Students will learn basic animal anatomy and physiology, genetics, nutrition including feeds and feeding and reading animal feed labels, health and maintenance, and career opportunities. Labs include hatching chicks, physical examinations, microscopy, inoculation and stitching simulations along with an opportunity to be an entrepreneur, marketing products from your own ideas. This course meets a high school science requirement. We do not guarantee that this will meet admission requirements at all 4 year universities. In this class students will get to know Wisconsin wildlife populations, forests, and aquatic ecosystems. Did you know some flowers are edible? Students grow plants in the classroom, greenhouse, and outdoors while learning plant ID, parts and function, selection, genetics, biotechnology and life processes. Students also learn about soils, nutrient needs, pest control and reproduction practices. The class will also explore career skills such as terrarium design, flower arranging, and landscape design. Students taking this class are expected to be active participants in all group work, research, field work and activities. This course meets a high school science requirement. SEMESTER 1 SEMESTER 2 GRADE LEVEL FEE Prerequisite 8555 8556 11-12 NONE Biology and Animal Science This course will develop a deeper understanding of the animals and their health care by providing instruction on veterinary terminology, anatomy physiology, genetics, clinical exams, hospital procedures, laboratory techniques, animal management and career exploration. Activities will include animal examinations and handling, grooming techniques, taking animal vitals, animal restraining and bandaging and aquaculture (tilapia) care. Students will have direct access to live department animals to practice protocols and health procedures. This course meets a high school science requirement. We do not guarantee that this will meet admission requirements at all 4 year universities.
