Welfare Sub-committee so that there is no break in our benevolent activities.

President’s Report Dear Members,

Our programme for 2017 is filled with a diversity of events, catering to the wishes of our members. These functions create opportunities for us to bond, develop lasting friendships and to perpetuate our culture. Many of us have become extended members of each other’s families, sharing in the joys and sorrows that these relationships bring.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas filled with love and sharing and that 2017 brings you and your families health and happiness. Our annual Carols and Christmas Tree for children, heralded in the Christmas season. Both were big successes and allowed us to celebrate the events in true spirit.

Each year we lose long term members through illness and death and this brings into focus the need to enjoy what time we have and to leave a legacy for future generations. The project, “Anglo-Indians Helping Themselves”, aims at achieving the latter. Hopefully, it will kick off this year.

During this time we also reflect on those who are lonely and disadvantaged. Our new Welfare Sub-committee is mindful of this situation and continues to assist those in need on the Indian sub-continent. With your support we will continue to do this into the future.

Thank you for your support over the past twelve months and I look forward to catching up with many of you at one of our events in 2017. God bless

As you will know the Association has undergone some structural changes to better position it for the next 10 years or so. Part of this process was to dissolve the Benevolent Fund. This action is not intended to dilute our charitable effort but more to allow us to expand the work previously undertaken by the Benevolent Fund. It is our hope that this sharper focus on aid will consolidate our membership and bring in other welfare minded people.

Gordon Maher, President

In 2016 our Association was very thankful to have been given a Championship Carroms Board by Bess Reid. This much loved item of her late husband Reg, will bring our Association members much enjoyment!

At our Annual General Meeting we provided a timeline for follow up actions and I am pleased to report that approval has been given by the Commissioner, Consumer Protection to commence the initial step in the process, which is to implement our distribution plan. Once this has been done, we will notify the Commissioner and he will inform us of the date of the dissolution. In the interim, work continues under the new

Tin Can Party – 7th October 2016 There was a cosy crowd of 40 people. From all accounts, I heard many positive and pleasing comments on how friendly and homely the atmosphere was and that large numbers were not important. This made me feel good (as we are so used to having large numbers at our functions), but I now realize that we can only expect around 50-60 people at the Friendship Group functions, so I will settle for that, although more would be nice! However, the night panned out well. There were 2 winners for the Hampers and 2 winners for the PAN raffle. Gordon & Clive once again did a stalwart job in providing the music (gratis) and getting the regulars on their feet. Massive thanks to the “Maherajas” Golden Guitars for their superb entertainment.

Sincere thanks to Ian, Bridget and Adrian for helping with set-up and everyone else who helped clean up after the show. Thanks to Jennie for taking all the photos.

Annual General Meeting – Nov 2016 The Annual General Meeting of the Australian Anglo Indian Association (Inc.) was held on 6th November 2016. 62 people attended. It was an historic meeting as we were proposing the dissolution of the Australian Anglo Indian Association’s Benevolent Fund. Once all business was conducted at the BF AGM, motions were moved and carried finalising this action. Immediately following the BF meeting, the AAIA AGM was run. As usual, the President presented his report on the activities of the Association over the past twelve months with each of the convenors giving reports on their particular areas of responsibility. Significant points of the report were: 

  

  

Despite cutting back on events the Association was in a sound financial position with a surplus for the year Good revenues were received from the hire of the hall Expenses for the maintenance of the Cultural Centre continue to rise The popularity of the Friendship Group was growing with good themed functions Membership was decreasing due to illness and an ageing clientele Restructuring work had commenced with continuing action listed Actions had been taken to make us compliant with the new Associations Incorporation’s Act 2015

A segment of the meeting was dedicated to explaining how the work of the Benevolent Fund would continue through the newly formed Welfare sub-committee. The meeting was assured that the charitable work that had been previously conducted by the benevolent fund would continue without disruption. Just prior to the election of the Executive Committee, Don Wallace, Heather Belchambers and Carol D’Costa were presented with the ‘Members of the Year Award’. The following were elected to the Executive of the Association for 2016-17: Gordon Maher, Cornel White, Doug Noel, Joy Gasper, John Gasper, Jennifer Maher, Ian Fernandez, Danny McCarthy, Isabel Noel, Liz Clarence, Natalie McCarthy, Shirley Olliver and Sandy Williamson.

