FoundationHighlights Edition 108 l August 2017

Giving young people new experiences

Director’s Message Welcome to the August edition of Highlights! July has offered us a moment of reflection as we celebrated awarding our 5,000th grant. We funded a babypod at Royal United Hospital Bath to transport newborns and infants safely and securely. So far this year we have given away nearly £500,000 to fund equipment for therapy rooms used to deliver auditory verbal therapy to deaf children, to purchase a minibus to transport disabled young people to leisure facilities, to support palliative and respite care for life-limited children and their families at children’s hospices, and to provide assistance dogs for disabled young people.

Sascha Koehler, General Manager and Nicky Willard of Hilton Brighton Metropole with Simon Sheehan

We believe all young people should be able to achieve their potential and we provide specialist equipment to enable young people with disabilities to improve their education. In this edition of Highlights, we meet Elodie and discover how the braille machine we funded will support her and other visually impaired children with learning braille and increase their confidence in braille literacy.

This month we also released our Impact Report 2016-17 which shows how our work in 2016 helped transform the lives of 33,609 young people through 300 grants totalling £956,332 and celebrates the young people’s achievements. Our impact was summarised by Dame Maureen when she said, “I am enormously grateful to all our supporters who give freely of their time, skills and donations to help the Foundation. It is our volunteers and supporters who are at the heart of what we are able to achieve. I feel so privileged to play a part in the vital work of the charity and am so proud of how we have been able to transform the lives of so many young people.” I recently enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the brilliant fundraising undertaken by our supporters at Hilton Brighton Metropole and The Waldorf Hilton following their recent Midsummer Ball and Gala Dinner. It was a great opportunity to meet our sponsors, to award our beneficiary project partners with grants to support their work with young people and to also meet some of their young people. I would like to thank the teams at both hotels for volunteering their time to organise these fantastic events.

We awarded Over The Wall £10,330 to help fund four camps for children with serious, lifelimiting illnesses and disabilities, like Zofeya who attended a camp.

I would also like to express how impressed I am of Jean-Michel Dixte, Senior Director EMEA, Brand F&B Development at Hilton, who is swimming the English Channel for the Foundation this August. Fewer people have successfully swum the channel than have climbed Mount Everest and Jean-Michel has been training for three years. Everyone at the Foundation wishes Jean-Michel lots of luck and we look forward to sharing a picture of him on French soil next month. With the ball season fast approaching, upcoming cycle challenges and another round of grants to award, we are looking forward to supporting even more young people and delivering a real impact in their lives. I would like to say a big thank you to all our committed supporters who have made this possible through their hard work fundraising. I do hope you enjoy this issue of Highlights which shows the impact of our work on young people and celebrates the amazing efforts of our dedicated supporters. Together we are transforming young lives. Warm regards,

Simon Sheehan, Director August 2017

Inspiring creativity and building confidence The Waldorf Hilton hosted a celebratory cheque presentation on 25th July following its successful 42nd Street Gala Dinner in May which raised over £38,000 for the Foundation and Theatre Royal Haymarket Masterclass Trust. Guests at the presentation included Guy Hilton, General Manager at The Waldorf Hilton, Dame Maureen Thomas, Deputy Chairman of the Foundation, Billy Differ, Trustee of the Foundation, and Arnold M. Crook, Chairman of Masterclass Trust, who all enjoyed meeting young people who were attending a workshop at the hotel. As part of the Masterclass programme, the young people are developing a play about cyber-bullying. Masterclass Trust, the in-house education charity of the Theatre Royal Haymarket, was presented with a cheque for £19,492.76 to support its programme of free training and careers advice opportunities, workshops, work experience and practical learning opportunities for young people. The programme aims to build confidence, strengthen selfesteem, nurture creativity and develop business and life skills. The Foundation also received £19,492.76 from the Gala Dinner which will help us to transform young lives through education and health. Arnold M. Crook, Chairman of Masterclass, said, “Theatre

is one of the oldest forms of creativity and allows us the important opportunity to explore and question the world we live in. It is only through the very generous support of organisations like the Waldorf Hilton and DM Thomas Foundation for Young People that Masterclass is able to continue to give young people free access to the professional world of theatre; inspiring and encouraging them to have a voice .”

