learning about the many forms of the art of ikat. Ikat is an Indonesian word for a method of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dye on either the warp or weft fibers, or both. She first shared a lecture and photos of her trips researching the widely diverse cultures that all produce versions of woven silk ikat velvet. In her presentation she displayed a set of photos from her trip to Uzbekistan, where ikat velvet is called abrand, meaning “tying rainbows and clouds.”

Featured Presentation Ikat Velvet and Shibori Scarves Dr. Barbara Setsu Pickett is a professor at the University of Oregon, where she teaches fiber arts. She specializes in velvet weaving, shibori, and book arts. She has received awards and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Fulbright Commission, the Oregon Arts Commission and the Institute of Turkish Studies and has been an artist-in-residence at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. For the past two decades she has been weaving velvet and researching techniques, traveling all over the world and studying with master velvet weavers. She has studied in Italy, France, England, Japan, China, Turkey, and Uzbekistan,

Barbara also shared photos and information on the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, held the second weekend every July. There is stiff competition to exhibit at this festival. The second portion of the program presented silk scarves, hand dyed in her Mihara Shibori Studio. The shibori process produces intricate patterns through the use of various tying methods prior to dyeing the silk fabric, without requiring use of chemical resists.
