Alien periodic table You have made radio contact with life on a distant planet. Many of the elements that make up the earth are also found on this planet. The inhabitants have, of course, assigned different names and symbols to each of these elements. You have the radio transmission, which gave data on the known chemical and physical properties of the 30 elements. Your job is to match the Alien element with it’s Earth counterpart. Procedure: 1. Use the blank periodic table provided. You will need to use a periodic table to compare our elements with theirs. NOTE: You may not be able to place each element on the table in order of their clues. Fill in what you know for sure and then go back a second time. 2. Write the name and symbol of the elements in their proper positions, based on the following information about their chemical and physical properties: > The noble gases are Bombal (Bo), Wobble (Wo), Jeptum (J) and Logon (L). Wobble has the greatest atomic mass and Bombal the least. Logon is lighter than Jeptum. > The most reactive group of metals are Xtalt (X), Byyou (By), Chow (Ch) and Qyackzi (Q). Of these metals, Chow has the lowest atomic mass, Qyackzi is in the same period as Wobble. > Apstrom (A), Vulcanic (V) and Kratt (Kt) are nonmetals whose atoms typically need to gain or share an electron to fill its outer shell. Vulcania is in the same period as Qyackzi and Wobble. > The metalloids are Ernst (E), Highho (Hi), Terriblum (T) and Sississ (Ss). Sississ is the metalloid with greatest atomic mass. Ernst is the metalloid with the lowest atomic mass. Highho and Terriblum are in Group 4A. Terriblum has more protons than Highho. Yazzer (Yz) touches the zigzag line, but it's a metal, not a metalloid. > The lightest element of all is called Pfsst (Pt). The heaviest element in the group of 30 elements is Eldorado (El). The most chemically active nonmetal is Apstrom and is a common ingredient in toothpaste. Kratt reacts with Byyou to form table salt (NaCI). > The element Doggone (D) has only four protons in its atom. > Floxxit (Fx) is important in the chemistry of life. Rhaatrap (R) and Doadeer (Do) are metals in the fourth period. Do has two electrons in its outer shell and R has three electrons in its outer shell. > Magnificon (M), Goldy (6) and Sississ are all members of Group 5A. Goldy has fewer total electrons than Magnificon. > Urrp (Up), Oz (Oz) and Nuutye (Nu) all need two electrons to fill their outer shell. Nuutye has the same properties as a gas found in the Earth's atmosphere. Oz has a lower atomic number than Urrp. > The element Anatom (An) has atoms with a total of 49 electrons. Zapper (Z) and Pie (Pi) only have two electrons in their outer shell. Z has fewer electron shells than Pi.