Golf Day helps to transform young lives On 20th July Hilton Supply Management held its annual Golf Day in support of the Foundation at Hilton Puckrup Hall. Hilton Supply Management invited its suppliers to attend from across Europe for a day of golf followed by a dinner and entertainment from comedian Simon Evans. Guests also enjoyed a raffle and auction with prizes including a stay at Conrad Algarve. We were delighted to be joined by pupils from the nearby Vale of Evesham School, who we recently awarded £1,000 for a set of ‘Bag Books’ (multisensory books) for children with learning difficulties, thanks to Hilton Puckrup’s dedicated fundraising. We also awarded the school £5,870.87 to renovate a playground and to fund a Wobble Dish. The hotel has built up a relationship with the school following our grants and invited the pupils to help with the golf day. They thoroughly enjoyed trying to putt a few holes themselves.

AWD 2017 was a fun celebration of 10 years of our community event. Our supporters held a fantastic range of events throughout the summer in support of the Foundation and our local community partners. Kilometres were cycled in the lobbies of London Hilton on Park Lane and Hilton London Heathrow Airport, and across England by the team at Hilton Leicester. Hilton Leeds City and DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Amsterdam Centraal Station took advantage of their local canals, organising waterside runs through their cities. Hilton Dublin City, Hilton Dublin Airport and Conrad Dublin joined forces for a 12km cliff walk along the beautiful Irish coastline, whilst Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa led a community night walk between the towns of Quarterira and Vilamoura. Different departments at Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian set their own active challenges, including walk to work initiatives and football matches. Hilton Garden Inn Krakow and Hilton Watford both organised fun days for the local community with activities and active challenges collecting kilometres. And the rain did not dampen Hilton Sofia’s AWD spirit as they moved their sports day inside, holding various races and games for 80 local children.

Increasing children’s access to braille In May we awarded Angel Eyes NI a grant of £3,796 to purchase a Mountbatten brailler, an electronic machine for writing braille and developing awareness of braille symbols and characters. It is an important learning tool which will empower children, like seven year old Elodie, with confidence in braille literacy. When Elodie was six weeks old, her parents were told she had bilateral Micropthalmia and Coloboma which prevented her eyes forming properly. Both her retinas detached soon after. Elodie is visually impaired and uses braille. Elodie and her mum found support from Angel Eyes NI, who provide emotional and practical support to parents of blind and partially sighted children.

Thanks to the Foundation’s grant, the newly purchased Mountbatten brailler will help children to learn braille and increase their access to braille literacy. Elodie’s mum

“I just love her growing confidence with the other children in the Braille Network group as it is much more difficult for blind children to play and make friends as they miss play gestures and facial expressions.” Elodie’s mum

explained: “The

funding that the Foundation has granted Angel Eyes NI will take the fear out of learning braille as well as enabling parents to access books at very low cost. I have had to borrow books due to the price of brailed books and it is always sad when a much loved book has to be sent back. This will give children their own books to keep and cherish.”

Help us to provide more equipment to children like Elodie. Please click here to donate today.

Thank you.

Angel Eyes NI have now purchased their Mountbatten brailler and are currently undergoing training on how to use the machine, before introducing it into their support activities with the children.

On 29th June - 2nd July a team of 23 took on an epic 529km 4-day cycle from Geneva to Nice. The team have so far raised over £16,500 for the Foundation and World Bicycle Relief.

Geneva to Nice Cycle 2017 The intrepid cycle team, many from Hilton Worldwide, set off south from Geneva, Switzerland. For this 4-day challenge they climbed a total of 8,472km through the stunning French Alps - almost the height of Mount Everest! They then cycled along the beautiful Cote d’Azur, successully reaching their end destination of Nice on 2nd July. The team cycled in support of the Foundation and World Bicycle Relief, who will provide one bike in Africa for every £95 raised, greatly improving children’s access to education. In light of the recent tragedy in Manchester, we will be using the money raised to provide long-term support the young people affected in the city. You can support the team’s fundraising here.

About World Bicycle Relief WBR provides specially designed, locally assembled bikes to schoolchildren, students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs across Africa, South America and South East Asia. The bikes help people to overcome long distances and increase their carrying capacity, whilst the programmes create new economic opportunities by employing bike assemblers and training field mechanics.

Hilton Cardiff help their local community Team members from Hilton Cardiff enjoyed activity days volunteering with local community partners, whose projects the hotel has previously supported. A team painted out buildings and repaired damaged doors at Amelia Farm Trust, whilst another team organised and painted two therapy rooms at Barnardo’s Family Centre in Ely, Cardiff. Thanks to Hilton Cardiff’s dedicated fundraising, we helped fund an educational outdoor farm space at Amelia Farm Trust, whilst Barnardo’s received £1,550 in our Cardiff Giveaway 2015 for its community projects supporting young people.

