Supporting young people to achieve their potential

Director’s Message Welcome to the July edition of Highlights! I am delighted to share that this month we awarded grants totalling £64,749 to 37 projects supporting young people. The Trustees agreed to grants of £11,330 for the Scottish Spina Bifida Association to fund information resources and toys for children diagnosed with Spina Bifida; £10,803 for Friends of Ysgol Maes Hyfryd in North Wales for a new sensory garden for children with disabilities and special educational needs, and £13,600 for CHIVA to enable young people with HIV/Aids to attend a residential arts project in partnership with Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. The Advisory Council for Les Mills Fund for Children, a donor-advised fund which we manage, also met and allocated a number of grants following successful fundraising by the team at Les Mills UK. North Tyneside Disability Forum will receive £960 for weekly boccia training, whilst Bradford PHAB will receive £960 for inclusive sports coaching. Cyclists Fighting Cancer were awarded £4,500 to purchase specialist trikes. These grants will directly help towards LMFC’s aim to inspire children to be active. Given our roots in the hospitality sector, we remain committed to supporting young people to learn important cooking and life skills and as such we have awarded several grants for new kitchens, many of which were completed this month. These kitchens will give young people the opportunity to gain valuable employability qualifications and experience, as offered on Young Enterprise Scotland’s Pathway Programme, whose new DM Thomas Foundation Kitchen our supporters at Hilton Glasgow visited this month. Unfortunately there have also been many tragic events this month. Some of you may know that the Foundation office is situated close to Grenfell Tower and since this tragedy happened we have been working with the team at Hilton London Kensington to support the community’s response. Everyone has come together to coordinate and distribute the collection of food and clothing to help those affected. We will also be helping the young people of Manchester by supporting Once Upon a Smile at the Star Ball at Hilton Manchester Deansgate in September, along with the Yianis Christodoulou Foundation. Once Upon a Smile is a Manchester-based charity which provides financial support, respite breaks and children’s bereavement support groups. All our grants are made possible thanks to the hard work of our dedicated supporters whose continued fundraising efforts help us to transform young lives. This month our supporters have held balls, challenge events, a jive night and even a head shave. Hilton Brighton Metropole’s Midummer Ball raised an incredible £100,000 for the Foundation and four Sussex-based charities, helping us to transform young lives. Thank you to everyone who supported the Ball. We also celebrated 10 years of Around the World in a Day this month with 35 hotels taking part. Thanks to everyone’s hard work and support for AWD over the past decade, we have raised £792,187 and supported nearly 800 projects across Europe. Do see our Facebook page for the many fun photos of all the events. I do hope you enjoy this issue of Highlights which shows the impact of our work on young people and celebrates the amazing efforts of our dedicated supporters. Together we are transforming young lives.

Warm regards, Simon Sheehan, Director

New kitchen to provide important cooking lessons As part of our commitment to ensure all young people can achieve their full potential, we were delighted to award a grant of £24,741 to The William Henry Smith School, a residential special school based in West Yorkshire, to fund a new kitchen for cooking lessons. Pupils currently learn about the journey from farm to fork. The school grows a variety of vegetables, keeps hens for eggs and hand-reared pigs for free range pork. The new classroom will allow students to move on to the next stage and participate in regular cooking lessons. Pupils will have the opportunity to develop vocational qualifications and life skills as well as an understanding of healthy living and nutrition. Gary Morrison, General Manager and Janet McAteer, PA at the Hilton Leeds City visited the school to present the grant cheque to Caroline Booth, Vice Principal. Gary Morrison said: “It

is great that the Foundation can support this worthwhile project which will not only teach the importance of healthy eating and lifestyles but also open up to students work opportunities in the catering industry .” Caroline Booth, Vice Principal, said: “A

fit for purpose home economics classroom is something that students asked us to invest in via our student council . Since then we have aspired to provide this . We are therefore thrilled to find out that we have been awarded a grant to enable us to redevelop an underused space in the school to make it happen .”