Special General Meeting – March 2017 A special general meeting will be conducted on 12 March 2017 to inform members of the progress made on the dissolution of the Australian Anglo Indian Association Benevolent Fund (Inc.). Topics listed below will be discussed:  Results of the application to the Commissioner, Consumer Protection to dissolve the BF Association  Actions pertaining to the distribution plan of the AAIA BF  Continuing charity work under the newly convened Welfare subcommittee At this meeting we will also run through the constitutional amendments that we have made, as required by the revised Associations Incorporations Act 2015. Although we have three years to finalise all changes, we will endeavour to complete most of these before then. See the Social Calendar for specific event details.

Member Scrapbook - Errol James At a Swan Regional Festival Mass for St. Vincent de Paul (known as Vinnies) on 29 May 2016, I was delighted to receive a certificate of Appreciation and badge to celebrate my 36 years with Vinnies. The Mass was held at our Parish Church of Good Shepherd in Lockridge, which made it even more special. Time has certainly flown since I first joined the organisation so many years ago when I was in the Balcatta Parish. When we moved to Morley about 11 years ago, I re-joined Vinnies at the first opportunity. The main work of the Parish conferences is to make home visitations and do what we can to give people in need a hand up. The work is very fulfilling. In the words of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, our founder, “The strongest bond of true friendship is charity, and the exercise of good charity is the practice of good works”. The following month I was even more surprised to receive an invitation to the Constitutional Centre of Western Australia to receive a medal and certificate of recognition for my service to Vinnies. This presentation is made by the State Government to volunteers from various organisations who have given more than 25 years voluntary service to the organisation concerned. I am a very proud recipient of the medal which was presented by the Hon. Tony Simpson MLA. A lovely morning tea was provided which Jocelyn and I enjoyed.

Karaoke & Pizza Night We held our Karaoke/Pizza night on 15 October 2016 and what a blast it turned out to be! Even though numbers were down on previous years I know everyone had a great time. The evidence of this was that I had to actually put a stop to the singing at 10.15pm and people still hung around and even helped with the sweeping and clearing up. I know I certainly had a lovely time.

I take this opportunity to thank my great subcommittee for all their help and for attending extra early to set up. And, to you my EC team, I thank you for supporting us with your presence and assistance. Thank you to Ian and Bridget for doing all the shopping. And, a big thank you to Ron and Gwen for loaning us the karaoke – gratis. Jennie Maher Membership Convenor

A Night In Disguise – Masquerade Ball Fundraiser This event was run as a fundraiser for the AAIA by Carol D’Costa and Heather Belchambers, both members of our association. It was held on the 29/10/2016 at our association hall in Padbury. In total there were 109 tickets sold for the event. Tickets

sales

were

down mainly due to 3 other dances being held on

the

same

night,

however the two above mentioned ladies and their committee left no stone unturned in their efforts to make this event a success, and gave every one present on the night a night to remember. It was a massive job and they did it with great aplomb! I must mention here that the committee received fantastic support for the event from Steve D’Costa from Platinum DJ’s who donated the use of his Photo Booth free of charge on the night. He also supplied all the beautiful lighting that was on display on the night at the hall both inside and out. The band for the evening was Klass Act (Harvey and Corrina) and they really did live up to their name. They kept the crowd on their toes all night. The decorations in the hall were fantastic and set the tone for the evening. The hall looked just beautiful. Last but not least I would like to give a big thank you to Ian Fernandez for donating his time on the night to set up and run the bar which helped the function immensely. There were also two Raffles run on the night along with the sale of table decorations at the end of the night to raise money for the association. The Ball raised just under $2000.00! Danny McCarthy - Convenor Social/Fundraising Committee

Transport Project The Executive Committee is considering a future project to transport its house-bound members to attend events at the Cultural Centre and is seeking eligible members to register their interest at the office by calling 9401 3482. 7

Burra Khana – A Feast Fit for a King! Sunday 13 November 2016 - Kohinoor Indian Restaurant This popular function held at the award-finalist Kohinoor restaurant Padbury is always a sell-out! Guests started arriving early to meet up with friends and enjoy a drink or two before their meal.

After entrée was served at tables the all-you-can eat buffet lunch opened for all to indulge in followed by delicious sweets. It was indeed an enjoyable and indulgent afternoon and many stayed on to chat and mingle well after closing time.

