1 Acceptance of IGI Vision, Goals and Procedures The applying GeoGebra Institute declares with this application that it accepts and shares the vision, goals, non-commercial nature, licensing and following procedures with the International GeoGebra Institute and its other GeoGebra Institutes.

1.1 Vision of the International GeoGebra Institute The International GeoGebra Institute (IGI) provides free dynamic mathematics software and shares expertise in training, support and the development of materials for all students and teachers to improve mathematics, science and technology education world-wide. It nurtures and promotes collaboration between practitioners and researchers, seeking to establish self-sustaining user communities.

1.2 Mission of IGI and GeoGebra Institutes The International GeoGebra Institute and its local GeoGebra Institutes share the following three goals: 1. Training and Support: To coordinate and provide professional development opportunities and support for both pre-service and in-service teachers. 2. Development and Sharing: To develop and share workshop resources and classroom materials, and to continually improve and extend the dynamic mathematics software GeoGebra. 3. Research and Collaboration: To conduct and support GeoGebra-related research which focuses on the teaching and learning of mathematics in order to inform and improve training and development activities, and to promote collaboration between IGI and local GeoGebra Institutes and between international colleagues.

1.3 Non-Commercial Nature The applying GeoGebra Institute declares that it is (part of) a non-profit organization (e.g., university, teacher education college) with only non-commercial interests. Normally, services offered by a GeoGebra institute should be free of charge for teachers and students. If there are revenues created in connection with GeoGebra (e.g., books, online materials, workshops), it is expected that this money will be used to support and sustain the goals and activities of IGI or GeoGebra Institutes.

1.4 Licensing The applying GeoGebra Institute declares that it will share all developed materials under a Creative Commons Attribution, Non-commercial, Share Alike license (see http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/) or a similar license and that it will respect the license of the GeoGebra software itself (see http://www.geogebra.org/download/license.txt). The spirit of IGI and its GeoGebra Institutes is to share materials and be open for collaboration with everyone.

2.3 Activities and Goals of GeoGebra Institute 2.3.1

Training and Support

Starting with the Norwegian Centre for Mathematics Education’s network of teachers spread all over the country, we will build up national a network of certified GeoGebra Experts, Trainers and Institute Trainers (level 2-4). The Norwegian Centre for Mathematics Education will fund this network. Trough the network of experts and trainers the GeoGeobra Institute will give workshops for teachers. The school owners in Norway will have to pay for the workshops with money from the government. 2.3.2

Development and Sharing

GeoGebra Institute of Norway will be involved in translating and developing materials. We will take special responsibility for developing of materials well adapted to the national curricula in Norway. We will of course stimulate a culture for sharing. 2.3.3

Research and Collaboration

The Norwegian Centre for Mathematics Education coordinates a national network of mathematics teacher trainers and researchers. The Institute will use this network for collaboration with the other universities and university colleges in Norway, and we will invite some of those teacher trainers and researchers to be part of our GeoGebra Institute. Sigbjørn Hals and Anders Sanne attended the first IGI meeting in Cambridge May 7-8, 2008. We presented our ideas for the GeoGebra Institute of Norway. The Norwegian institute want to participate in the international collaboration and work with GeoGebra. Katarzyna Winkowska-Nowak, SWPS, Warsaw, Poland (http://rose.spik.swps.edu.pl/) is planning to establish a GeoGebra Institute in Poland, and she is writing an application for the EEA Grants and Norway Grants (http://www.regjeringen.no/en/sub/Europaportalen/EEA-Grants.html?id=115262). To qualify for these grants, she needs a Norwegian partner. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology will be such a partner, and we hope to have the opportunity to collaborate with Poland exchanging experiences, materials, and doing common research on GeoGebra. In a longer term, and if we get funding, we want to invite a fellow from the IGI network to work with us in Trondheim for a period of 6-12 months.

2.4 Certification The GeoGebra Institute of Norway will certify Norwegian GeoGebra users and trainers at levels 1-3. We would like to see IGI’s criteria for certification on each level in more detail, and we will base our certification on those criteria. 1. GeoGebra Users: Demonstrate effective use of GeoGebra in their own classrooms. We will offer this certification to teachers attending our workshops, but attending the workshop is not in itself sufficient to get this certification as the applicant has to demonstrate effective use of GeoGebra in her/his own classroom. A teacher colleague or the headmaster at the applicant’s school will have to testify such effective classroom use before we can certify. 2. GeoGebra Experts: Demonstrate the ability to create and share innovative GeoGebra teaching materials. These individuals may offer GeoGebra workshops and support other teachers in their own schools or regions. This will be the most important target group in the beginning, as we want to build a national network of certified GeoGebra Experts. Those experts will then be able to give regional workshops under the auspices of the GeoGebra Institute of Norway. 3. GeoGebra Trainers: Demonstrate innovative practices and have the ability to do practitioner research and to give presentations at the regional level. Programme for Teacher Education offers two in-service training courses that may be helpful for teachers who want to qualify for this certification level. The courses are: EDU6100 Use of ICT in mathematics education and EDU6101 Practitioner research and development in mathematics education. 4. GeoGebra Institute Trainers: Highly experienced GeoGebra presenters, trainers, and researchers involved in an accredited GeoGebra Institute which provide training and support for teachers, and give presentations at the regional and international level. The requirements and procedures for the certification processes at level 2-3 are not described in full detail above as we want help from the International GeoGebra Institute to establish these routines. The GeoGebra Institute of Norway already has one certified Institute Trainer (level 4), and IGI will receive more applications from our staff in the near future.
