The Board is committed to a safe learning environment and treatment of all students with dignity and respect. Students are to be free from the unreasonable use of force. Isolation and restraint of students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), an Aversive Intervention Plan (AIP), or a plan developed under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504 plan) will generally be avoided and will not be used as a form of discipline or punishment. The district recognizes, however, that isolation and restraint are necessary at times to preserve the safety of students and school staff. The Board therefore authorizes isolation and/or restraint under limited circumstances, and requires incident review procedures, reporting, and parent/guardian notification for such action. The district must provide parents/guardians of students with an IEP, AIP or Section 504 plan with a copy of this policy when the plan is created, and must include parent/guardian notifications in the student’s plan.
