring play. A donation is appreciated to help fund costumes, props and scripts.

Yearlong class by application and/or interview only (posted as Compter Appl 006880) Journalism offers students the opportunity to be a part of a computer based, multimedia class that reports on school news and events via the Griffin Broadcast. This class is designed to introduce 7th and 8th grade middle school students to the fundamentals of multimedia and video production. Students are engaged in hands-on experiences, use communications skills, and develop strategies to learn the basics of video pre-production, production, and post-production. As the students use technology, students also develop skills in planning, organization, script writing, interpersonal communication, team building, and media literacy. The Yearbook advisor is looking for students who are self-motivated, responsible, committed, dependable, creative, organized and who possess good writing skills.