Hilton Northampton help teach water safety

The team at Hilton Northampton joined up with Northamptonshire Sport to educate local young people about the dangers of open water and to teach vital water safety during this year’s Drowning Prevention Week (16-26th June 2017). Team members from Hilton Northampton, along with local charity Northamptonshire Sport, visited various local primary schools, teaching pupils about drowning prevention and water safety, and also held practical sessions in the water at Nene White Water Centre. As well as a Foundation grant, Hilton Northampton also donated resources for information packs about drowning prevention which they helped distribute to local school children. Hilton Northampton and Northamptonshire Sport worked together with 4,500 pupils and indirectly helped as many as 25,000 through the distributed drowning prevention packs. Steve Jackson, Schools Swimming Manager at Northamptonshire Sport, said: “The

resources Hilton Northampton donated have been a great way for pupils to start conversations when back home further stretching the reach of the work we have done . Hopefully we can continue to work together to help keep our community safe .” Well done to the team at Hilton Northampton for your hard work teaching water safety in your local community and donating these important resources for the information packs.

Young people start their Galvin’s Chance journey

11 young people have embarked on Galvin’s Chance, our into-work programme for 18-24 year olds. On 7th June we held our Galvin’s Chance Recruitment Day in partnership with The Springboard Charity at London Hilton on Park Lane to select the next cohort of candidates. 24 young people attended the Recruitment Day, many of whom face various barriers to employment and are not in education, training or employment. We were delighted to be joined by employers from a range of top hotel and hospitality companies, including Hilton Hotels, Intercontinental Hotel Group, Premier Inn, Park Plaza, Baxter Storey and Ricker Restaurants, who interviewed the young people. Jiah Discolo, a graduate from last year’s programme and since employed at Premier Inn, also joined the young people, talking to them about his experiences on the programme and answering their questions. Co-founders Chris Galvin and Fred Sirieix later spoke to the young people and presented Jiah with his Galvin’s Chance pin to celebrate successfully completing the programme. Fred and Chris explained their personal motivations behind starting the programme. Fred highlighted his desire to give to others what he was fortunate to have had in his childhood. Fred also explained how the difficulties to recruit and fill roles in the hospitality industry opened up many opportunities for Galvin’s Chance candidates. Sandia Scott, Human Resources & Training Officer at Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel, echoed this, citing the skills shortage in the industry and difficulties recruiting new staff as one reason for getting involved in Galvin’s Chance. Eleanor Green from Park Plaza Riverbank London, which offered employment to two candidates in the previous programme, highlighted the positive benefit for all involved, describing the programme as “worthwhile on both sides”. We were delighted to select 11 young people to take part in Galvin’s Chance, whilst five others were identified by the employers for immediate job interviews or placements. Tobi and Jodie, two of the candidates selected, shared that they were looking forward to meeting new people and trying different roles. The 11 Galvin’s Chance candidates started the programme on Monday 12th June with three weeks of training. They will then begin their two week work placements on Monday 3rd July at London hotels and restaurants, including Park Plaza Riverbank, Georgian House, Galvin at Windows and Hyatt Regency. We are delighted that Galvin’s Chance has been recognised as a Finalist in the Youth Employment Award category of the ERSA Employability Awards, announced on 29th June.