Many thanks to Kohinoor for their excellent service and donation towards the raffle prizes and to my sub-committee who did a great job to ensure this was once again a successful function. Doug Noel - Convenor

Hollywood Stars Luncheon – Welfare Fundraiser The Welfare subcommittee held its first fundraising event on 27 November 2016. This was a Hollywood Theme lunch and had 82 attendees. Everyone entered into the spirt of the afternoon and a number dressed up as their favourite Hollywood star.

8

Everyone was encouraged to walk the red carpet, and having a photo taken on the carpet was very popular.

There was a parade of the “stars” again on the red carpet and a first and second prize given to the best two female and male “stars”.

Kiddies Christmas Tree 2016 Our children’s Christmas Tree was held on 10 December and was well attended. 44 happy little faces came along with 51 mum/dads/nanas/papas, plus we had 27 EC/Sub-committee/helpers. Again, Don Wallace was Santa and Cornel White and Michael Carvey were his elves. The hall was decorated beautifully yet again. As the kids arrived they got stuck into the various craft activities. The face-painting is always a favourite, however, the older kids seemed to avoid this activity this year, preferring to play instead. The children also enjoyed all the arts and

9

craft that were organised for them – and this year we had them making Christmas trees that were really cute. All games/races went off very well and the kids enjoyed these immensely and winners were presented with a gift. A variety of food was served and the menu was certainly scrumptious. The adults received home-made patty, aloo bhondas, cheese straws, coconut ice sweets and Christmas cake. The yummy dishes were prepared by Ian Fernandez, Gwen Lewis, Colleen D’ Jordan, Joy Gasper and Shirley Olliver. The children enjoyed their Nuggets & Chips, Pie bites, mini cupcakes, cookies, ice cream and lolly bags. Once again, Ron Lewis (Red Rooster) supplied the Nuggets & Chips (which the kids devoured)…thank you Ron. Thanks to all who were involved with the food. There was a short session of carol singing where everyone joined in…even the kids actually sang and it was such a delight to hear them! We also had a nativity scene with some of our kids participating and Gwen Lewis read a scene which the kids enacted. I thank all of them and their parents and special thanks to Isabel for organising this, Gwen for reading, Heather and Louise for assisting with the kids and Gordon for playing guitar and leading the Carols. As usual Santa’s entrance was a joyous moment – to see the little eyes light up was wonderful. Gifts were handed out, photos taken and then, all too soon, it was time to leave. It was a great afternoon with everything running smoothly. I would like to thank: Don Wallace, Peter Williamson, Adrian Olliver, Keith Patterson, Reg Burnaby, Ron Lewis, Louise Maher-de Silva, Heather Belchambers, Jeanene Smith, Xaphina Mathanda & Abdul, my non-EC Subcommittee Michael Carvey, Bridget Fernandez and Gwen Lewis and to you my EC team, Gordon, Cornel, Doug, Joy, John, Isabel, Ian, Liz, Nat, Sandy, Shirley and Dan, Without help from you and our merry band of volunteers we wouldn’t have been able to achieve this success. Christmas Carols 2016 Our annual Christmas Carols held at the Association’s Cultural Centre on 10 December 2016 was a beautiful occasion. For us it heralds in the Christmas season with the selected songs being a testament to the true spirit of the season. Our Association choir dressed in red and green and led by Colleen Digby, once again,

excelled and this was despite them having only one practice. They sang with much feeling with the large audience eagerly joining in. This was made possible as the lyrics were displayed on a large screen. Attendees were provided with a glass of sherry/port and a piece of specially prepared Christmas cake to create that special feeling of Christmas. A wonderful evening shared with friends in a common desire to bring joy and happiness to each other. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each one of you for the part you played in making this function a success and to my fellow Executive Committee thanks for all the help in taking down and putting away all the Christmas decorations in record time and for your continuous support throughout the year. Happy New Year! Jennie Maher - Membership Convenor

Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service Our thanksgiving service is principally an acknowledgement of what God has done for us as an Association and as a community. However, there are additional benefits that can be derived from this service:   

It can help us identify “all” our blessings and to reflect on our life’s journey – how have we come this far? It can strengthen our resolve to trust and accept circumstances as they are It can encourage us to be positive and trust that everything happens for a reason

