ALEX ITO & GREG ITO / AFTER GRUEN
SADE is pleased to present, After Gruen, a two-person exhibition featuring the work of Alex Ito and Greg Ito. The exhibition’s title is derived from Victor Gruen- the architectural pioneer behind the 21st century shopping mall in America. Gruen imagined a utopian community that seamlessly integrated residential communities, financial centers and cultural institutions. He hoped for a fluid exchange of culture and commerce that would raise the quality of life in the urban environment. In an article titled “The Sad Story of Shopping Malls” (1978), Gruen expressed his discontent for American shopping centers and the “bastardization” of his ideas, saying that they no longer took into account the proliferation of public well-being but, instead, were more focused towards the accumulation of corporate capital. After Gruen investigates aesthetics of intimacy in the era of the “collapse of the graybox”. With large shopping facilities increasingly closing throughout America, empty concrete monuments are abandoned with the ghosts of their hayday. What was once Gruen’s frankenstein monster of modern urbanization now sits vacant awaiting demolition. Do we grow nostalgic towards these cultural vacancies? Both artists’ work engages to explore levels of intimacy and presence, both subjective or corporately induced, within the consumerist architecture taken from Victor Gruen’s dream for the modern experience.