A Night at the Musicals to transform young lives Hilton Brighton Metropole held its annual Midsummer Ball ‘A Night at the Musicals’ on Saturday 24th June in support of the Foundation and four Sussex-based charities - Action Medical Research, Chailey Heritage Foundation, Chestnut Tree House and The Starr Trust - all with the shared aim of helping young people in the county. Guests enjoyed an exciting singing and dancing competition that raised money for these local charities. Anthony Nelson performed Singin’ in the Rain for Action Medical Research, Keris Lea sang a hit from Dreamgirls for Chailey Heritage Foundation, Matt Turner and Marcella Whittingdale took on classic numbers from Grease for Chestnut Tree House, whilst Robin Cousins and Rob Starr paired up for a Hairspray performance for The Starr Trust. After weeks of rehearsing and fundraising, the performers took to the floor for the judges’ scores and audience vote. Employability skills gained in Foundation kitchen In 2016 we were delighted to award a grant of £6,735 to Young Enterprise Scotland to refurbish the kitchen area at their Glasgow training centre. The DM Thomas Foundation Kitchen has since opened and is used to prepare meals for young people attending Pathway Programmes, which provide employability and skill-building training to young people who are disengaged from traditional learning and employment. The kitchen ensures that attendees have the energy and nutrition to work, the space to share a meal and the chance to socialise with their peers. We were invited to attend an afternoon tea at the DM Thomas Foundation Kitchen on 30th May, which Alisha Khan from Hilton Glasgow attended. Pupils from Mary Russell School, a school for children with additional needs, baked and served delicious sausage rolls, scones and cakes. The pupils also received their Level 3 Employability SQA Qualification, which they achieved through the Pathway Programme. Alisha said: “It

was great to see the fantastic refurbished kitchen of one of the Foundation’s beneficiaries . The project supports employability skill-building and learning for disadvantaged young people . A big thank you to the students of Mary Russell School for serving us up a delicious afternoon tea and congratulations to the pupils who received their Level 3 Employability Qualification ! ”

Students showcase baking skills to food critic Last year the Foundation awarded a grant of £30,000 to The Orpheus Centre for creating a new Life Skills Kitchen to be used as part of their study programme. The Orpheus Centre is a specialist day college in Surrey that provides personalised study programmes for young people, preparing them for adulthood and developing their independence skills. We are delighted to share that the new kitchen is now complete and was opened on 20th June by well-known food critic and journalist, Jay Rayner. Students at the centre gave musical performances and took part in the Orpheus Bake Off. Using their valuable cooking skills, the students baked a range of delicious cakes and treats, which were judged by Jay Rayner. Jay explained: “Every

young person should learn to cook, and that includes the young people at Orpheus as they progress towards independent lives .”

A childhood dream to swim the English Channel Jean-Michel Dixte, Senior Director EMEA for Brand F&B Development at Hilton, will be fulfilling his childhood dream to swim the English Channel on 15th August. Jean-Michel has spent the past three years training for the 25 miles open sea swim and having completed several charity challenges before, he is hoping to raise £5,000 for the Foundation. We spoke to Jean-Michel to find out more about the challenge, how his training is going and why he is supporting the Foundation. What will your challenge involve? I will be swimming the English Channel solo in August. The shortest route is 21 miles but you end up doing about 25 miles because of the tides and various weather conditions. It is the busiest shipping channel in the world with 600 tankers and 200 ferries and other sea vessels crossing the Channel each day. As they have the right of way, swimmers have to swim around them. Open water swimming is all about the conditions. Weather, tides, currents, and temperature are going to happen how they will. I can’t control the conditions. It will be cold! And you are not allowed to wear a wetsuit. The average temperature during the Channel swim season is 14-16 degrees Celsius. The risk of hypothermia is real, so cold acclimation and preparation is key. A little extra body fat is also a big help…that’s where the ice baths and ice cream will come into play. What inspired you to take on this challenge? Brexit! Just kidding. It has been a dream of mine since I was a child. I am a strong swimmer, love endurance challenges and have always wanted to achieve something extraordinary in my life – this would certainly qualify. Being a role model to my children is also very important to me. Understanding that with the right training and mindset everything is possible in life. This is also an opportunity to help a good cause. I am also half British and half French. Connecting both sides through a physical and mental challenge is a way to make peace with my roots.