Hilton Budapest’s community highlight of the year Hilton Budapest held its community highlight of the year on 12th July with the Ability Fashion Show celebrating inclusivity and accessibility. Hilton Budapest partnered with Ability Fashion Budapest to organise a fashion show in its Dominican Courtyard. 12 young people with different abilities took to the catwalk, whilst the audience of nearly 130 people enjoyed live entertainment from 6 young people, including a violin performance, singing and tango dancing.

Thank you to the young people who took part in the Ability Fashion Show, and to Hilton Budapest who organised the event and provided the refreshments and technical support.

We awarded Uplands Educational Trust (UET) a grant of £13,998.80 in 2016 to purchase and install an accessible kitchen at its centre in Swindon. UET provides high-quality education and learning opportunities to young people with special needs. We are delighted to share that the accessible kitchen has been designed and the specialised equipment is currently being made.

New kitchen for Skills for Life UET delivers a range of kitchen sessions, including Skills for Life Baking for young adults to continue learning life skills, and Preparation for Supported Internship. The new kitchen and food preparation area will increase access to these kitchen sessions and to the important transferable skills developed, such as team work, planning and preparation. Participants grow in confidence and develop awareness and knowledge of food hygiene, safety and preparation, preparing them for employment opportunities.

The new accessible kitchen will also allow wheelchair users full access to the food preparation areas, and will support autistic learners who find the small existing kitchen difficult and provide space for support staff. The story of K highlights the positive impact the kitchen and programmes have on the young people at UET.

K’s story K is a young man who attends the Skills for Life programme once a week, and as one of UET’s most able young people K is working towards increased independence within the kitchen. At first K did not have the confidence to follow recipes by himself and found organising the different steps and managing his time difficult. With support from staff K learnt the necessary processes and successfully developed his abilities within the kitchen. K can now bake a cake on his own, correctly following the recipe. Having grown in confidence, K is now taking part in a volunteer placement at a local café, where he assists with preparing dishes, including the morning pastries. With longer term ongoing support, UET fully anticipates that K will be able to access part-time paid employment.

A childhood dream to cycle London to Brighton We are looking forward to cheering our team of cyclists in the London to Brighton Charity Cycle on Saturday 17th September. The 54 mile route sets off from Clapham Common and heads south through the picturesque villages of Chipstead, Banstead and Haywards Heath in Surrey and Sussex to the finish line on the Brighton seafront. Our team are cycling in support of the Foundation and will receive training guidance, mechanical support and crews and water stations en route, plus a free fuel-focussed buffet lunch.

Susan Semak, a long-time supporter of the Foundation at Hilton Leicester, recently joined our cycle team, and has shared with us her motivations, training and thoughts ahead of the challenge. Why are you taking part in the London and Brighton Cycle? It is something I have always wanted to do since my childhood. The route passes through Woodmansterne, the village where I grew up, and every year I would watch in awe of those taking part. Much of my adult life I have been unfit and overweight,

What are you most looking forward to about the cycle? The pride in completing the course and being cheered on by family and friends in the village where I grew up. I’m not looking forward to the big hill Ditchling Beacon in the South Downs, just before Brighton. Even cars struggle to get up that hill!

and taking part seemed unlikely. However, in recent months, I have undertaken various challenges including a 5km run for Hilton Leicester’s charity partner, Wishes 4 Kids. In May I cycled 80 miles in two days for our AWD 2017 challenge. When I saw the London to Brighton Charity Cycle advert, I immediately knew this was my next challenge. How will you train for the cycle? With support from Hilton Leicester’s gym, I will use the running and cycle machines and swim lengths in the pool to increase my stamina and fitness. My diet will also be reviewed and analysed. As a diabetic, controlling my sugar levels is imperative so that I don’t experience a hypo when participating in a strenuous challenge.

You can follow my progress - the highs and lows - and contribute to my fundraising here. Thank you.

Why did you choose to cycle in support of DM Thomas Foundation for Young People? I’ve been involved with the Foundation from the beginning, and over the years I have arranged many different fundraising events. The money raised supports young people from all walks of life and gives them the opportunities to improve their confidence and selfworth, and for many to overcome disabilities which have previously excluded them from being involved. The chance to cycle this childhood route and raise money for the Foundation is a perfect combination.

Looking for a challenge and to make a difference? We can help you find your perfect challenge, secure your place and support your fundraising. Contact the events teams at [email protected]

AHOY’s Shipmates

Thanks to Hilton London Canary Wharf’s hard work fundraising for the Foundation, we are delighted to have supported AHOY’s Shipmates Programme. AHOY provides disadvantaged and disabled young people in London the opportunity to take part in water sports, encouraging teamwork and teaching transferable and employable skills.