Each year since moving into our Padbury premises, the Association has held an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service on the first Saturday in May. However, this year we have rearranged some of our functions and scheduled the service for 27th May 2017 starting at 10.00am. We hope that these new arrangements will attract a larger attendance. This year the Thanksgiving address will be delivered by Denzil Bruce, the founding President of the Association, who retired in 2015. It will be good to hear his reflections on the journey the Association has been on for more than 27 years. The Association will provide the morning tea (no need to bring a plate). For catering purposes, we would appreciate your call or an email to the office to confirm your attendance. Email: [email protected] or tel. 9401 3482 (Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9.30-12.00 noon)

New trade & cultural links forged with India I am pleased to advise you that I travelled to New Delhi in India late last week on behalf of Premier Colin Barnett and the Liberal National State Government to witness Hon. N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, sign a Sister State Agreement between Western Australia and Andhra Pradesh. The State Government is committed to developing this relationship with our important neighbour and trading partner. Our human links with India have expanded dramatically, as have our cultural and business links. Through a multi-pronged approach, we are working to build and further develop those links with India. At the signing in New Delhi, Chief Minister Naidu, said: "For our two states, it is a win-win combination - it will go a long way. This is a learning process for you and for us also. We are very happy to have a sister state relationship between Western Australia and Andhra Pradesh. Both states have extraordinary resources. In India, Andhra Pradesh is doing extremely well and WA is a very progressive state and they are doing good work. Both countries will have an understanding on education, mineral exploration, and also agriculture, aquaculture - we are going to work in such a way that it will benefit both states. I am very happy with this milestone in our history to have a sister state agreement with WA." I wish you and your members a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2017, and I look forward to continuing to work with you in the New Year. HON. DR MIKE NAHAN MLA Treasurer; Minister for Energy; Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests

New Years Eve Dance 2016 The 2016 New Year’s Eve Dance was once again held at the air conditioned Cyril Jackson Hall and was a resounding success with everyone having a great time, eating, drinking, dancing and catching up with friends. The Band in

attendance was the Mustangs who provided us with music that was enjoyed and appreciated by all. Everyone had a great night judging by the comments that we received from most people who thanked the organisers for a wonderful night as they left after 1am on New Year’s Day. We also welcomed a few late comers who came along to bring in the New Year with family and friends. The Hall was filled to capacity without being uncomfortable with plenty of room to move around and dance and fill the dance floor at 12 midnight. Security was provided in the car park and there were no incidents. A lot of people worked very hard to make it a great show and I would like to thank the subcommittee, Executive Committee and all the members who helped as well. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year. Welfare Subcommittee Update The Welfare Committee for 2016-2017 comprises of Brian Janes, Liz Clarence, Joy Gasper, Colleen D’Jordan, Alberta Janes, Joyce Mathanda and Louise Maher. This is the first Welfare Report for the AAIA newsletter following the decision to dissolve the AAIA Benevolent Fund and include all the welfare matters under the AAIA. This will enable the Association to expand its welfare commitments over the coming years. On 30 November 2016 the AAIA Benevolent Fund wrote to the Commissioner of Department of Commerce requesting the cancellation of the fund and I am pleased to inform our members that the Commissioner has approved our request. We have one more step to take before this is complete and we have a cancellation date from the Commissioner. However, while our application was being considered we did not stop helping those who required our assistance. We were able to help more families in Kolkata and Chennai through the rations program, and gave some additional funds for Christmas to those who need it most. The Adopt a Family program continued as usual as we forwarded funds to Chennai for Becky for the next six months. We also sent Becky’s family a little extra for Christmas. Fundraising The Welfare subcommittee held it first fundraising event on 27 November 2016. This was a Hollywood Theme lunch and it was a wonderful afternoon. You can see the write up and photos from this event on pages 8 & 9. The next fundraising function is on the 5th March 2017 so please keep that date free. This is going to be a Chaat Afternoon along with a car boot sale. Details are included in the Social Calendar in this issue. This is a new and exciting time for the Association’s welfare program and I am confident that we will be able to help many people in the coming years. Thank you once again for your continued generous support. Happy New Year and God Bless Liz Clarence - AAIA Welfare Subcommittee Convenor

Member Scrapbook - A Tribute to Rebecca Kristy Anderson Submitted by her aunt Pamela D'Costa

Rebecca Kristy Anderson born to Nannette Fardey and Phillip Anderson on 12/7/1976, a double graduate who chose a life in service to the God she loved. She was the Youth Pastor at the Lakeside Christian Church Greenwood and had the record as being the longest serving Chaplain for the Eastern Hills Senior High Schools.

