BUSINESS INCUBATION MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AN OVERVIEW Business incubators are responsible for fostering early stage start-ups in general – mainly through processes and programs to support growth-oriented entrepreneurs who do not necessarily undergo formal business education. Requisite expertise and skills are pivotal to successful operations of an incubation program and requires a mindset shift from running already established businesses to starting new ventures. The incubates are young minds filled with passion and technology know but lack skills on business planning, fund raising, go to market ability, compliance and regulatory norms and business sustainability. Successful incubation teams’ work on creating sustainable incubation programs within their institutes as well as mentor incubates on day to day basis. In terms of the overall Indian incubation ecosystem, 7 key stakeholders have been identified: start-ups, incubators, corporate, investors, mentors, government and research institutions – each plays an important role in the innovation ecosystem and has a symbiotic relationship with every other stakeholder in the environment. Organizations which sustain market turbulences innovate – often more than just profit/ ROI, they achieve cost competitiveness and bring value to stakeholders.
Broadly incubators are categorized into two models based on motive for incubation i.e., for-profit and not-for-profit.
The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs invites innovation officers, practitioners, R & D experts, academicians et al. to participate in the 3 days workshop on Incubation Models to provide support to start-up entities to grow at an accelerated pace, typically from ‘infancy to steady state’ where support can be in the form of physical facilities, mentoring, market access, funding and administrative services with the overall objective of increasing incubatees’ chance of survival and commercial success. Motive/ Benefits of Incubation a) Developing innovative technology and identify trends b) Improving competitive advantage c) Infusing an ‘intrapreneurial culture’ within the company d) Exploiting under-utilized IP within the organization and spin-off for profit e) Increasing market adoption for existing platforms