AHOY’s Shipmate Programme teaches sailing and rowing to ‘Shipmates’ aged 8-18 to develop skills such as teamwork and leadership, and to enable them to gain national qualifications. Shipmates can then become volunteers at The AHOY Centre in Lewisham, where they train new recruits and maintain the site and boats. AHOY credits the programme’s success to the Shipmates’ commitment and participation after completing the programme as they provide consistency for it to continue.

Shipmates Ediva, Colm and Arthur share how the programme has transformed their lives:

Arthur: “It’s really helped my selfconfidence and being around and meeting new people. I wasn’t very sociable before I came here and kept myself to myself. AHOY is so different from learning at school as its more informal, you get more encouragement so it’s a fun way to learn.”

Colm: “My water sports qualifications open up a career path and job opportunities. Being at AHOY has given me more confidence and I can now speak to anyone and lead sessions. Plus I’ve made lots of friends. I’ve now achieved my RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification and so pleased that I’m now working as a full-time freelance Dinghy Instructor at The AHOY Centre! AHOY has taught me so much and given me a career.”

August 2017

dmthomasfoundation.org

Ediva: “I’m learning to row which is good fun and eventually I want to be a RYA Dinghy Instructor so I can use my skills and get paid for them! I like working with the younger Shipmates and its then I realise how much I’ve learnt.”

Afterschool sports club builds independence We spent a sunny afternoon with the Greenhouse Sports afterschool club at Highshore School, a special educational needs school in Camberwell, south London, where pupils aged 11-16 practised their tennis forearm and competed in a Wimbledon-inspired tournament. Les Mills Fund for Children (LMFC), which is funded through the fundraising efforts of the Les Mills UK team and is managed by the Foundation, awarded Greenhouse Sports £5,000 for its afterschool sports clubs in SEN schools. The grant will help fund teaching assistants, specialist trainers and students’ kit. Greenhouse Sports provide sports programmes in schools and local communities which develop important social, emotional and physical skills to equip young people for life. Their SEN school programme uses multipsports to help young people to recognise their strengths and to develop skills to achieve their best, on and off the sports field. Coach Jo Sykes, who leads the club and also teaches PE at the school, explained how they use sport to encourage both active lives and greater independence. Pupils work towards going to the gym independently, which Jo and her team support by helping pupils to complete gym membership forms. The club allows pupils to practise new sports, to develop teamwork and to improve their physical fitness.

Meet Lennon! In our new video we celebrate one of our many project partners, Chailey Heritage Foundation, which provides education, care and transition services for children and young people with complex physical disabilities and health needs. We meet Lennon, a pupil at Chailey Heritage School. Since 2000 we have supoprted more than 2,000 project partners, including Chailey Heritage Foundation, with grants totalling more than £17million, helping over 3,5 million children and young people, like Lennon. We are really grateful to Helen Viller and Alfredo Broccolo for donating their time and talents to make our new video.

“YMCA is about inspiring members of our community to help transform the lives of young people. Offering them accommodation, training opportunities, encouragement to get into education and employment and the chance to fulfil their potential.” Ian Pearson, Chairman of YMCA North Tyneside

New training kitchen for skills and jobs On 21st June YMCA North Tyneside in North Shields, UK hosted a grand opening of its new café and training kitchen. To support its training opportunities for local young people, we awarded YMCA North Tyneside £17,650 for new equipment and to help develop the café and kitchen. YMCA staff, residents, supporters and local community were joined by Mayor Norma Redfern and Young Mayor Oscar Daniel who cut the ribbon to officially open the café. Guests enjoyed delicious sandwiches, cakes and scones, created by YMCA learners in the new state-of-the-art training kitchen. The cafe enjoyed its first day trading the following day. YMCA North Tyneside has partnered up with the local council’s Employment and Skills Service to deliver a training scheme for young people to develop their culinary skills in a professional setting and to access to jobs in the catering and hospitality industries. 16 learners have already signed up to the programme, including 15 year old Connor who has received food preparation and barista skills training.

“This is a partnership scheme offering young people either work experience or a relevant qualification. They stay with us for 6-8 weeks and are then contracted to an employer where they are given additional training and a guaranteed job interview at the end.” Bridgett Thornton,

Connor explained, “My

goal is to get into the catering industry and when I feel confident enough I want to run my own restaurant so this training will give me the experience I need. I’m hoping to get an apprenticeship at YMCA before eventually being employed here as a chef.” August 2017