She influenced three groups of students through to high school, the last graduating in 2016. Her godly influence and impact on her students have been acknowledged by a memorial wall in her honour. Each student has had the opportunity to create their own tile to symbolise what she meant to them.

Her father Phillip has written this concerning his beloved daughter who was so shockingly taken suddenly on the 2 June 2013. "Rebecca Kirsty Anderson took her Christian faith, her love for God and His calling to its true heights. Her strength gained through her faith, effort and sacrifice helped her fully achieve her goal; to help young people grow in faith and live their lives fully and truly".

Becks "walked the talk" to truly shine Christ's light without wavering to fulfil her commitment to serve. In the words of her Principal "What Rebecca has achieved in her short life, some people would not achieve in three lifetimes. This is the reason why the Eastern Hills High school has chosen to honour her”.

Beck was a simple chaplain and a youth pastor. Her impact on a whole generation of young people and their families was the reason she has been lovingly remembered. Rebecca was born on the 12th July 1976; her spirit was raised up from this earth on the 2nd June 2013.

Two Great Kolkata Musicians Fall Silent

Carlton Kitto was a Bebop jazz guitarist from Calcutta, India. He was born in Bangalore, where he started working in the railways in his early days. Kitto later started his music career in Chennai in the 1960s. He moved to Calcutta in 1973 and became a part of the band, Jazz Ensemble in Moulin Rouge, an upscale restaurant in Park Street, Calcutta. After two years, he started playing in another restaurant named Mocambo in the same locality. He taught jazz and classical guitar in Calcutta School of Music and also performed in restaurants and pubs like, Chowringhee Bar, Trincas, Blue Fox, Someplace Else in Calcutta. Kitto had the distinction of playing along with other legendary jazz musicians like, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, David Leibman, Larry Coryell, Chico Freeman and Charlie Byrd. It was in the 1960s that Kitto arrived in Calcutta from Chennai. He looked for an avenue to pursue his jazz dream in a city “where most restaurants would have jazz bands and where foreign acts would perform. Audiences would come wearing ties, pinstriped coats and gowns”. For someone whose father was a high-ranked police officer in Chennai, Kitto’s home at Alimuddin Street in Calcutta was austere. The walls, though, were lined with framed photographs —one such photograph had Kitto on stage with Louiz Banks, Pam Crain and Donald Saigal — among the names that ruled the jazz stage in Calcutta for years. Kitto, who once shared the stage with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, talked about the time Lahiri chose a guitar student of his when he couldn’t coax Kitto to join him. The student went on to gain recognition in India as the composer Tabun. Some of Kitto’s other students, like Pritam Chakraborty and Jeet Ganguly have flourishing Bollywood careers though their 67-year-old teacher had remained unmoved, and could often be found performing at The Oberoi Grand. “The best days of jazz are past and can never come back,” he often mused. In 2012 Half Diminished Films produced the ground breaking documentary film directed by Susheel Kurien, ‘’Finding Carlton -Uncovering the Story of Jazz in India.’’ Carlton Kitto passed away in Calcutta on 28 November 2016. RIP.

Rubin Rebeiro passed away in Calcutta in October 2016. The distinction that Rubin drew between jazz, his choice of music, and pop and rock, is sharp. “All I hear the young bands sing is ‘Baby, come back, baby, come back’ on two basic chords,” said Rebeiro. “No matter how much they sing, baby will never come back.” At Rebeiro’s central Calcutta home, nothing of the spirit of the Anglo-Indian community was in short supply. As one of the oldest jazz vocalists and double bass players in the city, Rebeiro was a teetotaller over the five decades that he was on stage, beginning from the now-defunct Golden Slipper nightclub in Calcutta in 1956. He often spoke about the Anglo-Indian vibe: the cheer that

embodied the community through high-cholesterol meals of pork, beef and ox tongue; music and dance; parties and the workplace - life, in general. Frank Sinatra blended in perfectly with Rebeiro’s world. When Rebeiro sang Sinatra, among others, whether it was at Park Street’s Blue Fox Restaurant in the 1960s, the Princes nightclub of The Oberoi Grand hotel in the 1970s, or with the late music band Carlton Kitto Combo, it was easy for listeners to get high on nostalgia alone. RIP Reuben.
