Re: ICOMOS technical review of the report on the state of conservation of the World Heritage property "Historic Centre of Florence" Dear Mr. Rao, With reference to your letter ref: CLT/HER/WHC/7960/IT/AS/KR dated 27 May 2015 about the above question and your request for documents and information which would allow ICOMOS to assess the state of conservation of the property, as far as we know no action has been taken by the local public authority to prevent the risk of damage to the UNESCO Heritage Sites of Florence. On the contrary, with regard to the project for the high speed rail tunnels and new railway station (TAV), the Comune di Firenze has issued a “landscape authorization” that gives the constructor the green light to start excavation of two tunnels 7.5 Km long. According to our experts, the underground works will dramatically affect the stability of some important monuments inside the UNESCO World Heritage property (Fortezza da Basso, Arco dei Lorena and Porta San Gallo). ICOMOS requested detailed information about the potential impact of this construction BEFORE the work re-commences. We attach the letter our Associations wrote to architect Alessandra Marino, Soprintendente Belle Arti e Paesaggio per le Provincie di Firenze, Pistoia e Prato, who may approve or reject the landscape authorization. The letter contains details of our experts’ reports that explain the reasons for our alarm about the risks linked to the project and the decision to proceed without examining the possible alternatives to the underground solution. We take the opportunity to thank you for your cooperation and support in the defense of the World Heritage property “Historic Center of Florence”.
