Humboldt County School District: website www.hcsdnv.com Humboldt County School District announces that the first day of school for the 2016-17 school year will be August 29, 2016. The first day of school will be a full day. New students are encouraged to register as soon as possible before school starts. Children entering kindergarten must have reached their 5th birthday on or before September 30th in order to attend kindergarten. First grade students must have reached their 6th birthday on or before September 30th in order to attend 1st grade. First grade students who have not attended kindergarten must bring proof of birth and immunization records at the time of registration. Welcome back students! Humboldt County School District has contracted with Chartwells K12 to provide our meal service. The District will be providing breakfast at all schools this year at a price of $2.00. Breakfast serving times will vary according to each school. Student lunch for grades K-6 is $3.50 per day, grades 7-8 is $4.00 per day, and grades 9-12 is $4.00 per day. Milk is included in the price of hot lunch. Lunches are payable in advance, preferably by one week or two week periods. There will be no charges except in emergencies. Arrangements must be made through the school office before a lunch can be charged. Those eating cold lunch may purchase milk for 50¢ per day. School lunch applications will be available on the first day of school. Humboldt County School Distict and Chartwells look forward to making your child’s school dining experience a happy and healthy one. Bus transportation in Humboldt County may be provided for each child of school age who resides in rural areas that have been consolidated for attendance with urban areas or with rural schools in the vicinity. Bus service or mileage may be provided to high school students who live outside the city limits or a two (2) mile radius of the school. Bus service or mileage may be provided to elementary, middle school and junior high students who live outside a one and one-quarter (1 ¼) mile radius from their school of attendance. Special requests for transpiration must be submitted to the Transportation department in writing. The Board of Trustees may discontinue or alter any bus routes when deemned necessary. When possible, at least two weeks notice shall be given prior to any such discontinutation or alteration. Grass Valley Elementary: (775-623-8150) -Please know that school begins at 8:20 AM (doors open at 8:00 AM) and ends at 3:00 PM. Late Starts on Thursdays where 1 st bell rings at 8:50 AM and Tardy bell at 8:55 AM. It is very important that students come to school prepared and on time. If your child is absent or tardy please follow the Humboldt County School District policy when excusing per note or phone call. Attendance is very important.

-Also, All adults must check in at the office upon entering Grass Valley Elementary School. With the amount of room in the multi-purpose room it makes it very difficult for parents to come and eat lunch with your child. Therefore, we ask that you check with the office before proceeding. PICK UP AND DROP OFF 2016-17 School Years Again, for safety purposes of all stakeholders of Grass Valley Elementary School we will be going to zoned areas for pick up and drop off of students. If you have more than one child that attends Grass Valley Elementary School, please pick up and drop off in the younger child’s zone. We do have special arrangements for some students to be dropped off in the very front of the building. This must be approved through the Principal. Please come to a complete stop and park while dropping off your children. Upon leaving, please make sure you are looking everywhere before leaving. Sonoma Heights Elementary: (775-623-8165) All students will start school on Monday, August 29th – 8:20 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Kindergarten is a full-day program that runs from 8:20 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Playground supervision begins at 8:00 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and at 8:30 a.m. on Thursdays. There will be a Kindergarten Open House on Friday, August 26th – 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be all-school Open House/Title I Meeting on Thursday, September 8th from 6:00 -7:00 p.m. In order to assure the safety of all students, the following change has been made at Sonoma Heights Elementary School when dropping off and picking up your child/ren: Access to the parking lot in front of the school is limited to parents with special needs permits. Parents with after school concerns in the office or with a teacher must wait until the 3:00 p.m. bell rings to enter the office area. All parents must check in at the office prior to entering the remainder of the building. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the school at 623-8165. Winnemucca Grammar School: (775-623-8165) All students will start school on Monday, August 29, 2016. First Bell rings at 8:20 a.m. and the tardy bell rings at 8:30 a.m. Kindergarten is a full day program that runs from 8:25 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Breakfast will be served from 7:45-8:15 a.m. The Pre-Kindergarten program is now in half-day sessions. Session 1: 8:45-11.15 a.m. Sesison 2: 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. In order to assure the safety of all students, the following changes have been made at Grammar School when dropping off and picking up your child/ren.

Please have your child cross at one of the five crosswalks located on the corner of Fifth Street and Lay Street, Sixth Street and Lay Street, Fifth Street and Aiken, or Sixth Street and Aiken. We have reintroduced the crosswalk at the back entrance of the school. The zone along Aiken will remain a parallel drop off and pick up zone only! This means that parking will not be allowed in this zone. The crosswalk that used to be in the middle of Aiken by Nixon will return to be a crosswalk. Please make sure to cross your children at one of the five previously mentioned crosswalks. At the close of each day, students will be released to you at one of the following locations: in front of the building on Lay Street or at the back gate on Aiken Street. Please let your child and your child's teacher know which location you will be picking up your children. French Ford Middle School (775-623-8200) Bell Schedule: First Bell: 8:10 AM / Students to class Tardy Bell: 8:15 AM School Dismissed: 3:00 PM Thursday Late Start Each Week / Day begins 8:35 AM / Tardy 8:40 AM Crossing Guard on duty at Highland Dr.: 7:30-8:10 AM and 3:00 to 3:15 PM Crossing Guard on duty at Palisade Dr.: 7:45-8:10 AM and 3:00 to 3:15 PM All new students should register at the school as soon as possible so scheduling can be completed. Parents knowing of children moving or otherwise not being enrolled for the 2016-17 school year, please notify the school at 623-8200 as soon as possible. Student breakfast & lunch will be served this year. Breakfast is $2 per child or .30 cents reduced, and Lunch is $3.50 per child or .40 cents reduced. Breakfast will be served from 7:45 to 8:05 daily except for Thursday when the time is 8:15 to 8:35 Winnemucca Junior High School: (775-623-8120) Winnemucca Junior High School will be hosting orientation for students and parents this month. The dates and times are as follow: August 17th, 8th grade students and their parents, 9:00 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. August 18th, 7th grade students and their parents, 9:00 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. Please choose the time which is most convenient for you and your child to attend. At orientation, we will cover basic school rules, policies and expectations, as well as hand out student schedules and available supply lists for classes. Some staff and administration will be on hand to answer questions and help students and parents locate their classrooms. We are asking all students at WJHS to have a planner for their school year. Students taking P.E. or weights classes must have a grey t-shirt and red shorts, as well as a dedicated pair of tennis/athletic shoes for their classes. P.E. uniforms and student planners will be available for purchase at orientation for your convenience. However, it is not mandatory that these items be purchased from the school. School will begin on August 29th. Classes begin at 8:00, with a dismissal time of 2:38, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Thursdays are late start day, and classes will begin at 8:35, with a dismissal time of 2:38. Drop off and pick-up for students is provided in the designated dropoff area in front of the school. PLEASE DO NOT USE THE DIRT PARKING LOT FOR DROPOFF OR PICKUP. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE BUS ZONE WITH ANY VEHICLES. Parents and all visitors must enter the school through the single entry way. All visitors must get a visitor/s pass prior to entering the main building. McDermitt Combined School: (775-532-8761) McDermitt Elementary, Grades K-5, Start 8:00 a.m. End 2:42 p.m. (M, T, W F) McDermitt High School, Grades 6-12, Start 8:05 a.m. End 2:42 p.m. (M, T, W F) Thursday late start: 8:50 – 2:42 p.m. Children should not arrive at school until 7:45 a.m. as the play ground is not supervised until that time. Breakfast will be served at 7:45 a.m. Insurance forms, applications for hot lunch, etc. will be distributed to the classrooms.
