Rationale The development of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Learning has continuously challenged and motivated researchers and practitioners to learn, think and discuss how to study and teach the language in innovative and advanced ways. Within multilingual societies, the strengthening role of English as an international language has led changes on the English curriculum and teaching approaches. These changes are also informed by research ndings in the English language teaching as well as language and literature. There is a tendency that interconnectedness between English language studies and language teaching has always been exchangeable in modern and multilingual society. Developing advanced studies is highly needed in multilingual societies. Thus, the need of sharing ideas, informed-based practices, and research ndings and the like is crucial. Findings of research in linguistics, literature, and the teaching of English as a foreign language will not only be useful in each corresponding eld, but also across the elds of studies. In accordance with this, the English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang, Indonesia holds the fourth International Seminar on English Language and Teaching (ISELT) with the purpose of bringing up to the forum an issue of advancing EFL learning in multilingual societies.
