BG Board, Briefly Swimming, gymnastics cooperative arrangements with Camas are OK’d Girls’ gymnastics is back! The School Board Monday, Oct. 10, approved a cooperative program agreement under which Battle Ground female gymnasts will train with the Camas High School gymnastics team but compete as Prairie or Battle Ground high school and wear their respective school uniform. Girls’ gymnastics was last an interscholastic sport here in 2008-2009. The Board also approved continuation of a similar cooperative arrangement with Camas that has been in place for several years for girls and boys swimming programs. In both sports, Battle Ground district athletes will practice in Camas with Camas High School participants and CHS coaches. However, at meets they will represent Prairie High or Battle Ground High. The new gymnastics arrangement helps the school district meet federal Title IX (gender equity) goals and both sports meet expressed interest of the students. The arrangements, sanctioned by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, were part of the consent agenda, which the Board approved 5-0 with all members – Steve Pagel, John Idsinga, Monty Anderson, Ken Root and Mavis Nickels -- present. The meeting was at the former Lewisville Middle School, just northwest of Battle Ground High School.
The Board also approved a request by MaryBeth Lynn, assistant superintendent for finance and school operations, to declare a portable building as “surplus” and offer it for sale. It is near BGHS and had been used to house the Learning Support Program. That staff has moved to the CASEE C building in Brush Prairie, near the district office. The Board also approved a contract with Camfil Farr Inc. for HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) equipment and service. The two-year contract is not to exceed $95,000 but expected to cost closer to $86,000. In a work session prior to the regular meeting, the Board heard a report on last school year’s state test scores from Bruce Kelley, director of assessment and research. Results for all Washington school districts are accessible at http://www.k12.wa.us/ by clicking on the “State Report Card” tab on the right. Kelley invited the Board members to study the report and bring questions or comments to the next Board meeting at 3 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, at Lewisville.
