In the near future, we will need to begin replacing our outdated asbestos pipe. As this pipe continues to age, it can become a toxic hazard and is very vulnerable to earthquakes. Properly applied software, hardware and instrumentation technologies are likely the only hope we have to save rate payers the estimated 80+ dollars per billing period estimated to be needed to repair and replace pipe. Transparency is the 3 rd strategic goal of Mesa Water. Our city’s water district has spent more than $330,000 dollars of our ratepayer tax money to advance their hasty and hostile takeover of the Sanitary District (according to Public records supplied by Mesa Water). This included two consolidation studies: the first showed minimal savings and the second used outdated data and substantial debt issuance to get the results Mesa Water advertised in their July press releases of a one-time “$650 rebate.” While urgent and unfunded liabilities like asbestos pipe remain unresolved, these “savings” will require Mesa Water to issue substantial debt, hence mortgaging our future. The Sanitary District Board meetings are audio/visual recorded and posted on the District web site. However, Mesa Water meetings are not. Ratepayers deserve an opportunity to see and hear the fate of our shared water future.
“While I am not the incumbent, I have over 30 years of experience managing private sector limited resource projects which will have major benefits improving, preserving and maintaining Mesa Water. In this unprecedented drought, the conservation planning to ensure our water infrastructure is of utmost importance to our City of Costa Mesa.” – Alex Reich, candidate, Mesa Water