Why did you choose to swim in support of DM Thomas Foundation for Young People? As a father, my priority in life is to provide the best to my children so they can have a future, build their own lives with confidence and strong moral values. This is why I believe in DM Thomas Foundation for Young People. The Foundation helps disabled, sick and disadvantaged children to transform their lives. It is a marvellous cause that helps not just children but families and communities as well. It is about making our everyday world a better place where disadvantaged young people can add a bit of happiness into their lives and believe that they too can have a brighter future.

What has training for the challenge involved? The most important thing for this challenge is preparedness. Being physically prepared, but also just as important, being mentally prepared! Hence I have been planning and training for the past three years. I did an ironman in 12 hours and 9 minutes two years ago in Indonesia and that was the ultimate endurance test for me. I swim almost daily and have completed a number of long-distance swims already. I have done a 25km long swim in 7 hours and 39 minutes and also completed the Centurion swim in San Francisco which consists of swimming from Alcatraz to shore, an amazing experience I would highly recommend. My typical training week at the moment consists of six days swimming, totalling 10 to 14 hours and about 35-40km. I have one rest day a week. I mainly swim in my local pool but I have started swimming in lakes at the weekend to get acclimatised to cold water. Soon I will start going to Dover to do long sea swims as well. In order to qualify to do the Channel, I will need to swim for 6 hours straight in water with a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius. Do you have any funny stories about your training? Mmm, I am not sure if there is anything funny about swimming for hours on end in a 25m pool. Sometimes I feel like Dory from Finding Nemo, brainless with only one motto on my mind: Just keep swimming.

“Many describe swimming the English Channel as the Everest of swimming; in fact more people have successfully climbed Everest than have swum the Channel.”

During my first cold water swim in a lake at Hellidon, Northamptonshire, I was attacked by a swan. It probably had baby swans to protect and hated my presence in the water. For 20 minutes I tried to swim away from it, playing cat and mouse around an island in the middle of the lake. On my second cold swim, I managed to last an hour in the cold water. At the end of my session, I was so cold I could hardly stand up and was acting like a drunk man – it was impossible to speak and I was shivering like crazy for a good half hour. What has training for the challenge involved? The Channel swim will be a rite of passage, an actual journey into the depth of myself. I will be facing my demons and I am looking forward to accepting them, through a unique emotional experience that will enhance my perspective on life. But I am definitely not looking forward to the cold water…

Jean-Michel is swimming in support of the Foundation.

Jean-Michel shares the latest on his training and his thoughts about the challenge on his blog ‘A Channel Swim Story’ - click here to read the blog.

Good luck Jean-Michel!

Thank you.

Building confidence and life skills through sailing Here at the Foundation we are committed to supporting young people to achieve their full potential and in 2016 we awarded Tall Ships Youth Trust £12,000 for their voyage programme. Tall Ships is dedicated to the personal development of young people aged 1225, through the crewing of ocean-going sail training vessels. The Foundation grant enabled 20 young people not in employment, education or training, and 20 young people with special needs to take part in the voyage programme. Different from anything they had experienced before, their voyage challenged them both physically and mentally, enabling them to develop confidence, life skills and aspirations. For many it was a turning point in their young lives with most believing their voyage had increased their chances in life. Several of the young people shared how the programme has transformed their lives. J, 24 years old:

“Throughout school I was unfit and hated PE . After my voyage I’m more conscious of my strengths and weaknesses and general fitness . I’ve discovered that exercise isn’t boring and I actually enjoy keeping myself fit.”

S, 19 years old:

“I was a regular self-harmer and I didn’t have any real friends . I didn’t believe what they told me about the voyages - but it was brilliant. I’ve already been back again as a volunteer deckhand and I haven’t self-harmed since .”

J, 24 years old:

“As well as learning a lot about myself, I learnt a lot about the ship and what you do . I didn’t know what to expect when I went on the voyage and though it would be too hard for me to cope . I tried my very best though and with help from the crew I achieved a lot. I am more confident now - this has changed my life for the better.”
